Overview

Rough Wooden Staff

Game iconRough Wooden Staff is a grey-quality two-handed staff built on the most basic wooden model in the game. It is a textbook starter weapon: item level 6, required level 3, dealing token damage and selling back to a vendor for just 7 copper. There are no stats, bonuses or lore behind it — visually it is a smooth, unpainted stick with a slight thickening at the head, free of runes, crystals and metal fittings.

That deliberate simplicity is exactly what makes the staff interesting for transmogrification. When you need a truly minimalist silhouette — for a wanderer, a novice, a beggarly hermit or a wild-leaning druid — ornate staves with blazing heads only get in the way. The Rough Wooden Staff gives you a clean wooden shape without a single extra detail.

The item has been in the game since launch and belongs to the classic set of the simplest weapons handed out and sold to low-level characters.

Source

The main way to get the Rough Wooden Staff is to buy it from vendors. It is part of the standard stock of weapon and general goods merchants and appears in most starting areas and major cities of both factions: Stormwind, Orgrimmar, Ironforge, Darnassus, Undercity, Thunder Bluff, Silvermoon.

  • The purchase price is symbolic — a few copper coins, available from the very first minutes of play.
  • There is no bind on purchase: the staff only binds when equipped, so an alt can buy it and mail it to the character who needs it.
  • Besides vendors, the item occasionally drops from low-level enemies in starting zones, but you should not rely on that for transmog — buying is faster.

To unlock the appearance for your transmogrification wardrobe, you only need to equip the staff once on a suitable class — a mage, warlock, priest, druid, shaman or monk. After that the look is saved in your collection forever, and the item itself can be sold.

Who It Suits Visually

  • Wanderer and hermit looks: bare unpainted wood pairs well with cloth sets in muted earthy tones.
  • A wild or nature-leaning druid concept: a staff without metal or crystals reads as a simple branch or walking stick.
  • Minimalist priest or monk builds where the armor is the focus and the weapon should stay unobtrusive.
  • Roleplay looks for a beggar, a novice or a fledgling mage apprentice without access to a "real" magical weapon.
  • Contrast builds: a deliberately poor staff next to expensive armor highlights the contrast — a debatable but expressive trick.

Tips

1

Buy the staff from the nearest weapon or general goods vendor in any starting city — there is no need to hunt down a specific merchant.

2

Unlock the appearance on a character that can wield staves, otherwise the item will not be added to your transmogrification collection.

3

After unlocking the look, you can sell the item back to the same vendor — the appearance stays in your wardrobe forever.

4

If several characters need the look, remember: the transmogrification collection is account-wide, so there is no need to unlock it again.

5

For a complete "poor wanderer" theme, pair the staff with simple grey and brown cloth pieces — expensive sets will break the image.

6

Do not overpay at the auction house: the staff is always cheaper to buy directly from a vendor than from resellers.

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
