Get Staff of Sorcerer-Thane Thaurissan
Overview

Staff of Sorcerer-Thane Thaurissan is a two-handed staff of epic quality, added to World of Warcraft with the Cataclysm expansion. It is a massive dwarven rod with a dark iron head and runic carvings, kept in a cold gray-steel palette with smoldering red accents. The weapon nods to the lore of the Dark Iron clan: Sorcerer-Thane Thaurissan ruled the Dark Iron dwarves during the War of the Three Hammers, and it was his reckless ritual that summoned Ragnaros.
An important point about the source: contrary to a common misconception, this staff does NOT drop from Emperor Dagran Thaurissan in Blackrock Depths. The item is named after the historical Sorcerer-Thane, but it is obtained in a completely different way — it is a rare artifact of the Archaeology profession from the dwarf branch. The dungeon bosses have nothing to do with it.
Today the staff is taken purely for its appearance. The model is sought after by those assembling a "dwarven" or "fiery-forged" look for mages, priests and other staff wielders.
Source
The staff is obtained through the Archaeology profession by assembling it as a rare artifact of the dwarf branch. It is not a mob drop and not a vendor purchase — you have to dig.
- An Archaeology skill of at least 450 is required for the project to appear in the journal.
- Assembling it requires 150 units of Dwarf Archaeology Fragment.
- You can invest up to three keystones
Dwarf Rune Stone into the assembly; each stone counts for 12 fragments and noticeably cuts down the farm. - Fragments are gathered at dwarf dig sites across the Eastern Kingdoms.
- The best zones for dwarf dig sites are the Badlands, Loch Modan and Searing Gorge.
- The project is rare: it shows up in the research journal at random among ordinary dwarf artifacts, so the exact time to collect it cannot be predicted.
Binding — once the project is completed, the item is created directly in the inventory and bound to the character.
Who it suits visually
- Suits "dwarven" and "forged" sets in a gray-steel and dark-iron palette.
- Harmonizes with armor that has smoldering red or orange accents — a look in the spirit of the Dark Iron clan.
- Works well in mage and priest sets that play up the theme of runes and ancient relics.
- Contrasts with light cloth armor — a debatable but expressive choice for a "scholar-archaeologist."
- Thematically fits images tied to Blackrock Mountain, Ragnaros and dwarven history.
Tips
Raise Archaeology to 450, otherwise the rare project simply will not appear in the journal.
Keep a Dwarf Rune Stone in reserve: three stones remove 36 fragments from the required 150.
Focus your digs on zones with a high share of dwarf sites — the Badlands and Loch Modan provide them most often.
Use the "Survey" ability on the ground to find precise dig points faster and save time at each site.
Don't fixate on a specific artifact: you don't choose which project drops, so collect all dwarf projects in a row and stockpile fragments.
The "Chalice of the Mountain Kings" and "Clockwork Gnome" from the same branch are completed in parallel — this makes the farm less monotonous.
Leveling Archaeology and farming combine well with ordinary flights across the Eastern Kingdoms, stopping by dig sites along the way.
Stock up on patience: a rare project may fail to drop for dozens of dig cycles in a row, and that is normal.
