Red Mechanostrider

Red Mechanostrider is a classic racial ground mount of the gnomes, first added back in the original World of Warcraft. It is a mechanical bipedal walker in a bright red finish, created by the engineers of Gnomeregan as an alternative to the living mounts of other Alliance races. Visually the mount looks like a compact striding mechanism with spinning pistons and exhaust pipes — a true pride of gnomish engineering.

In 2026, in patch 11.1 of the The War Within expansion, the mount is still sold by the vendor Milli Featherwhistle in Dun Morogh. The cost is just 1 gold including the riding discount. Gnomes and mechagnomes can buy it without restrictions; the other Alliance races can do so after reaching Exalted with the Gnomeregan Exiles.

• Mount collector points — the mount counts toward achievements for the number of mounts collected. Each new mount in your collection brings you closer to rewards in the form of other mounts and titles.
• Gnomish racial flavor — if you play a gnome or a mechagnome, the mechanostrider is part of your race's cultural identity, a classic Gnomeregan vehicle.
• One of the four base colors — together with the Blue Mechanostrider, the Green Mechanostrider, and the Unpainted Mechanostrider, it forms the complete set of ordinary mechanical walkers that can be closed out in a single visit to the vendor.
• Account-wide access — after purchase the mount automatically appears in the collection of all your Alliance characters, including alts of other races.
• Ground mount speed — the mechanostrider moves +60% or +100% faster than normal walking, depending on your riding skill level. It is a full-fledged ground mount, not a decorative item.
• Minimal investment — the price of 1 gold makes this mount one of the cheapest additions to a collection in the game.

The requirements differ for gnomes and for the other Alliance races.

The Apprentice Riding skill grants a +60% movement speed bonus and is learned automatically at level 10 from any riding trainer. If you already have any other form of riding (Journeyman, Expert, Artisan), the mount will also work and grant the corresponding speed.

The vendor Milli Featherwhistle is located in the small settlement of Steelgrill's Depot in the central part of Dun Morogh, east of the village of Kharanos. This is the classic starting-experience zone of gnomes and dwarves, and you can get here by any convenient means.

From Ironforge

1. Open the map of Ironforge and exit the city through the main gate into Dun Morogh
2. Head southwest along the road through the snowy hills
3. Pass Kharanos and turn east — the settlement of Steelgrill's Depot is near the main road
4. Milli Featherwhistle stands next to the mechanostrider pen

From Stormwind

1. In Stormwind head to the Deeprun Tram station in the Mage Quarter
2. Board the Deeprun Tram to Ironforge
3. Exit in Ironforge and follow the instructions above

From a random zone at level 80

At max level the fastest option is to use a flight master or a hearthstone. The nearest flight master is located right in Kharanos — from there it is less than a minute's flight to Steelgrill's Depot.

If you play a gnome or a mechagnome

1. Reach character level 10
2. Learn Apprentice Riding from a riding trainer in Ironforge or any other capital
3. Fly or run to Steelgrill's Depot in Dun Morogh
4. Approach Milli Featherwhistle and open her wares
5. Buy the Red Mechanostrider for 1 gold
6. Use the item from your bag — the mount will be added to the collection for all your Alliance characters

If you play another Alliance race

1. Reach Exalted with the Gnomeregan Exiles. Details are in the next section
2. Learn Apprentice Riding
3. Travel to Milli Featherwhistle at Steelgrill's Depot
4. Buy the mount for 1 gold. At Exalted all four base mechanostriders become available at once — if you wish, close out the whole set in one go

For non-gnomes this is the longest stage. It can be sped up in several ways, and they are worth combining.

Gnomeregan Tabard

The main method is grinding dungeons with the Gnomeregan Tabard. The tabard is sold by the faction quartermaster Senior Mechanic Trip in Ironforge, in the Great Forge.

With the tabard equipped, you earn reputation with the Gnomeregan Exiles for killing enemies in dungeons of levels 1–80. The best options for fast farming at level 80 are the low-level dungeons of vanilla WoW, which can be cleared solo in a few minutes:

• The Deadmines
• Shadowfang Keep
• Scarlet Monastery

Quests in Dun Morogh and other zones

Most of the quests in the gnome and dwarf starting zone grant reputation with the Exiles faction. At level 80 you can quickly run through the quest chains of Dun Morogh, Stonetalon Mountains, Thousand Needles, and Tanaris — all of them contain tasks that reward Gnomeregan reputation.

Turning in cloth

In Ironforge there is an Alliance cloth quartermaster who accepts bundles of cloth in exchange for reputation with the capital factions. Turning in wool, silk, mageweave, and other types of cloth gives a noticeable reputation gain. The method is expensive if you buy the cloth on the auction house, but it works great for the last few thousand points to Exalted.

Reputation optimization tips

• Combine the tabard with quests: first finish all the Dun Morogh quests, then top up reputation with dungeon farm runs
• At level 80, solo runs through vanilla dungeons take 3–5 minutes. In an hour it is realistic to gain several thousand reputation points
• Remember that the tabard works only in dungeons, but not in open zones and not in raids

On a single visit to the vendor it makes sense to check the whole assortment. If your goal is a mount collection, close out all the ordinary colors at once.

Prices are shown with the riding discount applied, which is in effect at retail in the modern version of the game. The swift variants require Journeyman Riding and, consequently, character level 20.
