Overview

Reins of the Raven Lord

Game iconReins of the Raven Lord is one of the most recognizable and sought-after mounts in World of Warcraft. It is a large raven with dark plumage and glowing eyes that drops from Anzu — the final boss of Sethekk Halls on heroic difficulty. The dungeon belongs to The Burning Crusade expansion and is located in Terokkar Forest in Outland.

The drop chance is approximately 1%. Once, summoning the boss required a druid who had completed the epic flight form quest chain, but that restriction was lifted long ago — since Warlords of Draenor, Anzu appears in the dungeon automatically for all classes. At level 90 in Midnight, a run takes about two minutes.

Why you want this mount

  • Iconic status — The Raven Lord is among the ten most popular mounts in WoW. Its dark silhouette is instantly recognizable in any location
  • Unique model — this is the only raven of such size and design among ground mounts. The bird looks imposing and stands out from any other mounts in your collection
  • Fast farming — a single run through Sethekk Halls takes no more than two minutes at max level. The boss is at the end of a short, linear dungeon
  • No prerequisites — there is no need to complete quest chains, earn reputation, or collect keys. Any level 90 character can enter heroic mode
  • Farming on multiple characters — the dungeon is tied to the daily reset rather than the weekly one, so each of your characters can enter once per day

How to get to Sethekk Halls

The dungeon is located in Auchindoun — a dungeon complex in the southern part of Terokkar Forest in Outland.

  1. Open a portal to Outland through Shattrath City. The portal is located in your faction's capital — in Stormwind (the Mage Tower) or Orgrimmar (the Cleft of Shadow). You can also use the portal to Shattrath from the portal room in Stormwind or Orgrimmar
  2. From Shattrath, fly south to Auchindoun — a large ruined complex with a ring structure, located around coordinates 43, 65 on the Terokkar Forest map
  3. The entrance to Sethekk Halls is on the eastern side of the ring. It is one of the four dungeon entrances of Auchindoun — look for the portal to the right of the central corridor
  4. Before entering, make sure the difficulty is set to heroic. Right-click your character portrait, select "Dungeon Difficulty," and switch to heroic mode. Anzu only appears on heroic difficulty

Clearing the dungeon

At level 90 in Midnight, the dungeon poses no challenge at all — every mob and boss dies in one or two hits.

  1. Enter the dungeon and head straight down the corridor. You can run without stopping — all enemies are destroyed instantly
  2. The first boss is Darkweaver Syth. He stands in the hall to the right. Kill him in a second and move on
  3. Continue along the corridor to the second large hall. Here, on the central platform, stands Anzu — a large demon raven
  4. Attack Anzu. At level 90, the fight ends in a couple of seconds. There are no dangerous mechanics — the boss does not have time to cast anything
  5. Check the loot. The Reins of the Raven Lord is a purple item that appears in the loot with a ~1% chance
  6. Leave the dungeon through the portal at the entrance or use a hearthstone

Farming optimization

Daily routine

The Burning Crusade heroic dungeons reset daily, not weekly. Each of your characters can enter Sethekk Halls once per day (after the server reset — 9:00 Moscow time for European servers).

One run at max level takes 1–2 minutes: run in, kill two bosses, check the loot, leave.

Farming on multiple characters

With a drop chance of ~1%, it takes about 100 attempts on average. If you have one character, that is roughly three and a half months of daily farming. By bringing in alts, you reduce this time proportionally:

Characters Attempts per day Average time to drop
1 1 ~100 days
3 3 ~33 days
5 5 ~20 days
10 10 ~10 days

To make farming on alts convenient, set each character's hearthstone to Shattrath or near Auchindoun. This will save travel time.

Resetting the dungeon

If the dungeon did not reset automatically (for example, you already entered today on this character), step outside, right-click your portrait, and select "Reset all instances." Remember that TBC heroic dungeons are limited to one run per day — resetting will only let you enter again after the server update.

Tips

1

Any class works — at level 90 there is no difference between classes. The dungeon is so weak that even a healer in a healing specialization will clear it without trouble

2

Don't forget to switch the difficulty — the most common mistake: a player runs into normal mode and doesn't see Anzu. The boss only appears on heroic difficulty

3

Combine with other farming — while you're in Outland, you can drop by The Eye for the inv_misc_summerfest_brazierorangeAshes of Al'ar or Karazhan for other mounts and transmog

4

Turning into a raven — when using the mount, your character rides atop a huge raven. The mount is ground-based but visually one of the most spectacular in the game

5

Check the loot right away — the Reins of the Raven Lord appears in the regular loot window. There is no need to open additional bags or chests

6

Account-wide — once obtained, the mount is unlocked for all your characters through the mount collection

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
