Red Qiraji Resonating Crystal
Overview

The
Red Qiraji Resonating Crystal is an epic ground mount added in patch 1.11.1 of the original World of Warcraft. It is a red-colored silithid battle tank — a giant bug your character rides through the corridors of the ancient temple. The mount drops from trash mobs in the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj raid dungeon with an extremely low chance — around 1%.
The red variant is significantly rarer than the other color versions (blue, green, and yellow). Obtaining this mount rewards the achievement "Why? Because It's Red". An important detail: the mount can be summoned only inside the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj — outside the instance it is unavailable.
Why You Want This Mount
- Collector's value — the red qiraji battle tank is the rarest of the four available colors. Many players obtain 15–20 blue, green, and yellow crystals before they ever see a red one.
- Achievement — obtaining the mount automatically awards the "Why? Because It's Red" achievement, which is displayed on your profile
- Mount counter — the mount counts toward your overall collection total and progresses you toward the mount-count achievements.
- Classic nostalgia — silithid battle tanks are a unique part of WoW history. The Ahn'Qiraj content was one of the key events of the original game, and the red bug is a symbol of that era.
- Unique model — the silithid tank is a massive bug with a distinctive movement animation. Inside the temple you'll look striking on a red mount while everyone else runs around on foot.
Requirements
To obtain the mount you need:
- A character that is level 17 or higher (the requirement since patch 9.0.1, but at level 80 in The War Within this is no constraint)
- The Apprentice riding skill — the minimum skill level
- Access to the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj raid dungeon in Silithus
How to Reach the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj
The Temple of Ahn'Qiraj is located in the southwest of Silithus, in the southern part of Kalimdor. At level 80, all Classic content is trivial and poses no challenge.
Alliance
- Use the portal to Dalaran (Broken Isles) or Stormwind
- From Stormwind, fly to Silithus — use a flight point or the portal to Uldum, and then head north
- Alternatively: portal to Dalaran (Northrend) → Caverns of Time → south through Tanaris into Silithus
Horde
- From Orgrimmar, use a flight point to Silithus
- Alternatively: portal to Dalaran → Caverns of Time → through Tanaris to the west
On Site
- Once in Silithus, head southwest to the coordinates [22, 87] — the entrance to the Ahn'Qiraj complex
- Pass through the Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj to the end of the corridor
- The entrance to the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj is behind the second gate — massive doors with scarab patterns
Step-by-Step Guide to Obtaining
Step 1: Preparation
At level 80 in The War Within you don't need a group — all of AQ40 can be cleared solo in just a few minutes. Make sure you have a riding skill and free space in your bags.
Step 2: Entering the Raid
Arrive at the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj in Silithus. Step inside — you'll find yourself in a large hall with groups of trash mobs.
Step 3: Killing Trash Mobs
The Red Qiraji Resonating Crystal drops from trash mobs in the instance. The main sources are:
- Qiraji Lashers — mobs in the opening halls
- Obsidian Destroyers — stone golems
- Anubisath Guardians — groups of 4 guardians at the instance entrance
- Other trash mobs throughout the raid
Kill every mob you encounter and check the loot. At level 80, each mob dies in one or two hits.
Step 4: Full Clear or Reset
You have two farming options:
Option A — Full Clear (once per week) Clear the entire raid, killing all trash mobs and bosses. This gives the maximum number of attempts in a single run, but locks you into the raid save for the week.
Option B — Resetting Trash Before the First Boss (repeatedly) This is the more efficient method:
- Enter the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj
- Kill the trash mobs in the opening halls, without touching the first boss (The Prophet Skeram)
- Leave the instance
- Reset all dungeons (right-click your portrait → "Reset all instances")
- Enter again — the trash will respawn
- Repeat up to 10 times per hour (the limit on instance entries)
Step 5: Receiving the Crystal
When the
Red Qiraji Resonating Crystal drops, use it — the mount will be learned and appear in your collection.
Farming Optimization
The Reset Method — Details
The method of resetting trash before The Prophet Skeram lets you get significantly more attempts than a single full clear per week. In one run you kill roughly 10–15 trash mobs, and each of them has a ~1% chance to drop the red crystal.
- 10 resets per hour — that's roughly 100–150 trash kills
- The math: with a 1% chance and 100 kills, the probability of getting at least one red crystal is around 63%
- Over 2–3 hours of active farming with resets, your odds become quite high
Instance Limit
World of Warcraft limits the number of instance entries: no more than 10 entries per hour per character. Plan your farming sessions around this limit. If you reach the cap — wait or switch to an alternate character.
Multiple Characters
You can farm the mount on several characters in parallel. Since the mount is account-bound, it doesn't matter which character it drops on — it will become available to all of them.
Optimal Route
- Enter AQ40
- Immediately turn left and clear the group of Anubisath Guardians
- Continue on, killing Qiraji Lashers and Obsidian Destroyers
- Stop before The Prophet Skeram's hall
- Exit, reset, repeat
Tips
Do not kill The Prophet Skeram if you're using the reset method — killing the boss will lock you into the raid save, and the trash will no longer respawn until the next week.
Parallel farming — while you wait for the instance limit to reset on one character, farm on another. The mount is account-bound.
Blue, green, and yellow crystals also drop from these mobs and count toward your collection. Don't discard them — each mount brings you closer to the mount-count achievements.
The mount only works inside AQ40 — don't count on using it in the open world. It is purely a collector's item and an achievement.
Check autoloot — enable automatic loot pickup in your interface settings so you don't miss a dropped crystal among the junk loot.
Classic content is outdated — at level 80 in The War Within the raid poses no challenge whatsoever. You can clear the entire instance in 10–15 minutes solo.
Combine it with gold farming — sell all the loot from AQ40 to a vendor. A full clear nets several hundred gold, which is decent as a side income.
Patience is the key to success — with a ~1% drop chance per mob, the red crystal can drop on your very first run or after dozens of attempts. Don't give up and keep farming.
