Overview

Grey Riding Yak

Grey Riding Yak is a ground mount from the Mists of Pandaria expansion that summons a graceful grey yak with distinctive Pandaren tack. Unlike its enormous cousin, this model is slimmer and more agile, and best of all, it is available to any player without ties to reputation or long quest chains. All you need is to fly to the right spot in Pandaria and pay 3,000 gold. In the current season, the price and conditions remain unchanged.

Why You Want This Mount

  • Easy collection boost. One of the simplest ways to add a point toward the achievement. No raids, no reputation, no luck involved — just gold.
  • Unique model. A grey yak with Pandaren gear is a rare ground model that looks visually different from elven cats and orcish wolves.
  • Shared by both factions. The vendor is neutral, so the mount is equally available to the Alliance and the Horde.
  • Account-wide. Once learned, it appears on all of your characters, including new ones.
  • Cheap start for a collector. At level 90 you can earn 3,000 gold in an hour or two doing world quests.

Requirements and How to Get There

The character requirements are minimal:

  • Character level: 32 and up (after the changes in patch 9.0.2). At level 90 there are no restrictions.
  • Riding skill: Apprentice Riding (+60% ground speed). Most current characters already have it.
  • Reputation: not required.
  • Professions and achievements: not required.
  • Gold: 3,000 (or 2,700 with the 10% guild discount).

How to reach the point of sale in 2026:

  1. Open the continent map and select Pandaria. If you have been there before, you most likely have a route open via the portal from Stormwind or Orgrimmar.
  2. If you have no portals, fly to the Valley of the Four Winds and pass through the Veiled Stair in the northeast, which leads up to Kun-Lai Summit.
  3. At Kun-Lai Summit, use the flight point Binan Village or Grummle Bazaar if they are already unlocked.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Save up 3,000 gold. At level 90 this is easy: one or two sessions of world quests in the seasonal zone easily cover the amount. If you are in a guild with the discount perk, bring 2,700 with you.
  2. Get to Pandaria. From Stormwind and from Orgrimmar, take the portal in the portal room. Both portals lead to the Jade Forest.
  3. Unlock a flight point at Kun-Lai Summit. If you do not have one yet, fly to the Valley of the Four Winds, then climb the Veiled Stair on foot or by mount. At the entrance to Kun-Lai, find the nearest flight master.
  4. Fly to Grummle Bazaar. From the Binan Village flight point it is about 30 seconds of flight east to the bazaar.
  5. Find Uncle Bigpocket. He stands in a pen behind the yak herder Musk Brewer, right among the grazing yaks. Coordinates 65.4, 61.6.
  6. Buy the reins. Open the trade window and purchase Reins of the Grey Riding Yak for 3,000 gold.
  7. Learn the mount. Right-click the item in your bag — it will automatically be added to your mount collection and become available to all characters on the account.
  8. Check your collection. Open the “Mounts” tab (hotkey Shift+P) and summon your new yak to make sure everything applied.

Farming Optimization

  • Grab both colors at once. Next to the grey yak, for the same price, stands Reins of the Blonde Riding Yak. If you are planning a full collection, take both models in one trip.
  • Use the guild discount. The guild perk “Mr. Popularity” lowers the cost to 2,700 gold — 300 saved with no effort.
  • Do not rush to confirm. The item can be returned within two hours of purchase if you change your mind.
  • Set a hearthstone. If you are also collecting Reins of the Grand Expedition Yak, set your hearthstone at the Halfhill (Tiller's Vineyard) area — it is 1 flight from there to Grummle Bazaar.
  • Combine with Pandaria achievements. While flying to Kun-Lai Summit, also unlock the remaining flight points — they will come in handy for the Explore Pandaria achievement.

Tips

1

The mount is ground-based. Do not count on flying — in no-fly zones it will be handy, but in open areas it is faster to take a flying mount.

2

Do not confuse it with the grand yak. ability_mount_travellersyakmountReins of the Grand Expedition Yak costs 120,000 gold and provides a mobile merchant and armor repair vendor. The grey yak is just a riding animal.

3

Shared reins for the whole collection. If you have several characters without the mount, buy it only once: after learning, any new character will get the yak automatically.

4

Bring a friend. Uncle Bigpocket is neutral, so you can calmly fly there with an ally from the opposite faction without fearing the guards.

5

Save up gold in advance. If you are planning a big run through old mounts (yak reins, ability_mount_travellersyakmountReins of the Grand Expedition Yak, the camels of Uldum), set aside about 200,000 gold for everything at once.
