Overview

Neurosurgeon's Tool

Game iconNeurosurgeon's Tool is an uncommon one-handed dagger added to World of Warcraft with the Cataclysm expansion. The model uses a short blade with a crude wooden handle and a narrow edge — the look of a surgical or butcher's implement rather than a combat weapon. This fits the item's name and lore perfectly: the dagger is awarded for helping Calder Gray, a Forsaken researcher who is assembling a monstrous creation out of body parts.

In terms of stats the item carries Intellect and Stamina, so it was originally meant for classes that rely on the power of the mind: priests, mages, warlocks, druids, shamans and evokers. For transmogrification the role's stats are irrelevant — the dagger's appearance is available to any class that can wield daggers once the item is bound to the character.

The value of this dagger lies precisely in its unremarkable, "everyday" silhouette. It does not sparkle with enchantments and does not try to look epic — it is a working tool, and that is exactly how it looks in a character's hands.

Source

The Neurosurgeon's Tool is a reward from the quest "Smarts-is-Smarts". It is part of the Forsaken chain in the Southern Barrens zone, devoted to building an abomination out of the body parts of fallen soldiers.

Key details for obtaining it:

  • The quest is given by Forsaken researcher Calder Gray in the Southern Barrens.
  • "Smarts-is-Smarts" is the final quest of Calder's short chain: first he needs hearts and other body parts, and only then — "fresh brains."
  • To complete it you must kill a captain from Honor's Stand on the far side of the Battlescar and collect the Game iconFresh Brain.
  • The quest is done once per character. The dagger's appearance unlocks in the collection once the reward is bound to the character.
  • The chain is designed for low level and is easily soloed. Through Chromie Time the zone can be accessed by a character of any level.

If your goal is the appearance and not the item itself, it is enough to choose the dagger in the reward window. Binding on pickup already adds the look to your collection.

Alternatives

The Neurosurgeon's Tool is one of several reward choices from the same "Smarts-is-Smarts" quest. The dagger model itself has no direct recolors, but while completing the quest you can take only one item, so the remaining rewards are "neighbors" in the choice rather than alternative appearances of the dagger.

Chestguard of Abomification Game iconChest, mail

If it is specifically the dagger's appearance you want, choose the Neurosurgeon's Tool — the other items in this window are armor and do not replace the dagger.

Who it suits visually

  • Suits looks built around a craft or a trade — alchemists, healers, butchers, undertakers. The crude wooden handle and narrow blade read as a tool, not a weapon.
  • Harmonizes with dark leather and cloth sets in muted earthy tones — the blade does not steal attention and works as a detail rather than an accent.
  • Looks good as a paired weapon with another plain dagger: for a "working" look what matters is inconspicuousness, not the symmetry of richly decorated blades.
  • Fits a necromancer or corpse-collector concept — it is literally an item from a Forsaken chain about creating an abomination, and thematically it lands in such a look precisely.
  • Contrasts with bright enchanted blades and dress plate sets — next to them a plain tool looks out of place.

Tips

1

The "Smarts-is-Smarts" quest takes a few minutes: the trip to the far side of the Battlescar, one kill and the return to Calder Gray.

2

The appearance counts even if you are not going to use the dagger — the main thing is for the reward to be bound to the character on pickup.

3

Through Chromie Time you can reach the Southern Barrens with a character of any level, so collecting the look is convenient on a leveling alt.

4

The dagger carries Intellect, so while doing the quest it makes sense to take it on a character that relies on the power of the mind — the appearance unlocks all the same.

5

If a character has the goal of collecting more appearances, it is worth running Calder Gray's whole chain: the neighboring quests in the Southern Barrens give other green items with their own looks.

6

The dagger is of uncommon quality, so it qualifies for transmogrification — appearances are added from items of uncommon quality and above.

7

Before you sell or disenchant the dagger, make sure the appearance is already shown in the appearance collection.
