Spectral Phoenix

Reins of the Spectral Phoenix is a flying mount added to the World of Warcraft files in the Battle for Azeroth expansion (patch 8.0.1, July 2018). The model is a lighter, more transparent variation of the classic Reins of the Dark Phoenix with a ghostly effect layered on top. In essence it is a "semi-transparent" twin of the guild phoenix — the same seating, the same wingspan, but with an otherworldly, half-spectral glow.

The mount's main quirk is that it was never granted to live players. The Reins of the Spectral Phoenix exist only in the game client and were used during the Battle for Azeroth beta, but before the expansion launched they were replaced with a different mount. The phoenix is absent from player collections, and as of the current patch 11.1 Season 2 there is no official way to obtain it.

This guide will help you understand what the mount actually is, why it was pulled from the rewards, and what it was ultimately replaced with. If you were looking for a working way to add the Reins of the Spectral Phoenix to your collection — no such method exists today.

The Reins of the Spectral Phoenix were datamined from the Battle for Azeroth beta client in May 2018. Initially, Blizzard tied them to the 100 Exalted Reputations achievement — for reaching Exalted status with a hundred different factions, the game promised both the title "the Beloved" and the phoenix itself.

The community received the reward coldly. The main complaints were:

• Visually the mount is almost indistinguishable from the Reins of the Dark Phoenix, which guilds buy from a vendor for a level 3 guild achievement. The model is the same; only the tone changes
• For such a labor-intensive achievement (grinding 100 reputations is a task spanning hundreds of hours), players expected a unique model, not a recolor of an existing one
• The semi-transparent effect looked like an "unfinished" version of the dark phoenix rather than a separate premium mount

In one of the following beta builds, in early June 2018, Blizzard replaced the 100 Exalted Reputations reward with a new ground mount — the Pureheart Courser, a white unicorn with blue highlights on its horn and hooves. That is the one that shipped in the release version of the expansion, while the Reins of the Spectral Phoenix remained sitting in the game files with no source.

Since then — from June 2018 through the current patch 11.1 — the item has not been returned to the game through any event, the shop, or timed promotions. The wowhead item page explicitly lists the status "unused appearance," and Warcraft Wiki notes that the model is kept in the catalog purely for historical reasons.

The short answer is no. In detail:

• The mount is not tied to any active achievement, quest, or raid. After the 100 Exalted Reputations reward was swapped out, the phoenix was left with no in-game source.
• It is not in the Blizzard shop, in WoW Remix events, in long-achievement rewards, or in battle passes.
• It has not been handed out at festivals, in BlizzCon bundles, or through promo campaigns.
• In the game code, the Reins of the Spectral Phoenix are flagged as an item with no loot box — meaning that even through GM tools no in-game source is configured.
• You can only obtain it through private servers or cheat tools, which violates Blizzard's user agreement and may lead to an account suspension.

In theory the mount could return to the game in the future — Blizzard periodically revives old unused models (as happened with the Obsidian Worldbreaker or some PvP phoenixes). But there have been no official announcements about the Reins of the Spectral Phoenix, neither at BlizzCon 2024 nor in the The War Within roadmap.

If you are hunting for the mount specifically for the 100 Exalted Reputations achievement, the current reward since June 2018 is the Pureheart Courser. It is a ground mount, a white unicorn with blue and silver accents. It is still granted upon completing the achievement.

A quick reference for the Pureheart Courser:

• It is obtained automatically upon completing 100 Exalted Reputations — there is no separate quest to pick up.
• Starting with patch 8.1.0 (December 11, 2018), achievement progress is tracked account-wide: reputations from different characters are combined.
• At the same time you receive the title "the Beloved."
• It is a ground mount; you cannot fly on it. Its speed depends on your riding skill.

If, however, what you want is specifically a similar-in-spirit flying phoenix with a semi-transparent effect, the closest to the cancelled model in appearance are:

• Reins of the Dark Phoenix — the original model, purchased from the guild vendor for 3,000 gold after the guild earns the "Darker Than Night" achievement. Requires Exalted status with the guild
• Ashes of Al'ar — the classic phoenix from The Burning Crusade, a rare drop from Kael'thas Sunstrider in The Eye

The phoenix itself has already been sitting as dead weight in the client for seven years, so you should not count on it returning any time soon.

The Reins of the Spectral Phoenix are a textbook example of a mount that exists in the game technically but is completely unavailable to players. The model was designed as a reward for 100 Exalted Reputations, but already during the Battle for Azeroth beta it was replaced with the Pureheart Courser because of its similarity to the existing Reins of the Dark Phoenix. In the years since the expansion released in 2018, Blizzard has not returned the item to the game by any means, and there is no official method to add it to your collection in 2026.

If you were planning to farm this particular phoenix — switch to the current reward, the Pureheart Courser, or to the visually close Reins of the Dark Phoenix from the guild vendor. And keep an eye out for a possible return of the model through wowhead threads and the patch notes of new updates.
