Malavita first discovered World of Warcraft in Draenor, but truly got into the game with the Shadowlands expansion. Has a soft spot for Demon Hunters and Mages. Considers her main goal to be collecting as many mounts as possible.

Onyx Cloud Serpent is an epic flying mount added in patch 5.0.4 of the Mists of Pandaria expansion. It is a black cloud serpent with a sleek, sinuous body and dark purple accents — one of several cloud serpents available through the factions of Pandaria.
The mount is a reward for completing the quest Surprise Attack! in the Townlong Steppes. To unlock this quest, you must reach Exalted reputation with the Shado-Pan faction.
Note: previously, using cloud serpents required a separate "Cloud Serpent Riding" skill from the Order of the Cloud Serpent. This restriction was removed in later patches — flying the Onyx Cloud Serpent now requires only the standard riding skill.
Acquiring the mount involves two stages: grinding Shado-Pan reputation up to Exalted and completing a short chain of two quests.
The Shado-Pan faction are the elite guardians of Pandaria, based at the Shado-Pan Garrison in the Townlong Steppes.
After reaching Exalted with the Shado-Pan:
The Shado-Pan Garrison is located in the southwestern part of the Townlong Steppes. It is the faction's main base, home to the quest givers and the quartermaster.
The total number of points needed to reach Exalted is 42,000 from Neutral. The story quests will cover a significant portion of the way.
At the Shado-Pan Garrison, one of three sets of daily quests is available each day (they rotate randomly):
| NPC | Quest Theme | Location |
|---|---|---|
| Lin of the Six Lakes | Fighting the Sha | Sha Islet |
| Master Snowdrift | Arena Battles | Shado-Pan Garrison |
| Bandit Hidden Master | Defense Against the Mantid | Garrison Perimeter |
Each set consists of several quests and yields about 1,350 reputation points.
In Mists of Pandaria, the first random dungeon of the day run with Shado-Pan gear grants additional reputation points. Pandaria scenarios also award reputation.
| Strategy | Time to Exalted |
|---|---|
| Daily quests only | 3–4 weeks |
| Dailies + commendation (from Honored) | 2–3 weeks |
| With boosters and dailies | 2 weeks |
At max level, everything is trivial. At level 80, Pandaria mobs pose no threat, and the daily quests are completed in mere minutes. The only limit is the daily cooldown on the daily quests
The fight against Hei Feng is simple. Despite his impressive health pool (8.7 million), the boss is designed for level 90 characters. At the current max level he dies in a few seconds. Just attack him when he lands
Combine it with other Pandaria factions. While you grind the Shado-Pan, you can simultaneously work on reputation with the August Celestials and the Kirin Tor Offensive to maximize the efficiency of your Pandaria visits
Buy the riding tigers. Upon reaching Exalted with the Shado-Pan, three tiger mounts also become available from the quartermaster Rushi the Fox: the Reaping (Rice) Reaper, Blue Reaper, and Green Reaper — for 2,500 gold each. Grab them while you're at it
Use the SavedInstances addon to track reputation progress across several characters if you decide to grind in parallel
The Mogu Incursions quest appears automatically. After reaching Exalted, simply visit Master Snowdrift at the Shado-Pan Garrison — an exclamation mark above his head will indicate the available quest
