Overview

Nilganihmaht Control Ring

The Nilganihmaht Control Ring is a collector's item that teaches the secret ground mount Hand of Nilganihmaht. The mount was added in the Shadowlands expansion (patch 9.1 "Chains of Domination") and is a giant golden severed hand that crawls along the ground carrying its rider. It is one of the most unusual and recognizable mounts in the game.

According to the lore, Nilganihmaht was an arrogant giant who dared to challenge the Jailer. As punishment, Zovaal severed his hand, hid it behind a veil of torment in the Maw, and scattered five rings across the zone that are needed to restore the hand's power. To assemble the mount, you must find all five rings, return them to the Hand of Nilganihmaht in Upstart's Bower (a Maw phase) and complete the quest Gotta Hand It To Ya.

Why you want this mount

  • Unique model — a giant golden crawling hand looks like no other mount in the game. Such a rare visual is owned by no more than 5–10% of collectors
  • Prestige secret puzzle — earning the mount requires solving riddles scattered across the Maw, tied to different assaults and a phase. There is no other content like it in Shadowlands
  • 10 out of 10 speed — as a ground mount it grants +60% or +100% movement speed depending on your riding skill
  • Account-wide — once assembled, the Nilganihmaht Control Ring unlocks the mount on all your characters
  • Soloable — at level 90 in Midnight every Maw rare and assault can be done alone, making it a realistic weekend project for a prepared player

How to get it

The main path is to collect all five of Nilganihmaht's named rings, deliver them to the Hand in the Maw phase, and complete the quest Gotta Hand It To Ya.

  1. Unlock access to the Maw and Korthia. To do this it is enough to take a single character through the Shadowlands 9.0 and 9.1 story
  2. Buy the key consumables from Ve'nari in Ve'nari's Refuge: the Repaired Riftkey and, if you wish, the Collapsing Riftstone for phase access
  3. Find Nilganihmaht's Gold Band at the top of the mountain above Caleric — it is available at any time
  4. During the Necrolord assault, gather four Pieces of an Ancient Ring in the Citadel of Torment and forge Nilganihmaht's Stone Ring at the Soulsteel Forge
  5. Enter the phase via the Repaired Riftkey and kill the rare Torglluun. It drops Nilganihmaht's Runed Band with a 100% chance
  6. Collect four Seal Breaker Keys in Desmotaeron and open the Domination Sealed Chest — it holds Nilganihmaht's Silver Ring
  7. Create Domination's Calling by killing three heralds, summon Exos, Herald of Domination and loot Nilganihmaht's Signet Ring from him
  8. In the Maw phase, return to the Hand of Nilganihmaht in the Upstart's Bower cave at coordinates 25.5, 36.8 and place all five rings one by one
  9. Accept the quest Gotta Hand It To Ya and receive the Nilganihmaht Control Ring as a reward

Requirements and preparation

  • A character level 60 or higher who has completed the 9.0 and 9.1 story for access to the Maw, Korthia and Desmotaeron
  • Reputation with Ve'nari of at least Cordial — needed to buy the Repaired Riftkey and the Collapsing Riftstone
  • The Korthia storyline completed — it opens the Maw phase and the reinforcement mechanic
  • An optional helper — the Trained Mawrat Wrangler from Archivist Roh-Suir in Korthia helps you find Pieces of an Ancient Ring and the seal-breaker keys
  • 10–15 free inventory slots — for keys, etchings, rare drops and Ve'nari consumables

Route preparation

  • Before heading into the Maw, open the map and mark the spots: Cradle of Ruin (Runed), Caleric (Gold), Altar of Domination (Signet), Desmotaeron (Silver), Citadel of Torment (Stone)
  • Stock up on speed potions; the weekly Korthia hearthstone and your covenant hearthstone will speed up travel
  • At level 90 any Maw rare dies in 10–30 seconds, so no special gear is required

Detailed path through the rings

Gold Band — the easiest

Nilganihmaht's Gold Band lies at the top of an icy mountain above Caleric at coordinates /way 19.2, 32.3. The climb begins at /way 19.08, 38.50 — follow the narrow path along the icy wall and take your time so you don't fall. Available at any time, requires no kills.

Stone Ring — requires the Necrolord assault

This is the only ring that requires an active Necrolord assault in the Maw and its associated quest "Drawing a Plan."

  1. Wait for the Necrolord assault rotation — it is active roughly once every 7–10 days
  2. In the Citadel of Torment, gather four Pieces of an Ancient Ring: from the Mawsworn chests, off slain elites, and from a random spawn on the floor
  3. Once you have all four, head to the Soulsteel Forge at /way 38.8, 39.7 and forge Nilganihmaht's Stone Ring

Runed Band — a rare in the phase

  1. Buy the Repaired Riftkey from Ve'nari and activate it at the rift portal in Korthia
  2. Enter the Maw phase and make your way to the Cradle of Ruin (/way 28.7, 25.0)
  3. Kill Torglluun — Nilganihmaht's Runed Band drops with a 100% chance

Silver Ring — a four-lock chest

The Domination Sealed Chest stands at /way 66.1, 57.4 in Desmotaeron and requires four Seal Breaker Keys:

  • The first key — from the elite rare Ylva at /way 66.3, 42.1 after the quest A Hand and a Key for the Feeder
  • The second key — a random drop from Helgarde's stockpiles
  • The third key — lies on a house wall at /way 66.91, 56.09; go down the stairs and look along the right wall
  • The fourth key — drops from an elite in the Helgarde citadel

Signet Ring — the chain of heralds

  1. Kill three heralds to collect etchings: Talaporas, Herald of Pain (/way 28.9, 11.6), Apholeas, Herald of Loss (/way 19.4, 41.4), Ekphoras, Herald of Grief (/way 42.1, 21.2)
  2. Combine the three etchings into Domination's Calling
  3. Use Domination's Calling at the Altar of Domination (/way 46.0, 47.7), summon and kill Exos, Herald of Domination
  4. He drops Nilganihmaht's Signet Ring

Final assembly

When all five rings are in your bags, head to the Maw phase to the Upstart's Bower cave at coordinates 25.5, 36.8. Inside stands the Hand of Nilganihmaht — a huge stone hand with five pedestals for the rings.

  1. Use each ring on the Hand one at a time
  2. After the fifth ring, the hand glows with golden light and activates
  3. Pick up and turn in the quest Gotta Hand It To Ya
  4. As a reward you receive the Nilganihmaht Control Ring — equip it right away and learn the Hand of Nilganihmaht mount

Tips

1

Start with the Gold Band — the easiest stage, it gives quick motivation and requires no consumables or assault

2

Watch the assault rotation — the Necrolord assault doesn't have to be the current one, but without it the Stone Ring is impossible. Check the schedule before visiting the Maw

3

Buy the Trained Mawrat Wrangler — it finds hidden treasures, seal-breaker keys and Pieces of an Ancient Ring, saving hours of farming

4

Don't spend Domination's Calling too early — the item has a 24-hour cooldown but is not consumed. Before first use, make sure you have enough elementals to kill Exos

5

Don't hunt rares solo at a low level — at level 90 in Midnight everything is soloable, but at level 60 Exos and Torglluun may require a group

6

All rings are character-bound and are deleted after turning in the quest — you will have to repeat the progress on every new collector, but the mount is already account-wide

7

Only enter the phase through the official key — the alternative Collapsing Riftstone works only in a few locations and is not suitable for the whole route
