Russet Ruinstrider
Overview

Russet Ruinstrider is a ground mount added to World of Warcraft in the Legion expansion (patch 7.3.0 "Shadows of Argus," August 29, 2017). It is a russet-colored battle talbuk covered in chitinous plates — according to the lore, the talbuks of Argus evolved to grow tough armor in order to survive the endless war on the ruined planet.
The mount is sold by the quartermaster of the Argussian Reach faction for 10,000 gold. To buy it you need Exalted standing with this faction. The same vendor sells six ruinstriders of different colors in total — they differ only in coloring, while their model and stats are identical.
Why you want this mount
- Collection value — one of the six Argussian Reach ruinstriders. By collecting all six, you progress toward the mount-count meta-achievements and earn collector bonuses
- Unique talbuk model — Argussian ruinstriders differ from Draenor talbuks with their massive chitinous armor and demonic horns. No other ground mount has this model
- Speed on par with the best ground mounts — +60% or +100% movement speed depending on your riding skill. It rides just as fast as any other ground transport
- Available account-wide — once purchased, the mount unlocks for every character on your account regardless of faction and class
- Part of the path to progressing through Argus — the path to the mount runs through the entire patch 7.3 storyline. Along the way you will also unlock the Lightforged Draenei allied race and earn Argus achievements
Requirements and prerequisites
To reach the quartermaster and purchase the mount, you will need:
- Character level: formally level 10 to use the mount, but the Argus campaign in the current patch scales the storyline to any level
- Argus unlocked: you need to complete the introductory Legion quest chain on the Broken Isles and receive the quest from Velen
- The Vindicaar ship: the garrison ship activates automatically when you start the patch 7.3 storyline
- Progress through the Argus zones: world quests open up gradually as you complete the story chapters
How to reach the quartermaster
The vendor is located on the upper deck of the Vindicaar — the flying draenei ship hovering above Argus.
- Open the Argus map and select the Vindicaar
- Use a portal or flight master to the ship. If the ship is not yet available, complete the introductory patch 7.3 story quest
- Climb to the upper deck of the Vindicaar
- Find Toraan the Revered — coordinates are roughly 68, 56 on the ship's interior map
Step-by-step acquisition guide
1. Unlock Argus and the Vindicaar
If you have not been to Argus yet, start by meeting Velen in Dalaran. He gives a quest that launches the patch 7.3 campaign. The first chapter takes you to Krokuun — the starting zone of Argus.
2. Complete the first story chapters
Reputation with the Argussian Reach opens up gradually:
- Krokuun — complete the chapter The Child of Light and Shadow. This opens part of the world quests in Krokuun
- Mac'Aree — complete the chapter The Waning Crescent. This opens world quests in Mac'Aree
- Antoran Wastes — complete the chapter The Burning Heart. This grants access to the final weekly quests
Completing all three chapters takes several hours depending on your pace.
3. Gain reputation with the Argussian Reach
The main sources of reputation:
| Source | Reputation amount | Note |
|---|---|---|
| World quest in Krokuun or Mac'Aree | 75 | Rotate daily, 5–10 per day |
| Weekly quest Fuel for the Doomed World | 250 | Requires gathering nethershards on Argus |
| Weekly quest for the Seat of the Triumvirate dungeon | 250 | For defeating L'ura |
| Argussian Reach Insignia | 75 | Reward from advisory table tasks |
| Greater Argussian Reach Insignia | 750 | Rare reward from the advisory table |
4. Buy the mount from Toraan
Once you have Exalted standing with the Argussian Reach and 10,000 gold, head up to the Vindicaar, open Toraan's trade window, and buy the
Reins of the Russet Ruinstrider. The mount goes straight into your collection.
Optimizing reputation farming
Priority order of actions
- On reset day, complete the weekly quests Fuel for the Doomed World and the Seat of the Triumvirate quest — that is a guaranteed 500 reputation
- Open the Argus map and pick up all available Argussian Reach world quests. Each gives 75 reputation (or 150 with an addon and bonus)
- Use the accumulated
Insignia from the advisory table — they are stored in your bags and grant reputation instantly - Check "Paragon" — after Exalted, every 10,000 points grants a chest with a chance at unique rewards
Class tips
- Best classes for farming on Argus — demon hunter and monk thanks to their high mobility and fast cross-zone movement
- Tanks and melee of any class clear tasks quickly, since Argus enemies are formally level 110 and at level 90 of the current patch are killed in 1–2 hits
- To gather resources from tasks, use the Krokul Flute — it speeds up movement between Argus points
Approximate time to obtain
Getting from zero to Exalted with the Argussian Reach takes roughly 2–3 weeks of daily play while completing all world quests and weeklies. Playing less often takes one and a half to two months. On leveled characters with zones already unlocked, reputation comes faster thanks to access to all world quests at once.
Tips
Don't skip the weeklies — 500 reputation for two quests is almost 7 world quests. A missed week noticeably drags out the farm
Stockpile insignia — the advisory table tasks on the Vindicaar sometimes give rare "greater insignia" worth 750 reputation. Don't open the regular insignia right away; hold a stack for reputation bonus events
Watch for bonus events — World of Warcraft regularly runs "Legion Assault" weeks and similar events with +50% reputation with Legion factions. It is best to plan your main farm around them
Take Army of the Light quests in parallel — Argus world quests often grant reputation with both factions at once. The path to the mount conveniently pairs with unlocking the Lightforged Draenei allied race
Check the other colors before buying — open the vendor window and look at all the variants in the preview. You may want to buy a different color from the same line first
The mount is account-wide once obtained — as soon as one character gets the
Reins of the Russet Ruinstrider, it appears in the collection of all your characters. You only need to grind the reputation and gold once
