Overview

Colossal Wraithbound Mawrat

Game iconSpectral Mawrat's Tail is an epic item added to World of Warcraft in the Shadowlands expansion (patch 9.2 "Eternity's End"). When used, it teaches the spell Game iconColossal Wraithbound Mawrat — a ground mount from the Mawrat family introduced in patch 9.2. The model is a huge, semi-transparent spectral rat with an ethereal glow.

As the item description reads: "Saturated with the energies of tortured souls, these creatures have gained spectral abilities that make them quite elusive." The item drops from the Mawsworn Supply Chest, which spawns in the desolate regions of the Zereth Mortis zone. The drop chance is extremely low — roughly 0.5% per chest opened.

Why you want this mount

  • A unique spectral model — unlike the other four Mawrats from patch 9.2, this version has a semi-transparent ethereal effect that stands out against standard mounts.
  • The fifth in the Mawrat collection — together with the Game iconColossal Ebonclaw Mawrat and the others, it completes the full set.
  • Endless farming with no caps — chests can be opened with no daily limit, unlike most rare mounts tied to a weekly reset.
  • Account-bound once obtained — the mount spell is applied to your character and becomes available to all of your characters through the collection.
  • Speed of a standard ground mount — +60% or +100% depending on your riding skill.
  • A relic of a bygone era — patch 9.2 launched in February 2022 and no longer offers seasonal rewards, but the chests still spawn and the zone is easily soloed at level 80.

How to obtain

The primary and only source of the Game iconSpectral Mawrat's Tail is the Mawsworn Supply Chest, which spawns in Zereth Mortis. The mount is not tied to reputation, a quest, or a raid — just pure chest farming.

  1. Unlock access to the Zereth Mortis zone by completing the patch 9.2 starting storyline. The quests begin with the Pristine Magister Voale in Oribos
  2. Earn flying in Zereth Mortis — it dramatically speeds up patrolling the spawn points.
  3. Plot a route through the zone's desolate regions: the Gate of Dread, the Forerunners' Isle, and the Stratostorm — that is exactly where the chests spawn.
  4. Kill Mawsworn along the way — they drop Mawsworn trophies and reliably grant progress on daily quests.
  5. When you spot a chest, open it — in 0.5% of cases the loot will contain the Game iconSpectral Mawrat's Tail.
  6. Use the item to unlock the mount spell Game iconColossal Wraithbound Mawrat in your collection.

Contents of the Mawsworn supply chest

Each Mawsworn Supply Chest holds a fixed patch 9.2 loot table plus a chance at rare items. The Spectral Mawrat's Tail is the most valuable and rarest drop.

Loot Quantity Chance
Game iconProtoplasmic Thread 11–14 Guaranteed
Game iconProgenitor Essentia 3–5 (up to 3–9 with the analyzer) Guaranteed
Game iconAnima Gossamer 4–5 Guaranteed
Cypher gear (random) 1 item Frequent
Game iconSpectral Mawrat's Tail 1 ~0.5%

Chest farming route

Chests spawn at fixed spawn points but become active in rotation. An empty loop around the zone takes 10–15 minutes on a flying mount. Below are the key regions with the coordinates of reference points.

  1. Gate of Dread region — a desolate area in the northern part of Zereth Mortis, home to the main Mawsworn forces. Check the clusters of crates and the camp tents
  2. Forerunners' Isle — a floating island in the center of the map with a large number of Mawsworn patrols. Chests spawn at the foot of the cliffs
  3. Stratostorm — desert dunes in the west of the zone. Use the fast-travel points near the waypoints and circle the oases
  4. Run TomTom with the spawn-point coordinates — the point map leads you from one to the next
  5. After checking every point, return to the first one — the chests may already have respawned

Useful addons

  • HandyNotes with the Shadowlands module — shows the chest spawn points directly on the map
  • TomTom — coordinate navigation
  • Rarity — tracks attempts and statistics for rare items

Other mounts in the Mawrat family

Patch 9.2 added five Mawrats. The other four have different sources and are often farmed in parallel.

Farming optimization

Daily rotation

The chests are not tied to a daily reset — you can open them endlessly. The limiting factor is the respawn time and the number of points.

  1. Build a route of 10–15 verified spawn points using the HandyNotes addon
  2. Run the full loop, opening every chest you find
  3. If a chest is only active part of the time, mark it and come back in 20–30 minutes

Multi-farming on alts

Unlike weekly sources such as invasions or bags, the chests in Zereth Mortis are opened individually by each character, but the number of attempts across the zone is shared — they do not multiply. As a result, multi-farming on alts gives no boost to your chances.

  • Focus on a single "main" character that has flying unlocked in Zereth Mortis and the maximum cypher analyzer upgrades collected
  • Use alts only for other patch 9.2 mounts that are farmed in parallel

Tips

1

Brace for a long farm — a 0.5% chance means an average drop after ~140 chests. That takes anywhere from a few days to several weeks.

2

Unlock flying — without it, a zone route takes 3–4 times longer. The Zereth Mortis flying quest chain is short and available at any max level.

3

Use spawn-point addons — searching for chests manually is inefficient, and a community map saves hours.

4

Don't open chests at low level — the contents scale, but the cyphers and flux are only useful at max level.

5

Combine with the other Mawrats — while farming the Spectral Mawrat's Tail, kill Iskar for a second mount from the same family.

6

Note that the farm is solo — server PvP can interfere if you play on a PvP realm. On normal and RP realms the farm goes undisturbed.

7

The mount is account-wide once applied — as soon as the inv_mawratmount_04Spectral Mawrat's Tail is used, the inv_mawratmount_04Colossal Wraithbound Mawrat appears in the collection of all your characters.
