Overview

Rampaging Mauler

Game iconRampaging Mauler is an epic ground mount from the devourer family, added in patch 9.1 of the Shadowlands expansion. It is a large, dark-purple devourer with massive claws and a predatory stance. The mount drops from the rare elite mob Konthrogz the Obliterator in the Korthia zone, with a chance of around 2%.

The mount journal description reads: "You'd think a rampaging mount would be hard to control, but if you learn to channel the rampage, it can be quite useful."

Why You Want This Mount

  • Rare model — the Rampaging Mauler belongs to the Shadowlands devourer family. Its dark-purple coloring stands out next to the two other variants: the blue Game iconTamed Mauler and the green Game iconSthaarbs's Last Lunch
  • Collector's value — the mount drops from only one specific rare mob in Korthia, and that mob itself does not spawn every time. The triple layer of randomness (rift spawn, boss selection, drop chance) makes this mount highly desirable for collectors
  • Available to all characters — once obtained, the mount becomes available on every character on your account
  • Minimal requirements — only level 10 and the riding skill are needed to use it

How Konthrogz the Obliterator Spawns

Konthrogz the Obliterator is not a regular rare mob with a fixed timer. He appears only after certain rare mobs are killed in Korthia: when one of them dies, there is a 50% chance to open a devourer rift, from which Konthrogz himself emerges after several waves of additional enemies.

When a rift opens, an announcement appears in the zone chat: "A massive devourer rips open a passage into Korthia". A yellow star appears on the zone map, marking the location of the rift.

Which Mobs Trigger Konthrogz's Spawn

Rare Mob Rift Chance Note
Reliwik the Defiant 100% Always opens a rift
Dominated Protector ~50% Standard chance
Malbog ~50% Can be force-spawned every 5 minutes
Consumption ~50% Standard chance
Zelnithop ~50% Standard chance

The following mobs do not trigger Konthrogz's spawn: Relic Gorger, Escaped Wilderling, Abandoned Staff of the Veil, the assault group supply transport.

Possible Rift Spawn Locations

The rift can open in several places across Korthia:

/way Korthia 52.2 21.1 Devourer Rift /way Korthia 44.6 29.6 Devourer Rift /way Korthia 51.6 41.6 Devourer Rift /way Korthia 56.6 67.6 Devourer Rift

If no one attacks Konthrogz, he will begin patrolling Korthia toward Keeper's Respite. There he can be killed by the local defending NPCs, so it is important to reach him in time.

Step-by-Step Guide to Obtaining It

  1. Unlock access to Korthia. To do this, complete the first two chapters of the patch 9.1 "Chains of Domination" story campaign. The campaign begins with the quest "Opening the Maw" and includes rescuing Baine Bloodhoof from Torghast and your first meeting with Ve'nari
  2. Get to Korthia. From Oribos, use the portal to the Maw and then make your way to Korthia. After completing the intro quests, a portal to Korthia will appear directly in Oribos
  3. Find and kill a rare mob from the list above. The optimal strategy is to deliberately hunt for Reliwik the Defiant, since he is guaranteed to trigger a rift. Reliwik spawns in the southern part of Korthia (around 56.3, 66.2), but he is on a rotation and is not available every day
  4. Wait for the zone chat announcement. If a rift has opened, a message will appear in chat and a yellow star will appear on the map. Head to the marked point immediately
  5. Destroy the waves of additional enemies. Several waves of mobs will emerge from the rift. Once they are destroyed, Konthrogz the Obliterator himself will appear
  6. Kill Konthrogz and grab the loot. The boss has a large health pool that scales with the number of attackers. At current character level the fight poses no challenge and is easily soloed
  7. Check your loot. If the mount did not drop, repeat the next day or on another character

Farming and Optimization

Daily Lockout

Loot from Konthrogz is available once per day per character. To check whether you have killed him today, type the following into the in-game chat:

/run print(C_QuestLog.IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(64246))

If true appears in chat, your attempt for today has been used up. If false, you can farm.

Alt Farming

Since loot is available once per day per character, the most efficient way to speed up getting the mount is to farm on several alts. Each additional character with access to Korthia is one more daily attempt.

Attempt Calculation

At a drop chance of ~2%, the average number of kills before obtaining the mount is around 50. If you farm on a single character, that is roughly 50 days (assuming Konthrogz spawns every day). With five alts, this timeline drops to 10 days on average.

However, due to the triple layer of randomness (not every mob triggers a rift, the rift opens with a 50% chance, the drop is ~2%), real timelines can vary significantly. Some players got the mount on their first kill, while others needed more than 70 attempts.

Optimal Farming Strategy

  • Priority — Reliwik the Defiant. He is guaranteed to trigger a rift, unlike the other mobs with a 50% chance. Check his availability every day
  • Malbog as a backup option. According to players, Malbog can be force-spawned roughly every 5 minutes with a specific route, which gives more attempts per session
  • Watch the zone chat. Other players are also killing rare mobs in Korthia. If someone triggers a rift, you will see the announcement in chat and can join the fight
  • HandyNotes: Shadowlands addon. It places markers for all rare mobs and treasures on the Korthia map, greatly simplifying navigation

How to Get to Korthia

Via Oribos (main method)

  1. Get to Oribos, the central city of the Shadowlands. The portal to Oribos is located in Stormwind or Orgrimmar
  2. After completing the intro quest chain of patch 9.1, a direct portal to Korthia will appear in Oribos
  3. Use the portal and you will arrive at Keeper's Respite, the central hub of Korthia

Via the Maw

If the portal to Korthia is not yet open, use the portal to the Maw from Oribos and make your way to Korthia on foot, following the markers on the map.

Tips

1

The content is outdated — the fight is simple. At the current maximum level, Konthrogz the Obliterator poses no threat and is easily killed solo by any class. No special tactics are required

2

Don't skip other players' rifts. If you are in Korthia and see an announcement about a devourer appearing, drop everything and fly to the rift. You have about 3 minutes before other players kill the boss or it leaves for Keeper's Respite

3

Farm in parallel with other goals. While waiting for rare mobs to spawn, collect relic fragments, complete Korthia daily quests and build reputation with the Archivists

4

Check the rare mob rotation. Four mobs in Korthia (Consumption, Krrokorr the Tormented, Reliwik the Defiant, Zelnithop) are part of the daily rotation and do not spawn every day. Plan your farming accordingly

5

Use the check macro. The command /run print(C_QuestLog.IsQuestFlaggedCompleted(64246)) saves time — you will know for sure whether you need to log in on this character today

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
