Preyseeker's Nightmare

Preyseeker's Nightmare

inv_manawyrm2mount_3Preyseeker's Nightmare — one of the most prestigious mounts of the Midnight expansion. This golden mana serpent is obtained by players who defeat all 30 targets of the Prey system on nightmare difficulty. The mount is awarded automatically upon earning the achievement Prey: Nightmare Mode III.

Golden mana serpents are a rare mutation, and Astralor conducted separate experiments to increase their numbers. This mount is a flying one, and one of the few that truly requires effort to obtain.

What Is the Prey System

Prey is a new open-world activity in Midnight. You accept contracts to hunt powerful elite enemies scattered across the zones of Quel'Thalas. The system is managed from Astralor's Sanctuary in Silvermoon and offers three difficulty levels: normal, hard, and nightmare.

During a hunt, you complete activities in the zone — world quests with the Prey icon, destroy suffering spawns, and disarm traps. The target periodically ambushes you and retreats at 50% health, until it finally engages in the final fight.

Each difficulty has a weekly restriction: one hunt per difficulty, per zone, per week. Progress counts toward a world-content slot in the Great Vault.

Rewards

The Prey system offers more than just mounts. Full reward list:

Requirements and How to Start

Level and Preparation

  • Character at level 90 (Midnight's max level)
  • Complete the introductory Midnight campaign up to unlocking Silvermoon

Quest Chain to Unlock

The system unlocks through a short quest chain from Magister Astralor Bloodsworn in the Assassins' Alley, Silvermoon:

  1. Prey: Astralor's Initiative — meet Astralor at the harbor
  2. Power of Suffering — learn about the Prey mechanics
  3. When the Hunter Becomes the Prey — complete the first training hunt
  4. To the Sanctuary! — unlock Astralor's Sanctuary and the hunt table

After this, normal difficulty becomes available.

How to Unlock Nightmare Difficulty

Nightmare mode doesn't unlock immediately — you need to progress through the seasonal track called Preyseeker's Journey.

Preyseeker's Journey — Ranks and Rewards

Rank What Unlocks
1 Quest chain for hard mode
2 Random hunts
3 Purchase cosmetic armor
4 Quest chain for nightmare mode
5 Mount "Preyseeker's Pride"
6 Hearthstone toy, transmog items
7 +20% to Echoes of Suffering earned
8 "Exquisite Pedestal" decoration
9 Pet "Little Hunter"
10 Random hunts; mount "Preyseeker's Wrath"

How to Earn Preyseeker's Journey Points

  • The first 4 hunts per week grant 1,000 points each
  • Each additional hunt in the same week grants 50 points
  • Progress is account-wide

The most efficient approach is to do exactly 4 hunts per week. To speed things up, you can hunt on multiple characters (points are combined account-wide).

After reaching Rank 4, the quest chain "Sacrifices for the Greater Good" will open, unlocking nightmare difficulty on the hunt table.

Nightmare Mode Mechanics

Nightmare hunts are exclusively solo content. Groups are not allowed, and help from other players is impossible.

Torment

Damage taken increases by 4% stacking, accumulating every 60 seconds. The longer the hunt lasts, the deadlier each attack becomes. This is the primary timer preventing you from dragging out the fight.

Bloody Command

Astralor periodically demands that you kill any creature within 20 seconds. Failing to do so applies a powerful periodic damage effect. The trick: Astralor doesn't care what you kill. The nearest critter (squirrel, rabbit, crab) counts. Keep killable creatures in sight near your fight area.

Shadow Clone

A ghostly copy of your character pursues you, dealing damage when it gets close. You must constantly move and dodge.

Damage Pools

Damage zones periodically appear under your feet, requiring quick repositioning.

Full Target List — 30 Nightmare Hunts

To earn the achievement Prey: Nightmare Mode III, you must defeat all 30 targets on nightmare difficulty. Targets are spread across Midnight zones.

The achievement consists of three tiers:

# Target # Target
1 Magister Sunshatter 16 Magistrix Cinderscorch
2 Senior Mechanist Ozwold 17 L-N-0R Recycler
3 Mordril Shadowstep 18 Delia Gloomsong

5 Jo'zolo the Destroyer 20 Zadu, Fist of Nalorakk
6 Claw of Jan'ali 21 Wing of Akil'zon

13 The Lost Teldrin 28 Neidra the Insatiable
14 Thornwhisper Edgat 29 Thorn Witch Lizet
15 Grotoz, the Burning Shadow 30 Dengzag, the Darkened Flame

Targets are available at the hunt table in Astralor's Sanctuary. Each week, you can complete one nightmare hunt per zone.

Step-by-Step Path to the Mount

  1. Reach level 90 and complete the introductory Midnight campaign
  2. Unlock the Prey system — complete the 4-quest chain from Astralor in Assassins' Alley, Silvermoon
  3. Earn Preyseeker's Journey ranks — do 4 hunts weekly for maximum efficiency
  4. Reach Rank 4 — complete the "Sacrifices for the Greater Good" quest chain to unlock nightmare mode
  5. Defeat targets on nightmare difficulty — methodically clear all 30 targets
  6. Earn the achievement — after defeating the last target, the mount appears in your collection automatically

Tips for Nightmare Mode

Choosing a Specialization

Tank specializations have a significant advantage thanks to their innate survivability. If your class has a tank spec — use it. All targets are vulnerable to crowd control, so any class can handle it, but tanks have an easier time weathering Torment's scaling damage.

Managing Torment

Damage increases every minute, so speed is your greatest ally. Pick talents and abilities that increase your damage output to finish the fight before Torment becomes lethal. That said, don't neglect defensive cooldowns — balancing damage and survivability is crucial.

Bloody Command — The Easy Solution

When Astralor demands a kill, don't waste time on strong enemies. Find the nearest critter — a squirrel, rabbit, or crab — and kill it. This counts fully. Before starting a hunt, note where critters are nearby.

Consumables

Use potions, food, and runes from current content. Amani Extracts have been buffed by 100% specifically for solo content — stock up before each hunt.

Optimal Pacing

Don't try to clear all 30 targets in one week. Plan for 3-4 nightmare hunts per week (one per zone) — it takes 8-10 weeks, but you'll maximize Great Vault rewards in the process.

Additional Mounts from the Prey System

Besides Preyseeker's Nightmare, the system offers two more mana serpent mounts:

Mount How to Obtain
inv_manawyrm2mount_1Preyseeker's Pride Reach Rank 5 of Preyseeker's Journey
inv_manawyrm2mount_2Preyseeker's Wrath Reach Rank 10 of Preyseeker's Journey

All three mounts are flying and differ by color variants. Preyseeker's Pride and Wrath can be earned alongside your progress toward Preyseeker's Nightmare simply by gaining ranks through weekly hunts.
