Overview

Scarlet Pterrordax

Game iconScarlet Pterrordax is a free flying mount for the Horde faction, added to World of Warcraft in patch 10.1.5 "Fractures in Time" of the Dragonflight expansion (July 11, 2023). The mount is a bright scarlet pterrodax with massive membranous wings and a distinctive crest — the model harks back to the Zandalari flying lizards from Battle for Azeroth, but in a new fiery-red coloration.

It is awarded for the quest Let's Fly!, which is given automatically to a Horde character upon reaching level 30 and entering Zuldazar. This mount became part of a sweeping overhaul of the flying system: since patch 10.1.5, riding skills are learned automatically and for free, and a flying mount is granted to every player right in the game, with no need to pay a trainer in gold.

Why You Want This Mount

  • Completely free — requires no gold, reputation, raids, or Mythic+. Just bring a Horde character to level 30 and enter Dazar'alor
  • Unique coloration — the bright scarlet hue with dark wings stands out among other pterrodaxes and is available only through this reward
  • A full-fledged flying mount — supports normal flight at +150% or +310% speed, and once you learn Dragonriding it can be used in dragonriding mode in modern zones
  • Perfect for a new character — lets you fly right after level 30, which greatly speeds up working through older expansions (Cataclysm, Mists of Pandaria, Warlords of Draenor, Legion, Battle for Azeroth)
  • Reduced farming time — lets you travel quickly across zones with old daily quests, reputations, and treasure chests
  • Exclusive to the Horde — adds a rare mount to your collection that is unavailable to Alliance players

How to Obtain

Any Horde character level 30 or higher can obtain the mount. If you created a new character and leveled it to 30, the quest should arrive automatically. On existing characters the quest is triggered on your first visit to Dazar'alor after installing patch 10.1.5.

  1. Bring a Horde character to level 30. Since patch 10.1.5, Apprentice Riding is learned automatically at level 10, and Journeyman Riding (flying) at level 30
  2. Open the quest window: the quest Let's Fly! should appear automatically. If it does not — head to Dazar'alor via the portal in Orgrimmar
  3. Find Beast Handler Kalatak by the Royal Armory in Dazar'alor. The NPC stands next to the stable and the animals
  4. Speak with him and finish the short conversation — he will hand you the reins
  5. Receive the Game iconReins of the Scarlet Pterrordax and use them to add the mount to your collection

Zuldazar: The Road to Kalatak

Dazar'alor is the capital of the Zandalari empire, opened to the Horde as a stronghold back in Battle for Azeroth. Kalatak stands at the entrance to the Royal Armory on the lower terraces of the city.

  1. Use the portal to Dazar'alor from Orgrimmar (Hall of the Brave) or fly there on your own if you already have a ground mount
  2. After arriving, head toward the center of Dazar'alor
  3. Descend to the lower terraces — near the Royal Armory and the stables you will see Beast Handler Kalatak with a quest symbol above his head
  4. If the quest is not highlighted on the map, check your quest log — it may have been added automatically earlier

Possible Issues

  • The quest does not appear — make sure the character is at least level 30 and that you entered Dazar'alor directly. Sometimes logging out and back in helps
  • Dazar'alor is not displayed — check that you have completed the Battle for Azeroth starting chain (at least the introductory quest in Zandalar). On new characters using Chromie Time you may need to manually select BfA via Chromie
  • No portal from Orgrimmar — the portal opens after completing The Horde's Call, the starting BfA quest for the Horde

Flying After Patch 10.1.5

With the release of The War Within (11.0) and later in patch 11.1, the dragonriding system was extended to nearly all flying mounts, including the Game iconReins of the Scarlet Pterrordax.

  • Normal flight — the standard mode, available right after obtaining the mount. Supports free soaring and hovering
  • Dragonriding — toggled in mid-air by pressing a special key. In this mode the mount gains energy charges, dive momentum, and steep aerial tricks. It activates only in zones where dragonriding is permitted
  • Switching modes — to change mode, use the option in the mount collection menu or the assigned key. Each mount can be configured individually

Tips

1

Grab the mount right after level 30 — this will save dozens of hours of leveling in old expansions, especially if you plan to complete the Pathfinder achievements and gather treasures in the zones of Pandaria, Draenor, Legion, and BfA

2

Use the mount for quests — most "Explorer" achievements for old expansions are now available without lengthy reputation grinds. Flying speeds up farming exploration achievements and treasures

3

Combine it with dragonriding mode — if you are farming content in modern zones, switch the mount to high-speed dragonriding mode: diving from a height lets you cover great distances in seconds

4

Do not throw away the reins — the item binds on pickup and is removed from your inventory after learning it. If you accidentally deleted it before use, contact Blizzard support or repeat the quest
