Sky Golem — How to Get the Engineering Mount

Sky Golem is a crafted flying mount created by Engineers back in Mists of Pandaria. The main feature of this mount is the ability to gather herbs without dismounting. For herbalists, it is one of the most convenient means of transportation in the game, and for engineers, it is a steady source of income on the Auction House.

The mount is not soulbound when crafted: it can be sold on the Auction House or traded to another player. Anyone can use the Sky Golem — the Engineering profession is only required for crafting.

• Herb gathering while mounted — you can pick herbs without dismounting. This saves time when farming herbalism in old zones and previous expansion areas
• Flying and ground mount — speed depends on the character's riding skill (up to +310% in flight)
• No profession required to use — only an engineer can craft it, but any character can ride it
• Tradeable on the Auction House — one of the few mounts that can be purchased with gold from other players

Important: starting with The War Within and Midnight, the Sky Golem's ability to gather herbs while mounted does not work with herbs from the current expansion. To gather herbs in current zones, you will need to invest knowledge points in the Botany specialization of the Herbalism profession. However, in zones from older expansions, the mount still allows herb gathering on the fly.

To use the mount, no profession is needed — you can simply buy a finished mount on the Auction House.

The Sky Golem recipe is contained in Chief Engineer Jard's Journal, which drops randomly from any mob in Pandaria. The condition is that your character must have Pandaria Engineering at maximum level (75/75).

The journal teaches several recipes at once:

• Sky Golem — flying mount
• Jard's Peculiar Energy Source — key crafting component
• Pierre — battle pet
• Rascal-Bot — battle pet

To obtain the journal, head to Pandaria and kill any mobs — the drop is random, and the journal usually drops within 20–50 kills.

If you don't have Pandaria Engineering yet or it isn't leveled to 75, here is a quick guide:

1. Learn the profession — visit a Pandaria Engineering trainer. Trainers can be found in the Jade Forest and Valley of the Four Winds
2. Buy materials — leveling from 1 to 75 requires about 400 Ghost Iron Bars (Ghost Iron Bar). Each bar is smelted from 2 Ghost Iron Ore
3. Craft trainer recipes — all leveling recipes are learned from the trainer; the process takes 15–30 minutes with materials on hand

Pandaria can be visited from level 10, so the entry threshold is minimal.

Two main components are needed to create one Sky Golem:

Jard's Peculiar Energy Source (30 pieces)

This component is the main time bottleneck. You can only craft one energy source per day, so the entire process takes exactly 30 days.

Living Steel (30 pieces)

Living Steel is a material created by alchemists or purchased on the Auction House. There are three ways to obtain it:

If you don't have an alchemist, the easiest option is to buy Living Steel on the Auction House. The price varies by server, but 30 bars usually cost a few thousand gold.

Additionally, for leveling engineering — about 400 more Ghost Iron Bars.

Step 1. Prepare Your Profession

Learn Pandaria Engineering and level it to 75/75. If you already have the profession — move to the next step.

Step 2. Get the Recipe

Head to Pandaria and kill mobs until Chief Engineer Jard's Journal drops. Convenient farming spots include the Valley of the Four Winds or the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, where mobs are densely packed.

Step 3. Start Daily Crafting

Every day, craft one Jard's Peculiar Energy Source. This requires 10 Ghost Iron Bars per craft. Don't skip days — each missed day pushes back the mount's completion.

Step 4. Stockpile Living Steel

While the 30 days of daily crafting progress, prepare 30 units of Living Steel. Options:

• Buy on the Auction House — the fastest method
• Create through an alchemist (your own or a friend's) — cheaper but slower
• Combine both methods

Step 5. Assemble the Mount

Once you have 30 energy sources and 30 Living Steel — open the profession window and craft the Sky Golem. The mount will appear in your bags — use it to add it to your collection.

The Sky Golem is one of the few mounts available on the Auction House. If you don't want to spend 30 days crafting, you can simply buy it.

Prices vary greatly depending on the server and timing. On high-population servers, competition is higher and prices are lower.

Farming on Alts

The Sky Golem is an excellent way to earn gold. The strategy is simple:

1. Create several alts (level 10 is sufficient)
2. Learn Pandaria Engineering on each and level to 75
3. Get the recipe on each alt
4. Craft one energy source on each character daily
5. Every 30 days — one finished mount from each alt

With 5 alts, that's 5 mounts per month. At an average price of 30,000 gold — that's 150,000 gold monthly with minimal time investment (5–10 minutes per day across all characters).

Where to Farm Ghost Iron Ore

Ghost Iron Ore is mined in any Pandaria zone. Best routes:

• Valley of the Four Winds — flat terrain, ore spawns frequently
• The Jade Forest — many ore clusters along the mountains
• Dread Wastes — less competition from other players

Alternatively, ore and bars can be bought on the Auction House — often more time-efficient.

• Don't forget daily crafting. Jard's Peculiar Energy Sources cannot be crafted in bulk — only one per day. Miss a day — lose a day
• You don't have to craft Living Steel yourself. Buying on the Auction House is usually cheaper than gathering all materials manually
• The mount does not use mount equipment. The Sky Golem is incompatible with mount equipment items because it already has a built-in herb gathering ability
• Check prices before selling. On some servers, it's more profitable to sell on weekends when there are more buyers
• The recipe is learned once. After studying Jard's Journal, you can craft the Sky Golem an unlimited number of times (subject to daily component limits)
