Overview

Silver Riding Nether Ray

Game iconSilver Riding Nether Ray is an epic flying mount from The Burning Crusade expansion (patch 2.1). The ray features a pale silvery coloring with a metallic sheen on its wings. Among the five available nether ray variants, the silver one is considered one of the most elegant thanks to its muted yet expressive coloring.

Nether rays are unique mounts from Outland whose model is not used for any other mount in the game. This makes them truly collectible means of transportation.

Why You Want This Mount

  • Unique model. Riding nether rays are the only mounts in the game with a ray model. No other mount uses this model, making them visually one of a kind
  • Five color variants. In addition to the purple one, four more colors are available: Game icongreen, Game iconred, Game iconblue, and Game iconpurple. All five can be purchased at once upon reaching Exalted
  • The "Skadi the Ruthless" — Skettis Nests achievement. Upon reaching Exalted with the Sha'tari Skyguard, you'll earn the matching achievement
  • Ground and flying mode. The mount works both on the ground and in the air. As of patch 5.4.0, nether rays can also swim
  • Account-wide. Once purchased, the mount becomes available to all characters on your account

How to Reach Skettis

Skettis is an arakkoa lair located in the southeastern part of Terokkar Forest in Outland. The Sha'tari Skyguard camp is on the Blackwind Landing platform to the north of Skettis.

  1. Travel to Shattrath via a portal from any capital city
  2. From Shattrath, fly southeast into Terokkar Forest
  3. Blackwind Landing is at coordinates 64.2, 66.2 — it's a floating platform reachable only with a flying mount

How to Begin Grinding Reputation

You start at Indifferent with the Sha'tari Skyguard. To purchase the mounts, you need to gain 42,000 reputation points to reach Exalted.

Starting Quests

Go to Yuula near the flight master in Shattrath and pick up the quest "Threat From Above." This quest chain leads you to Skettis and unlocks access to daily quests.

It's also recommended to start the Ogri'la quest chain in Blade's Edge Mountains — it unlocks additional daily quests that grant reputation with the Skyguard as well.

Ways to Gain Reputation

Daily Quests (up to 1,350 reputation per day)

Two daily quests are available in Skettis:

Quest Reputation Description
Fires Over Skettis 250 Drop bombs on arakkoa eggs while flying on a mount
Escape from Skettis 250 Escort a prisoner to a safe zone

Additionally, if you've unlocked the Ogri'la quests in Blade's Edge Mountains:

Quest Reputation Description
Bombing Run 500 Kill elementals near Ogri'la
Wrangle More Aether Rays! 350 Catch nether rays using bait

Total: up to 1,350 reputation per day from quests alone.

Farming Shadow Dust (repeatable quest)

By killing arakkoa and kaliri in Skettis, you collect Game iconShadow Dust. Every 6 units of Shadow Dust can be turned in for the quest "More Shadow Dust" for 150 reputation. This is a repeatable quest with no daily turn-in limit.

In addition, turning in the dust grants you an Game iconElixir of Shadows, which for 20 minutes lets you see ghostly arakkoa — these drop Time-Lost Scrolls.

Summoning Mini-Bosses and Terokk (advanced farming)

This is the fastest way to gain reputation:

  1. Use the Elixir of Shadows and kill ghostly arakkoa in Skettis
  2. Collect Game iconTime-Lost Scrolls — 10 are needed to summon a mini-boss at one of the skull piles
  3. For killing each mini-boss you receive 100 reputation and the quest "Blood-Sworn Enemies," which grants another 350 reputation (for 4 mini-bosses = 400 + 350 = 750 reputation)
  4. After killing all four mini-bosses, you receive a Game iconTime-Lost Offering, which can be used to summon Terokk — an elite boss
  5. For killing Terokk you receive 500 reputation

By repeating this cycle, you can gain around 2,000 reputation per hour.

Killing Regular Mobs

Arakkoa and kaliri in Skettis grant 10 reputation each. This is the least efficient method, but reputation accumulates alongside Shadow Dust farming.

Optimal Grinding Strategy

The Fast Path (1–2 days)

If you want to get the mount as soon as possible:

  1. Complete all the introductory quests in Skettis and Ogri'la — this gives several thousand reputation
  2. Focus on farming Shadow Dust and summoning mini-bosses
  3. Repeat the cycle: kill mobs → turn in dust → Elixir of Shadows → ghostly arakkoa → scrolls → mini-bosses → Terokk
  4. At a rate of ~2,000 reputation per hour, you'll need roughly 13–15 hours of pure farming

The Relaxed Path (30–37 days)

If you're in no hurry:

  1. Complete all available daily quests every day (1,350 reputation)
  2. Optionally supplement with Shadow Dust farming
  3. Over 30–37 days you'll reach Exalted

Buying Shadow Dust at the Auction House

Shadow Dust can be bought at the Auction House if you don't want to farm mobs yourself. This lets you significantly speed up the process by simply turning in the "More Shadow Dust" quest over and over.

Purchasing the Mount

After reaching Exalted, head to Grella at Blackwind Landing:

Grella also sells:

Tips

1

Buy Shadow Dust at the Auction House. If gold isn't a problem for you, buy up the dust at the Auction House and simply turn in the repeatable quest. This saves a significant amount of time

2

Don't forget about Ogri'la. The Ogri'la quest chain in Blade's Edge Mountains unlocks two additional daily quests that grant Skyguard reputation. Start it in parallel

3

All five rays at once. Upon reaching Exalted, you can buy all five color variants at once. The total cost is 800 gold (with the discount)

4

The rays can swim. As of patch 5.4.0, riding nether rays gained the ability to swim, making them more versatile

5

The Elixir of Shadows lasts 20 minutes. Plan your ghostly arakkoa farming to make the most of the elixir's duration

6

Terokk is an elite boss. At high levels he poses no threat, but remember that summoning him requires killing the four mini-bosses first
