Overview

Spinemaw Gladechewer

Game iconSpinemaw Gladechewer is a ground mount of the gorm family, added in patch 9.0.1 of the Shadowlands expansion. Gorms are massive beetle-like creatures that dwell in the forests of Ardenweald. The Spinemaw Gladechewer stands out with its yellow-brown chitin and the wooden growths on its back, which are part of its body and help it absorb anima from the air.

According to the in-game description: "Spriggan riders tie pieces of anima-deprived debris to sticks in front of their mounts' faces to steer them. It's... an imperfect art".

The mount drops from the rare enemy Gormtamer Tizo in the Mistveil Tangle, Ardenweald. To make Tizo appear, you need to complete a short chain of events by killing the local elite mobs.

Context: Shadowlands is an outdated expansion. At level 80 in The War Within, every mob in Ardenweald dies in a couple of hits, and you can get there through a portal in Oribos. Farming the mount takes from 10 to 30 minutes.

Why You Want This Mount

  • Unique gorm model — a massive beetle-like creature with wooden growths. The Spinemaw Gladechewer belongs to the gorm family, which includes five more mounts in different color schemes (Darkmaul Shell, Pallid Gnasher, and others).
  • Guaranteed drop — according to the community, the mount drops at a rate close to 100%. No months-long farming with a 1% chance.
  • Simple requirements — no reputation, covenant, achievement, or story chain is required. All you need is to reach the right location and kill a chain of mobs.
  • Achievement included — killing Gormtamer Tizo counts toward the Adventurer of Ardenweald achievement.
  • Counts toward your collection — the mount is added to your overall mount tally for collector achievements.

How to Get to Ardenweald

Ardenweald is one of the four main zones of Shadowlands. You can get there in several ways:

  1. Through Oribos: teleport to Oribos (a portal is available in the capitals of Dornogal, Stormwind, and Orgrimmar). From Oribos, take the flight point to the Mistveil Tangle in Ardenweald
  2. Directly: if you have the flight point in Ardenweald unlocked, use it from any connected location
  3. Via Hearthstone: if your Hearthstone is set to Oribos or a Shadowlands zone, use it and fly to the desired point

If you are entering Shadowlands for the first time, you will need to complete a short intro scene in Oribos (or skip it via the NPC Chromie at the entrance to the Maw).

Mistveil Tangle Coordinates

The target zone is the Mistveil Tangle, located in the western part of Ardenweald, near the entrance to the Mists of Tirna Scithe dungeon.

/way Ardenweald 26.4 54.3 Mistveil Tangle — farming zone /way Ardenweald 29.7 55.4 Alternative Tizo spawn point

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Get to the Mistveil Tangle

Fly to the western part of Ardenweald to coordinates 26.4, 54.3. You will end up in a maze-like area overgrown with trees and mushrooms. The entrance to the Mists of Tirna Scithe dungeon is also here — use it as a landmark.

Step 2: Kill Spinemaw Mobs

Two types of elite gorm mobs roam the zone:

  • Maddened Sentinel — large elite mobs
  • Spinemaw Dread — riders who sit atop the Maddened Sentinels

There are also non-elite mobs:

  • Spinemaw Bonecrusher
  • Spinemaw Lackey

Kill everything in sight. Your goal is to trigger the appearance of the next mob in the chain.

Step 3: Wait for Crunchy to Appear

After killing a certain number of Spinemaw mobs, a gorm named Crunchy will appear. The moment it spawns is accompanied by a chat message: "The enemy is too strong! Save us, Tizo!"

The time it takes for Crunchy to appear varies — from a few minutes to half an hour. At level 80, mobs die instantly, so the farm goes quickly.

Step 4: Kill Crunchy

Crunchy is an elite gorm, significantly larger than the zone's regular mobs. At level 80 it poses no threat whatsoever. Kill it.

Step 5: Kill Gormtamer Tizo

Immediately after Crunchy's death, Gormtamer Tizo appears. This is a rare spriggan rider. Kill him — the Game iconSpinemaw Gladechewer mount will appear in the loot with a guaranteed chance.

Step 6: Collect the Loot

Open the loot window and take the mount. Use the item from your inventory — the mount will become available on all characters on your account.

Farming Optimization

Speeding Up Crunchy's Appearance

The longest stage is waiting for Crunchy to appear. Here is how to speed up the process:

  • Kill all types of mobs, not just the elites. The non-elite Spinemaw Bonecrushers and Lackeys also contribute to the spawn trigger
  • Move in a loop across the entire maze zone, covering the maximum amount of territory. Mobs respawn fairly quickly
  • Use AoE abilities for mass clearing — at level 80, any class kills them with a single touch

Group Farming

Although the mount is easy to farm solo at level 80, a group speeds up the process:

  • More players kill mobs faster, which speeds up the Crunchy trigger
  • The mount is available to all group members who dealt damage to Tizo — a single summon can supply an entire raid with the mount
  • Use the group finder: keywords "Tizo", "Spinemaw", "Gormtamer"

Optimal Classes for Farming

Class Advantage
Druid Instant flight form, quick movement between mob packs
Demon Hunter Glide and double jump for navigating the maze
Mage Teleport to Oribos, powerful AoE
Monk Zen Flight and high mobility

Combine It with Other Farming

While you are in Ardenweald, check in parallel on other rare enemies that also drop mounts:

  • Gigantaur — drops the Game iconArboreal Gulper, another mount from Ardenweald
  • Nightmane — drops the Game iconShimmermist Runner, a unicorn mount
  • Wildseed Cradle — drops from the Sapling Wildseed

Tips

1

Farming is possible once per day per character. If Tizo has already been killed on a specific character today, a repeat spawn for that character will not be available. Use alts for additional attempts if the mount does not drop on the first try.

2

The mount binds when acquired. It cannot be passed to another player or sold on the auction house.

3

Install the HandyNotes: Shadowlands addon. It will mark all of Ardenweald's rare enemies on the map, including the spawn points of the Tizo chain mobs.

4

The covenant does not matter. You do not need to be a member of the Night Fae covenant to farm this mount. Any covenant (or none at all) works.

5

Check the zone before you start farming. If other players are already killing mobs in the Tangle, join them or create a group — Crunchy will appear faster.

6

The mount is account-wide. Once you learn the item, the mount unlocks on all characters that meet the riding skill requirement.

7

Enable War Mode with caution. Although War Mode grants a bonus to experience and resources, in outdated Shadowlands zones it can lead to unwanted PvP encounters. In this case, the bonus is insignificant.

8

Don't confuse it with the Arboreal Gulper. Two similar mounts are farmed in Ardenweald. The Spinemaw Gladechewer drops from Gormtamer Tizo, while the inv_toadardenwealdmountArboreal Gulper drops from Gigantaur. These are different mobs and different mounts.
