Overview

Reins of the Slate Primordial Direhorn

Game iconReins of the Slate Primordial Direhorn is an epic ground mount added in patch 5.2 of the Mists of Pandaria expansion. Direhorns are massive lizard-like creatures bred by the Zandalari trolls as war mounts. The slate coloration is distinguished by a characteristic gray-blue scale tint and blue eyes.

The mount drops from the rare elite enemy Zandalari Warbringer, which spawns in several zones of Pandaria. It is also available on the Black Market with a starting bid of 20,000 gold. It binds when picked up and is available to all characters on the account.

Why you want this mount

  • Rarity — the drop chance is around 5%, and the Zandalari Warbringer itself is a rare enemy with a long respawn timer. The mount is uncommon among players
  • Unique model — the primordial direhorn has an imposing size and a detailed model. The slate coloration stands out among the three color variants (slate, jade, amber)
  • Available to all characters — once learned, the mount appears in the collection of every character on your account
  • Ground mount — movement speed depends on your riding skill and is +60% or +100%
  • Collector's value — it is one of the three direhorn mounts from Mists of Pandaria that remain coveted by collectors to this day

How to obtain

There are three ways to obtain this mount.

Method 1: Farming the Zandalari Warbringer (main)

The Zandalari Warbringer is a rare elite NPC of level 35 that spawns in five zones of Pandaria. Each Warbringer rides a direhorn of a specific color (slate, jade or amber), and the color of the dropped mount always matches the color of the NPC's mount.

  1. Head to one of the Warbringer spawn zones (coordinates below)
  2. Wait for the NPC to spawn on a gray-blue (slate) direhorn with blue eyes
  3. Kill it and check the loot
  4. Repeat until you get the mount

Method 2: The Black Market

The Reins of the Slate Primordial Direhorn is periodically listed on the Black Market by the vendor Madam Goya. The starting bid is 20,000 gold, but the final price on popular realms can reach the gold cap. The lot appears on the Black Market randomly, and there is no way to guarantee its availability.

Method 3: Pandaria Remix (limited event)

During the WoW Remix: Mists of Pandaria event, the mount was sold by the vendor Hemet Nesingwary XVII for 18,700 Bronze. The event has now ended, and it is unknown whether it will be repeated.

Zandalari Warbringer spawn locations

The Zandalari Warbringer spawns at five points along the coasts of Pandaria. The respawn timer is 30 to 60 minutes for each location independently.

Zone Coordinates
Jade Forest 52.7, 19.0
Krasarang Wilds 39.1, 67.1
Kun-Lai Summit 75.1, 67.7
Townlong Steppes 36.5, 85.7
Dread Wastes 47.5, 61.3

Optimizing the farm

Farm route

The Zandalari Warbringer spawns at each of the five locations independently of the others. The optimal strategy is to fly around all five points in a circle, checking for the NPC.

  1. Start in the Jade Forest — it is the first zone you arrive in when flying to Pandaria
  2. Move south to the Krasarang Wilds
  3. Head north to the Kun-Lai Summit
  4. Move west to the Townlong Steppes
  5. Finish the loop in the Dread Wastes
  6. Return to the start of the route

How to determine the direhorn's color

The color of the mount the Warbringer rides determines which item can drop:

  • Slate — gray-blue scales, blue eyes and tongue. This is exactly the variant you need
  • Jade — green scales, green eyes
  • Amber — orange-yellow scales, yellow eyes

The color is determined randomly with each spawn of the NPC. If the Warbringer rides a direhorn of the wrong color, you can still kill it for other rewards (reputation tokens, loot bags), but there will be no chance for a slate direhorn from this particular NPC.

Using multiple characters

The farm has no weekly limit — you can kill Warbringers on any number of characters without restriction. Use alternate characters to patrol different locations simultaneously.

Addons

Install the SilverDragon or NPCScan addon for automatic notification when rare enemies spawn. These addons signal with an audio and visual notification when you enter the detection range of the Zandalari Warbringer.

Group farming

With the personal loot system, each member of the group (up to 5 people) gets an independent chance at the mount. Form a group and spread out across different locations, inviting the others when a Warbringer of the right color is found.

Tips

1

Kill at max level — at level 90 (Midnight) the Zandalari Warbringer is destroyed in seconds. Don't waste time leveling alts for this purpose

2

Check the Black Market regularly — if you have enough gold, keep an eye on the Black Market lots. This can save hours of farming, although the final price is often high

3

Farm during off-peak hours — early in the morning or late at night, competition for rare NPCs is significantly lower. On large realms during peak hours, Warbringers are killed almost instantly after spawning

4

Don't confuse it with the Zandalari Warscout — Zandalari Warscout is a different NPC that spawns in the same zones but does not give mounts. The Warscout is weaker and does not ride a direhorn

5

Pay attention to the realm group — Warbringers are shared across connected realms. If your realm is merged with several others, competition will be higher

6

Be ready for combat — even though at max level the Warbringer poses no threat, make sure you can attack quickly upon detection. Use instant attacks to quickly tag the target

7

Patience is the key to success — given the ~5% drop chance, the need for the right direhorn color and the 30 to 60 minute respawn timer, the farm can take a significant amount of time. Combine it with completing world quests or grinding reputation in Pandaria

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
