Get Smoky Direwolf mount
Overview

Smoky Direwolf is an uncommon ground mount added to World of Warcraft in the Warlords of Draenor expansion (patch 6.0.2). It is a massive grey-smoky wolf with thick fur and burning yellow eyes, visually resembling a direwolf from the northern regions of Draenor. The item description references "Game of Thrones": "Legend holds they dwell mostly in the north. Hates weddings."
The mount drops from
Invader's Forgotten Treasure — a weekly reward bag you receive for a gold victory while defending your garrison from an invasion. The wolf can also drop, with a lower chance, from the
Vanquished Conqueror's Trophy Chest, the reward for a platinum rating, and directly from garrison invasion bosses summoned via special items.
Why You Want This Mount
- Speed 10 out of 10 — the mount receives a +60% or +100% movement speed bonus depending on your riding skill, meaning it travels at the maximum speed of ground transport
- Rare wolf model — unlike standard orcish wolves, the direwolf is larger, more powerful and has a unique smoky-grey coloration. It is one of four direwolves you can collect in Draenor
- Nostalgic content — the mount is tied to the Warlords of Draenor garrison system, which remains accessible at max level. A great reason to return to the old expansion and complete your collection
- Account-wide available — once obtained, the mount unlocks for all characters on your account, regardless of faction and class
How to Obtain
The main path to the mount is defending your own garrison from an invasion and earning a gold victory, which rewards Invader's Forgotten Treasure with a chance at the mount.
- Build a garrison of at least level 3 in Shadowmoon Valley (Alliance) or Frostfire Ridge (Horde). This requires completing the Warlords of Draenor storyline
- Wait for an invasion to trigger. Invasions activate after killing a large number of mobs from the Draenor factions (Iron Horde, Botani, Genesaur, ogres, Shadow Council, Shadowmoon Clan). The most reliable method is to complete the daily apexis crystal quest three times in a row in the same zone
- Receive the invasion notification in your garrison report. Take the defense quest from Sergeant Crowler (Alliance) or Sergeant Grimjaw (Horde)
- Destroy as many enemies as possible and complete the objectives that pop up on the screen. A gold victory requires scoring 1,000 points
- Complete the weekly quest Gold Victory and receive Invader's Forgotten Treasure
- Open the bag — with a small chance it will contain the Smoky Direwolf
Garrison Invasion Ratings
The result of defending your garrison is measured by the number of points scored. Rewards depend directly on the rating, so to farm the mount you need to consistently earn gold or platinum.
| Rating | Points | Reward |
|---|---|---|
| Bronze | 300+ | Apexis crystals, gold |
| Silver | 600+ | Increased reward, chance at items |
| Gold | 1,000+ | Invader's Forgotten Treasure, 75 apexis crystals, chance at item level 645 gear |
| Platinum | 1,300+ | Vanquished Conqueror's Trophy Chest, item level 660 gear, boss summoning stones |
Alternative Sources from Invasion Bosses
With a platinum victory, the Vanquished Conqueror's Trophy Chest may yield a summoning item for one of the garrison invasion bosses. Each of these bosses also has a chance to drop the Smoky Direwolf directly. This gives you another additional roll for the mount per week.
- Gaur — summoned via Runed Greatstone
- Teluur — summoned via Oaken Heart
- Commander Dro'gan — summoned via
Iron Horde Bloody Banner - Esteemed Magus Gogg'natog — summoned via
Highmaul Arcane Relic - Mistress Raffia — summoned via
Legion Beacon - Annihilon — summoned via
Void Prison
Note: each character has a weekly loot lock on a single invasion boss. Looting the same boss again in the same week is not possible.
How to Trigger an Invasion
A garrison invasion does not happen randomly — you must provoke it by killing mobs of specific Draenor factions.
- Choose a zone with aggressive mobs of the desired faction: Frostfire Ridge (Iron Horde), Gorgrond (Botani, Genesaur), Nagrand (ogres), Shadowmoon Valley (Shadow Council, Shadowmoon Clan), Tanaan Jungle
- Take the daily apexis crystal quest from the corresponding herald in the garrison
- Complete the quest three times in a row in the same zone. This practically guarantees the invasion will trigger
- Check the garrison report (garrison icon on the map) — when an invasion is active, a new notification will appear
- Return to the garrison and take the defense quest from Sergeant Crowler or Sergeant Grimjaw
Preparing for the Invasion
- Before starting, make sure you have free inventory space and no active debuffs
- Use a specialization with maximum damage — the invasion is rated by how quickly you destroy enemies and complete objectives
- At max level (90 in Midnight) any Draenor invasion can be soloed without difficulty
Farm Optimization
Weekly Cycle
The invasion is a weekly event tied to the game data reset (Wednesday in Europe, Tuesday in North America). A single character can receive one gold or platinum treasure per week, so to speed up the farm, bring in additional characters.
- Trigger the invasion on all available characters with a garrison
- Defend the garrison on each — gold at level 90 is achieved with ease
- Collect Invader's Forgotten Treasure on each character
- Open the bags and check the contents — each bag gives an independent chance at the mount
Multi-Farm on Alts
The Smoky Direwolf is one of the mounts most efficiently farmed through a large number of characters. If you have 5–10 characters with level 3 garrisons, your chances at the mount increase 5–10 times weekly.
- On each character keep 3 pre-accepted apexis crystal quests in one zone
- Activate invasions sequentially: finished one — move to the next
- Use the
Garrison Hearthstone for fast return
Boss Summoning Stones
If you have accumulated summoning stones from platinum victories, use them for additional rolls on the mount. Each garrison invasion boss is an independent source of the Smoky Direwolf.
Tips
Build garrisons in advance — the sooner you set up a level 3 garrison on each alt, the sooner you can add it to the weekly rotation. The garrison also generates income in gold and resources
Don't open bags at low levels — the bag's contents scale, but for gear and gold it's wiser to wait until the character reaches max level
Aim for platinum, not just gold — the platinum rating adds a second reward bag with a chance at the same mount plus a boss summoning stone, which effectively gives up to three rolls per invasion
Check the garrison report on every visit — invasions are active for a limited time. If you miss the window, you'll have to trigger it again
Use the group finder only for invasion bosses — the garrison invasion itself is an instance of your garrison, but when using boss summoning stones you can invite other players to make the fight easier
The mount is account-wide after obtaining — once one character gets the Smoky Direwolf, it appears in the mount collection of all your characters, regardless of faction

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
