WoW Forever Retribution Paladin — Spec Changes

Spec Overview

Melee, damage. In Forever, Retribution gained an active melee attack, stopped losing its seal after Game iconJudgement, and picked up an echo mechanic for swapping seals. On top of that, hit and crit from gear now apply to both physical and Holy damage at once, so items are easier to pick.

In Classic the tree had no active attack at all: you swung on auto-attacks under a seal, cast Game iconJudgement and Game iconConsecration for as long as mana allowed. Now the rhythm is much denser.

Class Changes

Crusader Strike and Keeping the Seal

Crusader Strike appears at level six and gives the tree a proper damage button. Game iconJudgement no longer consumes the active seal, so the constant re-application from the rotation is gone.

Holy Arbiter makes Crusader Strike refresh all Game iconJudgement effects on the target. That means, by staying in melee, you keep your debuffs up through damage rather than by re-casting Game iconJudgement onto a support seal.

Game iconVindication gives your melee attacks a chance to lower the enemy's attack power while raising your own at the same time.

Game iconVengeance is reworked: instead of an eight-second damage boost after a crit, it is now a 30-second buff that stacks up to five times. It takes a few crits to build, but the long duration lets you carry stacks across short repositions and between adjacent targets.

Echoes and Seal-Swapping

Glimmer of Light grants an echo whenever you swap Game iconSeal of Command, Game iconSeal of Righteousness, Seal of Fury or Game iconSeal of Justice for another seal. Your next melee attack applies the swapped seal's effect and consumes the echo.

The point is that you get two seals' effects on a single attack, without trying to hit the tiny window before a swing like you did in Classic. The cost remains: an extra seal cast spends mana and the global cooldown, competing with Crusader Strike, Game iconJudgement and support spells.

An important limitation: Glimmer of Light requires 31 points in Retribution, while Game iconHoly Shock requires 21 points in Holy. In a 51-point build you cannot take both, so seal-swapping through echoes and a combat build through Game iconHoly Shock are two different paths.

Gear for Two Damage Types

The tree directly benefits from items where hit and crit are shared: the same bonus helps both weapon and spells. Hybrid pieces are easier to pick than in Classic, where you had to separate melee crit and spell crit.

Protector of the Light turns Intellect into bonus spell damage and healing, so a piece with Intellect improves your Holy damage, not just your mana pool. At the same time, the Strength, weapon damage and the item's other stats do not vanish when compared against a purely combat upgrade.

Game iconConviction still refers specifically to melee crit: a shared stat from gear does not extend the talent to all spells.

Threat, Enemy Types and PvP

Hand of the Law lowers your threat while Game iconRighteous Fury is turned off. Keep Game iconRighteous Fury disabled when you are just dealing damage — then the talent trims threat from your Holy spells too.

Crusade grants bonus damage against Undead and Demons on top of the general bonus. Game iconExorcism and Game iconHoly Wrath also work against them; against other enemy types the tree has almost no ranged options.

In PvP, Crusader Strike makes your time in melee more productive, but you still need to reach the target and stick to it. Game iconPursuit of Justice and Game iconBlessing of Freedom help with movement, while Game iconHammer of Justice and Game iconRepentance create windows to attack. The tree has no reliable slow and no dedicated interrupt, so crowd control is best coordinated with a partner.

Key Abilities Overview

Crusader Strike

Crusader Strike is the tree's main attack. With the Holy Arbiter talent it also refreshes all Game iconJudgement effects on the target, and with Hand of the Law its damage does not drag along extra threat.

Judgement and Seals

Game iconJudgement keeps the seal up. Game iconSeal of Command adds extra Holy damage from a portion of weapon damage, Game iconSeal of Righteousness gives a steady bonus to each hit, Game iconSeal of Justice slows. Game iconImproved Judgement shortens the cooldown of Game iconJudgement by 2 seconds.

Hammer of Wrath and Finishing

Game iconHammer of Wrath remains a way to finish a low-health target, and Conduit of the Light makes it cheaper along with Game iconConsecration, Game iconHoly Wrath and Game iconExorcism by 40%.

Vengeance and Conviction

Game iconVengeance builds up to five stacks and lasts 30 seconds, Game iconConviction at five points gives 5% melee crit. Together they make up the bulk of the tree's scaling.

Control and Mobility

Game iconRepentance takes a target out of the fight for six seconds, Game iconHammer of Justice stuns, Game iconPursuit of Justice at two points gives 16% movement speed. Game iconEye for an Eye returns part of the damage from crits taken on you.

Baseline

Game iconBlessing of Might, Game iconBlessing of Wisdom, Game iconBlessing of Kings and auras are handed out as usual, Game iconDivine Shield and Game iconLay on Hands remain emergency buttons, Game iconCleanse removes effects.

Talents Overview

The Retribution tree holds 46 points out of a 51-point budget. It is taken in full, and the five spare points go into Game iconDivine Strength from the Holy tree — plus 10% Strength, meaning a direct boost to weapon damage and Crusader Strike.

This is not a ready-made leveling build. It is only a sample point distribution for reference.

Weapon Choice

Retribution is the only Paladin tree built for two-handed weapons: Game iconTwo-Handed Weapon Specialization directly grants 9% two-handed weapon damage. A slow two-hander with high damage per hit is preferable to a fast one, because Game iconSeal of Command and seals scale from weapon damage.

Among stats, Strength and melee crit take priority: Game iconConviction and Game iconVengeance work off exactly those. Hit is especially valuable, because in Forever the same bonus from an item helps both weapon and spells.

Intellect is no longer a junk stat: Protector of the Light turns it into a bonus to spell damage and healing. That does not mean an item with Intellect beats an item with Strength — you have to compare the whole thing — but you can no longer ignore Intellect.

Weapon Skill kept its old mechanic, but the bonuses to it on items have become smaller. Pieces you were used to taking for Weapon Skill in Classic should now be compared against alternatives rather than picked automatically.
