Overview

Obsidian Goaltending Spire

Game iconObsidian Goaltending Spire is a two-handed staff of rare quality, added to World of Warcraft with the Dragonflight expansion. The model belongs to the dracthyr weapon family: a dark obsidian shaft with carved black-and-gray plates and smoldering orange-gold inlays near the head. The silhouette is massive and angular, with a clear "draconic" character typical of weapons from the Dragon Isles.

The staff's name is a nod to its source. It drops from the boss of an arena where a ball game is played, so the look plays on the "goaltender" theme: the head resembles a trap for a projectile. The palette pairs cold obsidian with warm embers within, which makes the staff versatile for dark and "fiery-dark" looks.

By gameplay standards this weapon has long been irrelevant in combat — the level cap in Midnight is 90, and the staff's stats no longer matter. The item's value today is purely cosmetic: for the sake of an appearance for transmogrification.

Source

The appearance is obtained from the Algeth'ar Academy dungeon — a Dragonflight location set in the Thaldraszus zone on the Dragon Isles.

  • The dungeon entrance is at the foot of the tower in Thaldraszus, next to the meeting stone. Coordinates: /way Thaldraszus 58.3 42.4.
  • The staff drops from Crawth — the third boss of the dungeon, who has taken over the ball-game arena.
  • The drop chance is about 2.3% per kill. It is a random drop from the boss's general loot pool.
  • Any difficulty works: Normal, Heroic, Mythic, and Mythic+. The appearance is the same across all versions, so the easiest difficulty is enough.
  • There is no attempt limit: the dungeon can be reset without restrictions, going in for the drop as many times as you like.

The good news is that Algeth'ar Academy is part of the Mythic+ rotation for the current Midnight season, so the dungeon is relevant again and easy to find in the group finder. That said, for farming the appearance it is simpler to run Normal or Heroic difficulty solo.

Who It Suits Visually

  • It harmonizes with dark plate and leather sets from Dragonflight in a black-and-obsidian palette — the shaft echoes the texture of dragon scales.
  • It looks good in "fiery-dark" outfits: the smoldering orange inlays of the head match sets that feature lava or embers.
  • It suits specializations that use staves: druids, hunters, and monks — especially for concepts tied to dragons and the Dragon Isles.
  • It works as a contrast with light cloth sets — the massive black shaft becomes an accent, debatable but memorable.

Tips

1

To farm the appearance, run Normal or Heroic difficulty solo: at level 90 Algeth'ar Academy is cleared with ease.

2

Crawth is the third boss, so you won't be able to rush straight to him: you'll have to clear the two previous bosses and the trash before them.

3

The appearance is identical across all difficulties, so there's no point going into Mythic+ specifically for the drop — the easiest version is enough.

4

The drop is random, about 2.3%, so plan for several runs and check all the loot from the boss, not just the weapon.

5

If you're already running the dungeon in this Midnight season's Mythic+ rotation, collect the appearance along the way — separate farming won't be needed then.

6

Before collecting, check that your class can wield staves: otherwise you won't be able to apply the appearance through transmogrification.

7

Once obtained, the appearance is saved in the collection account-wide — there's no need to farm it again for other characters.

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
