Ol' Mole Rufus
Overview

Regurgitated Mole Reins is a rare ground and flying mount added in the The War Within expansion (patch 11.0.2). The mount teaches you to ride Ol' Mole Rufus — a massive star-nosed mole that looks both ridiculous and endearing at the same time. The item drops from the rare elite mob Lurker of the Deeps in The Ringing Deeps — an underground region of Khaz Algar.
The Lurker of the Deeps is a giant kraken that must be summoned by simultaneously activating five Inconspicuous Levers scattered across the zone. This requires coordinating a group of at least five players, which makes this one of the most memorable "team" drops in The War Within.
Why You Want This Mount
- Unique model — Ol' Mole Rufus is the only mole mount in the game. The star-nosed mole with massive paws and amusing animations draws attention and stands out among standard mounts.
- The War Within content — the mount is relevant to the current expansion and the TWW S2 season. Obtaining a mount from fresh content is valued by collectors more highly than farming outdated dungeons.
- Social aspect — summoning the boss requires coordinating five players, turning routine farming into a group activity. It's a great excuse to team up with friends or your guild.
- Ground and flying — the mount works in every movement mode, including flight using Dynamic Flight.
- Account-wide — once learned, the mount becomes available to all characters on your account.
Requirements
- A level 80 character (recommended for comfortably killing the boss)
- Access to The Ringing Deeps (unlocked over the course of the main The War Within campaign)
- A group of at least 5 players to activate the levers simultaneously
- Riding skill (Apprentice, at minimum)
How to Reach The Ringing Deeps
The Ringing Deeps is an underground zone of Khaz Algar, located between the Isle of Dorn and Azj-Kahet. Access opens during the main The War Within storyline.
Quick Access
- Use the Opportunity Point flight point — the closest to the boss spawn location
- Alternatively, teleport to Dornogal and use the flight point network
- If you have a hearthstone set in The Ringing Deeps, use it to save time
Navigating the Zone
The Ringing Deeps is a multi-level underground zone. The levers are located in different parts of the zone at considerable distance from one another. Use Dynamic Flight to move quickly between points.
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Summon the Lurker of the Deeps
The Lurker of the Deeps does not roam the zone under normal conditions. To summon it, you must simultaneously activate five Inconspicuous Levers scattered across The Ringing Deeps.
Step 1: Gather a Group
You will need at least 5 players — one for each lever. Ways to find a group:
- Create or find a group through the Group Finder (Ctrl+I → Premade Groups → The Ringing Deeps / Lurker of the Deeps)
- Post in the zone's general chat:
/1 LFG Lurker of the Deeps — need 5 for levers - Put together a group from your guild or friends
Step 2: Assign the Levers
Each player takes a position at one of the five Inconspicuous Levers. Lever coordinates:
| Lever | Coordinates | Landmark |
|---|---|---|
| Lever 1 | /way The Ringing Deeps 49.4 8.8 | North of the zone, by the gates of the Radiant Abyss |
| Lever 2 | /way The Ringing Deeps 53.9 25.2 | Near the cart rails, ruined platform |
| Lever 3 | /way The Ringing Deeps 57.6 23.5 | Not far from Lever 2, closer to the Gates of Brilliance |
| Lever 4 | /way The Ringing Deeps 62.8 44.6 | Center of the zone, platform by the Shadow-Vein Point |
| Lever 5 | /way The Ringing Deeps 59.0 92.3 | South of the zone, by the gate next to two carts |
Step 3: Synchronized Activation
All five levers must be activated within 10 seconds of the first lever being pulled. Using a countdown is recommended:
- All players confirm readiness in the group chat
- The group leader starts a countdown with
/pull 10or/countdown 10 - On "0," everyone pulls their lever at the same time
Important: if the activation fails (not all levers were pulled in the allotted time), the levers go on a 30-second cooldown, after which you can try again.
Step 4: Get to the Boss
After a successful activation, a message appears in the zone chat: "The earthen machinery has started up, and something has stirred in the nearby lake." The boss appears roughly a minute later at the lake west of the Opportunity Point.
Every player has enough time to fly from their lever to the spawn point. Use Dynamic Flight for maximum speed.
Step 5: Kill the Lurker of the Deeps
The Lurker of the Deeps is a level 80 rare elite mob. Its abilities:
| Ability | Description |
|---|---|
| Water Bolt | Attacks a single target with frost magic damage |
| Water Bolt Volley | Deals frost damage to all players within 75 yards |
| Foam Blast | Frontal cone — deals frost damage and knocks back. Avoid it by standing to the side or behind the boss |
| Tidal Fury | AoE frost damage to all players within 60 yards |
Tactics: the tank turns the boss away from the group so that Foam Blast does not hit the others. The healer should be ready for periodic AoE damage from Tidal Fury. In a group of 5+ level 80 players, the boss goes down quickly and poses no serious threat.
Step 6: Collect the Loot
After the kill, check your loot.
Regurgitated Mole Reins drops with a chance of approximately 5–6%. Besides the mount, the boss can drop:
- Deepdread Cleaver
- Bloodied Deepwater Hunter's Hook
- Honed Scale Piercer
- Tidal Pendant
Farming Optimization
Daily Plan
- Open the Group Finder and find a group for the Lurker of the Deeps (search by keywords: "Lurker," "Mole," "Deeps")
- If there's no group — create your own and wait until 5 people gather
- Assign the levers, activate them in sync, kill the boss
- Repeat on alternate characters
Farming on Alts
Since the limit is one kill per day per character, each level 80 alt is an additional attempt. At a ~5% chance:
- 1 character: ~20 days of farming on average
- 3 characters: ~7 days on average
- 5 characters: ~4 days on average
Position your alts near the nearest flight point in advance so you don't waste time traveling.
Lever Respawn Time
According to the community, after the boss is killed the levers become available again in roughly 30–60 minutes. This matters if you want to organize several back-to-back runs for a group with alts.
Best Time to Look for a Group
Groups for the Lurker of the Deeps form more actively during server prime time (evening on server time). On weekends, finding a group is significantly easier.
Tips
Install the TomTom addon or use the built-in waypoints. Copy the lever coordinates from the table above — they'll help you quickly find each lever without wandering around the zone.
Use the Rarity addon. This addon tracks the number of attempts and calculates the probability of getting the mount, helping you monitor your farming progress.
Memorize your lever. If you farm regularly, pick one lever and memorize the route to it. This saves time on daily attempts.
Don't leave the group before looting. Make sure you are within loot range. If you are too far from the boss when it dies, you may not get the loot.
Foam Blast is dangerous. This is the fight's main mechanic — a frontal cone with knockback. Stand to the side or behind the boss to avoid the damage and a dangerous knockback into the water.
Combine it with other content. While you're in The Ringing Deeps, complete world quests and weekly quests — don't waste the trip on a single boss.
Check the Group Finder before creating your own. Often someone is already organizing a group for the Lurker. Joining an existing group is faster than putting together a new one.
The boss is accessible on alts below level 80. According to players, characters level 70+ can take part in the kill, though their DPS contribution will be minimal. Using level 80 characters is recommended for comfortable farming.
