Shadowmourne — Transmog Set Guide
Overview

Shadowmourne is a legendary two-handed axe forged from shards of Frostmourne — the sword of the Lich King. The weapon was introduced to World of Warcraft in the Wrath of the Lich King expansion alongside the Icecrown Citadel raid, and to this day it remains one of the most recognizable legendary items in the game's history.
The massive axe is rendered in black-and-blue tones with distinct light effects of dark magic. Its signature mechanic is gathering soul fragments from melee attacks, after which the weapon unleashes a Chaos curse upon enemies. This visual effect makes the transmog especially striking in combat.
The item is available for transmogrification to warriors, paladins, and death knights. You must obtain the item itself by completing a quest chain.
Source
Shadowmourne is created through a quest chain that begins inside the Icecrown Citadel raid. The chain requires several weeks of weekly raid runs on the highest difficulty, 25-player Heroic.
Requirements
- Friendly reputation with the Ashen Verdict faction.
- Class: warrior, paladin, or death knight.
You can earn reputation with the Ashen Verdict by killing enemies and bosses in Icecrown Citadel on 25-player difficulty.
Quest Chain Steps
The first quest is given by Highlord Darion Mograine at the entrance to Icecrown Citadel once you reach Friendly reputation with the Ashen Verdict. The task requires gathering four components for the rune forge:
- Light's Vengeance — Arthas's hammer, lying in the Cave of Frostmourne in Dragonblight.
- 25 units of
Primordial Saronite — purchased from vendors in Northrend or farmed in Icecrown Citadel. - Blood of Rotface and Blood of Festergut — drop from the bosses Rotface and Festergut only on 25-player difficulty.
As a result, you receive the quest reward
Shadow's Edge: a high-level two-handed axe that you will have to "feed" with souls.
This quest binds Shadow's Edge to you.
With Shadow's Edge in hand, you must kill 1000 enemies inside Icecrown Citadel. Only kills made while the weapon is equipped count. A full raid clear yields about 400–500 souls, so it will take two or three clears.
4. Infusion quests (three infusions)
After the feast of souls come three sequential quests:
- Unholy Infusion: during the fight with Professor Putricide, you must transform into an Abomination and absorb ooze with the weapon.
- Blood Infusion: during the fight with Blood-Queen Lana'thel — requires at least two players to execute the bite mechanic.
- Frost Infusion: you must survive four of Sindragosa's breaths while keeping the weapon equipped.
Gather 50 Shadowfrost Shards from Icecrown Citadel bosses on 25-player difficulty. The shards do not drop from every kill, so this stage takes four to six weeks.
The final quest from Highlord Darion Mograine: turn in Shadow's Edge and receive Shadowmourne in return.
Additional Rewards
After your first kill of the Lich King with Shadowmourne in hand, a sealed chest drops from him. Bring it to Highlord Darion Mograine, and he will open the
Unsealed Chest, which contains valuable items:
Reins of the Crimson Deathcharger — a mount.
Muradin's Favor — a toy that turns you into a Frost Dwarf for 10 minutes.
Jaina's Locket — creates a portal to Dalaran (1-hour cooldown).
Tabard of the Lightbringer — a tabard that fills the wearer with the Light of Holiness.
Sylvanas' Music Box — a toy that summons two of Sylvanas's mourners.
Alternatives / Recolors
Shadowmourne has a unique model with no recolors. Among Wrath of the Lich King two-handed axes, there are thematically similar dark variants:
| Item | Source |
|---|---|
| Intermediate reward of the same quest chain — an almost identical model |
Shadow's Edge is the direct predecessor of Shadowmourne and visually differs only in the absence of legendary-quality effects. If you want to try out the silhouette without completing the full chain, Shadow's Edge is the closest alternative.
Who It Suits Visually
- Suits dark death knight plate sets — the dark blue and black color scheme blends naturally with most death tier sets from ICC and Siege of Orgrimmar.
- Harmonizes with the purple-and-blue "Sanctified" paladin sets from Trial of the Crusader and Icecrown Citadel.
- Contrasts with warm golden warrior sets — the black metal with its cold glow creates a sharp contrast that some players use deliberately.
- Fits well into "necromantic" transmog looks themed around Northrend and the undead.
- Suits sets with dark blue details and a dominant black armor color.
Tips
The longest stage is collecting 50 Shadowfrost Shards. Reset every week and run Icecrown Citadel on 25-player Heroic difficulty — this maximizes your chance of getting shards from each boss killed.
The Blood Infusion stage requires at least two players because of Blood-Queen Lana'thel's bite mechanic. Arrange it with a friend or find a partner for this specific task.
The raid can be cleared at level 90 in solo mode for most stages, except the Blood Infusion.
Primordial Saronite can be bought at the auction house or farmed from bosses and vendors in Northrend — this speeds up the first quest in the chain.
After completing the entire chain, Shadowmourne is added to your transmogrification collection permanently, account-wide (within the eligible classes).
Keep track of the weekly raid reset: Icecrown Citadel has separate difficulty locks for 10-player and 25-player.
During the "A Feast of Souls" stage, it is most convenient to farm at the raid entrance in the first hall, where there are dense groups of enemies.
