Overview

Spectral Gryphon

Game iconSpectral Gryphon is an epic ground and flying mount, first added in patch 4.3.0 of the Cataclysm expansion. It is a semi-transparent gryphon wreathed in a pale spectral glow, with an ethereal tail of mist trailing behind it in flight. The mount is available only to Alliance characters (on Horde characters it is automatically replaced by the Game iconSpectral Wind Rider).

Originally, the Spectral Gryphon was granted to participants of the "Scroll of Resurrection" program, which was discontinued in patch 5.4.7. However, in patch 10.2 Blizzard brought this mount back into the game through the Trading Post system, where it appears periodically in the rotation of goods for Trader's Tender.

Why you want this mount

  • Collector's value — for many years the Spectral Gryphon was considered one of the rarest mounts in the game. The "Scroll of Resurrection" program ran for less than two years, and far from every player managed to claim the reward.
  • Unique model — the semi-transparent spectral gryphon stands out visually from any other mount. The ghostly glow and trail of mist make it noticeable in a crowd.
  • Ground and flying — the mount automatically adapts to your riding skill. On the ground it runs, in the air it spreads its wings and soars.
  • Available to all characters — once obtained, the mount appears in the collection for every character on your account. On Horde characters it turns into the Spectral Wind Rider.
  • Effect with Shadowform — priests in Shadowform become almost invisible on this mount, creating a striking visual trick.

Requirements

Parameter Value
Character level 10
Riding skill Apprentice Riding (ground), Expert Riding (flight)
Faction Alliance (replaced by the Spectral Wind Rider on Horde)
Binding Binds when picked up
Type Ground and flying

How to obtain

The Spectral Gryphon is available through the Trading Post — a system of monthly rotations of cosmetic items for the Trader's Tender currency. The mount appears in the rotation periodically, so it may not be available in the current month.

  1. Make sure you have unlocked the Trading Post. To do this, visit the Trading Post in Stormwind (near the Mage Quarter) or in Orgrimmar
  2. Check the current month's rotation — the Spectral Gryphon does not appear every month. Previously it was available in November 2023 for 650 Trader's Tender and in February 2025 for 500 Trader's Tender
  3. If the mount is in the rotation, save up the required amount of Trader's Tender
  4. Purchase the Game iconSpectral Gryphon from the vendor at the Trading Post
  5. Use the item to learn the mount

Step-by-step Trading Post guide

How the Trading Post works

The Trading Post is a system of monthly offers of cosmetic items. Every month the assortment is refreshed, and some items are available only in certain months. The currency for purchases is Trader's Tender.

Where the Trading Post is located

  • Alliance: Stormwind, next to the Mage Quarter (coordinates near the bank)
  • Horde: Orgrimmar, the Drag district
  • Dornogal (The War Within): at Supplier Mizix, when the mount appears in the extended rotation

How to earn Trader's Tender

Every month you receive 500 Trader's Tender for free, simply by visiting the Trading Post. Additional tender is earned through the monthly Traveler's Log:

  1. Open the Traveler's Log in the Trading Post interface
  2. Complete the tasks from the log — they include activities like "Earn 7,500 PvP Experience", "Complete 5 World Quests", "Win 3 Battlegrounds" and similar
  3. Completing tasks rewards you with Trader's Tender. Filling the progress bar completely grants a bonus prize
  4. Unused tender carries over to the next month, but the maximum reserve is capped at 5,000 tender

How much to save up

If the Spectral Gryphon appears at the regular price (650 Trader's Tender), one month of collecting will be enough provided you complete a few extra tasks from the Traveler's Log on top of the free 500 tender. If the mount is sold at a discount (500 tender, as in February 2025), simply claiming the monthly bonus is enough.

Mount history

The Spectral Gryphon has gone through several stages of availability:

  • March 2012 — February 2014: the mount was granted through the "Scroll of Resurrection" program. You sent a scroll to an inactive player, and if they returned to the game and paid for at least 30 days of subscription, you received a Spectral Mount Chest in the mail. For Alliance characters it contained the Spectral Gryphon, for Horde — the Spectral Wind Rider
  • Patch 5.0.3 (August 2012): the mount became available to all characters on the account
  • Patch 5.4.7 (February 2014): the "Scroll of Resurrection" program was discontinued. The mount became unavailable to new players
  • Patch 9.0.1 (October 2020): the level requirement was lowered to 10
  • Patch 10.2 (November 2023): the mount returned to the game through the Trading Post for 650 Trader's Tender
  • February 2025: a repeat appearance in the Trading Post for 500 Trader's Tender

Tips

1

Watch the rotation — subscribe to updates on wowhead.com or check the Trading Post assortment on the first day of every month. The Spectral Gryphon appears irregularly, and it is easy to miss.

2

Save up tender in advance — if you know the mount may appear, keep a reserve of 650 tender. Unused tender carries over between months.

3

Complete the Traveler's Log — even if there is nothing interesting in the current month, complete the tasks to accumulate tender. The bonus tender will come in handy when the mount you want appears in the rotation.

4

Check Dornogal — in The War Within expansion, some Trading Post items are sold by Trader Mizix in Dornogal at a discount. February 2025 is a direct example, when the mount cost 500 instead of 650 tender.

5

The mount adapts to your faction — if you play both Alliance and Horde, you don't need to buy two mounts. One item automatically turns into the Spectral Gryphon on Alliance and the Spectral Wind Rider on Horde.

6

Use /mountspecial — while seated on the mount, type the /mountspecial command to see a unique animation. The Spectral Gryphon lets out a characteristic spectral cry.

7

Combine with transmogrification — the mount pairs perfectly with spectral and silvery-blue gear. Try sets from Naxxramas or Icecrown Citadel for a thematic look.
