Overview

Reins of the Blonde Riding Yak

Game iconReins of the Blonde Riding Yak is a ground mount from the Mists of Pandaria expansion that still remains one of the simplest and most atmospheric companions for collectors today. The huge, fluffy yak plods slowly across the snowy slopes of Pandaria, and that is precisely its charm: it does not fly, does not glow, and does not trumpet, yet it looks truly alive.

The mount is sold for ordinary gold by a vendor on Kun-Lai Summit, requires no reputation, and is not tied to any drop chance. For a level 90 character in 2026, this is literally a one-evening purchase.

Why you want this mount

  • Collection value. The yak counts toward your overall mount tally and brings you closer to the Lord of the Reins achievement and the larger rewards for 400+ mounts.
  • Pandaria theme. If you are assembling a set of "Pandaren" steeds, the yak looks great alongside tigers, cranes, and cloud serpents.
  • Affordability. 3,000 gold by 2026 standards is an amount any level 80 character can gather in an hour or two on world quests.

Requirements and how to get there

  • Character level: at least 10 (for the riding skill). In practice, you will grab the yak at level 80 while clearing world quests along the way.
  • Riding skill: "Expert Riding." In the modern game, the skill unlocks automatically as you level up.
  • Reputation: not required. The vendor works with everyone regardless of faction or reputation.
  • Gold: 3,000 without a guild discount; with the "Cash Flow" guild perk of up to 10%, around 2,700.
  • How to reach Kun-Lai Summit:
    • Open the map of Pandaria and choose the portal from Stormwind or Orgrimmar.
    • From the Temple of the White Tiger or the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, fly to the "Grummle Bazaar" flight point in the northwestern part of Kun-Lai Summit.
    • If the flight point is not yet unlocked, head northwest from the Temple of the White Tiger along the mountain ridge.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Prepare your gold. Make sure your character's wallet holds at least 3,000 gold. If you plan to buy the Game iconReins of the Grand Expedition Yak at the same time, set aside an additional 120,000 gold.
  2. Unlock the riding skill. At level 80 you already have it. If you are playing a lower-level character, visit a riding trainer in any capital city.
  3. Travel to Pandaria. Through the portal room in Stormwind or Orgrimmar, choose the portal to the "Temple of the Two Moons" (for the Horde) or the "Temple of the White Tiger" (for the Alliance).
  4. Fly to the Grummle Bazaar. On Kun-Lai Summit this is the northwestern flight point, near the mountain ridge and the road to the Kun-Lai pass.
  5. Find the vendor. Uncle Bigpocket stands in the center of the bazaar, next to the yak pens. He is easy to recognize by his distinctive Pandaren clothing and the flock of animals around him.
  6. Buy the mount. In the trade window, select the entry "Reins of the Blonde Riding Yak" and confirm the purchase for 3,000 gold.
  7. Use the reins. Right-click the item in your bag, and the mount will automatically be added to your collection and become available in the "Mounts" tab.

Farming optimization

  • Quick gold at level 80. Seasonal world quests in Hallowfall and Azj-Kahet hand out 400–900 gold per cycle; in a single evening you accumulate enough for the yak.
  • Professions. Skinning, herbalism, and mining in the zones yield a steady 2,000–4,000 gold per hour from selling reagents on the auction house.
  • Reputation discount. With most Pandaria vendors, reputation discounts do not apply, but the "Cash Flow" guild rank perk lowers the price to 2,700 gold, so check with your guild master before buying.
  • Joint visit. If your character already has 123,000 gold, grab both the Blonde and the Grand Expedition Yak in one trip to save time on flights.
  • Transferring gold. If your main capital is on another character of the same account, send the gold via the guild bank or mail; transfers within an account are instant.

Tips

1

The Blonde Riding Yak is a purely ground mount; you cannot fly on it even in zones with dynamic flight. For long-distance travel, use a regular flying steed.

2

Running speed depends on your riding skill: at maximum skill, the mount grants +100% to ground movement speed.

3

The vendor operates as an ordinary NPC: if you cannot see him, check whether you have accidentally switched to the War Mode variant of the location.

4

Do not confuse the Blonde Riding Yak with the gray one: these are two different mounts from the same vendor. For the full set, grab both.

5

After purchase, the mount is bound to your account, so it will automatically appear on all your characters, including future ones.
