Cobalt Riding Talbuk (Horde)
Overview

Reins of the Cobalt Riding Talbuk is a Horde ground mount added to World of Warcraft in The Burning Crusade expansion. It is a graceful blue-grey talbuk with sweeping branched antlers, one of eight riding beasts that the Mag'har orcs breed in the fields of Nagrand.
An important clarification: there are two faction versions of this mount that share the same name. The item with ID 31830 is sold only to Horde characters by Provisioner Nasela in Garadar in exchange for reputation with the Mag'har. Its mirror alternative is available only to the Alliance through the Kurenai faction in Telaar. The mount model is identical; only the vendor and the required reputation differ.
Why You Want This Mount
- Nagrand talbuk collection — Provisioner Nasela sells four riding and four war talbuks in different colors. The cobalt is one of the key and most recognizable variants.
- Counts toward mount-count achievements — useful for Stable Keeper and the later collector tiers.
- Account-wide access — once obtained, the mount unlocks for all Horde characters.
- Nostalgic model — talbuks remain among the most atmospheric ground mounts of Outland and pair perfectly with themed transmog.
- Side rewards from reputation — while you work toward Exalted with the Mag'har, you unlock Leatherworking and Alchemy recipes, as well as the
Mag'har Tabard for the Represent achievement.
Requirements
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Item | |
| Character faction | Horde only |
| Required reputation | Exalted with the Mag'har |
| Minimum level | 40 |
| Riding skill | Apprentice Riding (+60%) |
| Vendor cost | 70 gold |
| Mount type | Ground |
| Expansion | The Burning Crusade |
The minimum level of 40 is a formality. At max level 80 in The War Within expansion, all Outland content is soloable without any trouble, so Mag'har reputation is farmed much faster on a leveled character than during your first run through the expansion.
How to Get It: Step-by-Step
Step 1. Raise reputation to Neutral in Hellfire
The Horde starts with the Mag'har at Unfriendly, and direct farming is unavailable. You need to raise reputation to Neutral through the starting quest chain.
- Fly to Thrallmar (Hellfire Peninsula)
- Pick up the quest The Mag'har and follow the chain
- The chain leads you to a small Mag'har camp north of Hellfire Citadel and grants your first reputation points, opening access to the quests in Nagrand
Step 2. Fly to Garadar
Garadar is located in the northern part of Nagrand. The nearest flight point becomes available after you discover the local flight master. Provisioner Nasela stands by a hut with a reddish roof in the western part of the settlement, next to a cobalt war talbuk.
Step 3. Complete every quest in Garadar
The main reputation gain from Neutral to Honored comes from the one-time quest chain in and around Garadar. Pick up all available tasks from the orcs in the settlement and run them back to back — they are logically linked and cover most of the Nagrand map.
Step 4. Farm Warmaul ogres and Bleeding Hollow cultists
Once the one-time quests run out, the remaining reputation is most conveniently topped off by killing mobs. Each Warmaul ogre or Bleeding Hollow cultist you kill grants +10 reputation with the Mag'har, and the farm is not capped by quantity.
Main farming locations:
- Warmaul Hill — the densest cluster of ogres in Nagrand
- Laughing Skull Ruins — ogre mages and warriors
- Burning Blade Ruins — Bleeding Hollow cultists
- The Northern Spire and Southern Spire of the Halaa basin — a source of
Obsidian Warbeads
Step 5. Turn in Obsidian Warbeads
At Friendly standing, the quest Proving Your Strength from Warden Bullrok in Garadar becomes available, and it quickly turns into the repeatable More Warbeads!. Turning in 10
Obsidian Warbeads grants +500 reputation per cycle. The warbeads drop from ogres, so the quest combines perfectly with regular mob farming.
Step 6. Buy the mount
Once you reach Exalted, return to Garadar and buy the
Reins of the Cobalt Riding Talbuk from Provisioner Nasela for 70 gold. Use the item to add the mount to your collection.
Provisioner Nasela's Full Talbuk Lineup
At Exalted, Nasela unlocks eight talbuks: four riding (+60% speed) and four war (+100% speed). We recommend deciding right away which models you want and planning your budget.
| Mount | Type | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Riding | 70 gold | |
| Riding | 70 gold | |
| Riding | 70 gold | |
| Riding | 70 gold | |
| War | 100 gold | |
| War | 100 gold | |
| War | 100 gold | |
| War | 100 gold |
The full collection of all eight talbuks costs 680 gold. The war models grant +100% speed, so if you have learned
Journeyman Riding they are more useful in the field; the riding ones are flashier and suit low-key trips through low-level zones.
Differences from the Alliance Version
The Horde and Alliance versions are mirror entries of the same mount, stored in the database as separate items.
| Parameter | Horde | Alliance |
|---|---|---|
| Vendor faction | Mag'har | Kurenai |
| Vendor | Provisioner Nasela | Trader Narasu |
| Settlement | Garadar, Nagrand | Telaar, Nagrand |
| Visual model | Identical | Identical |
If you have characters on both factions, the mounts are purchased independently and are not shared across the account between opposing factions: the Alliance needs Kurenai, the Horde needs the Mag'har.
Optimizing Reputation Farming
One-evening route (the fast option)
At level 80, farming Exalted from Neutral usually takes 4–8 hours of pure time if you do not use boosters. The optimal sequence:
- Complete the "The Assassin" chain in Hellfire — +500 toward Neutral
- Clear all one-time quests in Garadar and the surrounding areas — this brings reputation up to Honored
- At the same time, collect
Obsidian Warbeads from killing ogres - After Friendly, start turning in stacks of 10 warbeads — each turn-in speeds up your progress by +500
- Grind the final tiers up to Exalted by farming ogres on Warmaul Hill
Choosing a specialization
For farming ogres, classes with good wave clear are best:
- Retribution Paladin — fast AoE kills and self-healing
- Fire/Frost Mage — the classic mass-farming setup
- Demon Hunter — high pace and mobility
- Blood Death Knight — for steady, risk-free farming
Tips
Don't rush to buy every model at once — buying the mount costs 70 gold, but the
Journeyman Riding skill turns the riding talbuks into "decorative" mounts. If you don't have it, earn it first.
Combine with Nagrand achievements — while you farm reputation, you complete quests for Explore Nagrand and other Outland achievements.
Warbeads pile up even when you don't need the reputation — start collecting them from the very first ogres so that by Friendly you already have a ready stockpile for quick turn-ins.
A second account via Kurenai — if you have an Alliance character at level 40+, you can simultaneously unlock the same cobalt talbuk from Trader Narasu in Telaar. Both collections count toward your account's total mount counter.
The mount is account-wide once obtained — after you use the
Reins of the Cobalt Riding Talbuk, it appears in the collection of every Horde character on the account.
