Nazjatar Blood Serpent — How to Get the Mount
Nazjatar Blood Serpent

Nazjatar Blood Serpent is a secret epic flying mount from the Battle for Azeroth expansion. Visually, it is a red recolor of the
Riddler's Mind-Worm from Legion — a shadow serpent infused with the dark energy of N'Zoth.
The collection description reads: "Monstrous serpents steeped in corruption serve as mounts for N'Zoth's high-ranking servants in the Great Sea."
The mount was added in Patch 8.0.1 and belongs to the category of secret mounts that require completing several non-obvious steps. Statistically, no more than 4–5% of active players own this mount, making it rare and prestigious.
Why You Want This Mount
- One of the rarest mounts from the Battle for Azeroth expansion — very few players own it
- Unique red shadow serpent model with N'Zoth corruption effects
- A full flying mount that adapts to your riding skill
- Guaranteed drop (100%) upon completing all requirements — no reliance on luck
- Account-bound — available to all your characters
- Obtaining this mount counts toward secret community achievements
How to Get the Nazjatar Blood Serpent
Obtaining the mount consists of three main steps: collecting
Abyssal Fragments, creating
Abhorrent Essence of the Abyss at an altar, and summoning the boss in Saltstone Mine.
Step 1 — Collect 20 Abyssal Fragments
Abyssal Fragments are items that drop from mobs associated with N'Zoth and the Old Gods in Kul Tiras and Zandalar. You need to collect 20 of them.
Where they drop:
- Any mobs associated with the Void cult and N'Zoth in Kul Tiras and Zandalar
- The most convenient farming spot is Stormsong Valley, which has a large concentration of suitable enemies
- Atal'gral in Zuldazar is also a good location, with many naga
Drop chance: approximately 2–4%, making the farm quite lengthy.
Important: Abyssal Fragments are tradeable and sellable items. If you don't want to spend time farming, check the Auction House — fragments are often available at a reasonable price.
Step 2 — Altar of the Abyss in Stormsong Valley
Once you have 20 Abyssal Fragments, head to the Altar of the Abyss in Stormsong Valley.
How to find the altar:
- Go to coordinates 73.6, 23.3 in Stormsong Valley — this is the eastern coast, an area called Tempest's Edge
- You will see a small waterfall
- Walk into the waterfall — behind it is a hidden cave called the Sepulcher of the Abyss
- Proceed to the far end of the cave; the Altar of the Abyss is at coordinates 74.6, 21.8
- Near the altar, use the Abyssal Fragments from your inventory
After activating 20 fragments, you will receive the
Abhorrent Essence of the Abyss.
/way #942 73.6 23.3 Cave entrance (waterfall)
/way #942 74.6 21.8 Altar of the Abyss
Step 3 — Summoning and Killing the Adherent of the Abyss
With the Essence in hand, head to Saltstone Mine, located south of Warfang Hold in the northern part of Stormsong Valley.
- The entrance to Saltstone Mine is at coordinates 46.6, 36.2
- Go deep into the cave to the end
- In the far part of the mine, you will find the Abyssal Icon at coordinates 45.1, 36.8
- Use the Abhorrent Essence of the Abyss near the Abyssal Icon
- A boss will appear — Adherent of the Abyss
/way #942 46.6 36.2 Saltstone Mine entrance
/way #942 45.1 36.8 Abyssal Icon (boss summon)
After killing the Adherent of the Abyss:
- The
Nazjatar Blood Serpent mount drops with a guaranteed chance (100%) for the player who summoned the boss - Other group members receive the
Aether of the Abyss — a cosmetic item

How to Get to Stormsong Valley
Stormsong Valley is located in the northern part of Kul Tiras. The route depends on your faction.
Alliance
- Use the portal to Boralus from the portal room in Stormwind (or from Dornogal via the Stormwind portal)
- From Boralus, head north — you can reach Stormsong Valley by land or using a flight path
- If you haven't unlocked flight paths in Stormsong Valley, pick up the "Stormsong Valley" quest from the mission board in Boralus Harbor
Horde
- Unlock access to Kul Tiras through the War Campaign in Zandalar
- Establish an outpost in Stormsong Valley (Warfang Hold)
- Once unlocked, you can teleport to the outpost via the war ship in Zandalar's port
Quick Route (Both Factions)
- If you already have flight paths unlocked, simply fly to the nearest node to Saltstone Mine
- A mage can teleport you with a portal to Boralus
- From Dornogal — portal to your faction capital, then portal to Boralus (Alliance) or war ship (Horde)
Farming Optimization
- The Auction House is your friend. Abyssal Fragments are tradeable and sellable. If the auction price is reasonable, buy all 20 fragments and save hours of farming. In The War Within era, fragments are often cheap due to low demand.
- Best farming spot for fragments. Stormsong Valley, the coast and areas with Void cultists. Mobs respawn quickly, and at high level you kill them instantly.
- Alternative farming spot. Atal'gral in Zuldazar — many naga here that can also drop fragments.
- No group needed. At max level (80) in The War Within gear, the Adherent of the Abyss poses no threat. You can easily solo it in a few seconds.
- One-time mount. The mount is bound on pickup and obtained once. You cannot re-summon the boss for a second mount. Make sure your character is the one who uses the Essence for the summon.
Tips
1
Before heading to the Altar of the Abyss, make sure you have exactly 20 Abyssal Fragments in your inventory. Fewer will not activate the altar.
2
If you play Horde and haven't unlocked access to Kul Tiras, you need to complete the initial War Campaign quests. This takes about 30–40 minutes.
3
The cave entrance to the Altar of the Abyss is hidden behind a waterfall — easy to miss if you don't know the exact coordinates. Use the /way macro for navigation.
4
Saltstone Mine is a regular open-world cave, not a dungeon. You do not need to queue for a group.
5
The mount is account-bound — once obtained on one character, you can use it on all others.
6
The Nazjatar Blood Serpent is a classic flying mount. It does not support Dragonriding and uses the standard flight model.
7
Minimum requirement to use the mount is level 10 and the Apprentice Riding skill.
