Overview

Stix's Metal Detector

Game icon Stix's Metal Detector is an epic one-handed dagger added to World of Warcraft with the The War Within expansion. Instead of a traditional blade, this weapon sports a makeshift goblin metal detector: a round search coil at the end of the shaft and toggle switches on the grip, exactly like the ones the junkyard goblins of Undermine use to sort scrap metal.

The dagger's primary stat is Intellect, so it is worn by caster classes that have a dagger slot unlocked: Mage, Druid, Priest, Shaman, Warlock and Evoker. Thanks to its bold garbage theme and its satire of goblin culture, the model is especially prized by collectors of "industrial" transmog — the dagger fits naturally into any look built around machinery, gears and gadgets.

This is one of the most recognizable daggers of the Undermine raid cycle and the only weapon in the game shaped like a metal detector. Its comedic presentation makes it a coveted target for anyone collecting a deliberately absurd rather than an "epic-heroic" character appearance.

Source

Stix's Metal Detector drops from Stix Bunkjunker, the fourth boss of the Liberation of Undermine raid. The raid was added in The War Within alongside the "Undermine" update and became the main story content of the expansion's second season.

Where the boss is located

  • The raid is set in the goblin metropolis of Undermine; the entrance is right next to the city hotel.
  • Story-wise, Stix Bunkjunker runs the city dump: he commands the cleanup crews and devises inventive ways to dispose of everything "surplus" in Undermine.
  • The encounter opens after the third boss Rik Reverb is defeated and precedes the fifth boss Sprocketmonger Lockenstock.
  • The whole fight revolves around the junkyard theme: players turn into rolling garbage balls, collect scrap and detonate "swap" bombs.

Difficulties and drop chance

The dagger is available on all four raid difficulties — Raid Finder, Normal, Heroic and Mythic. The item level rises from difficulty to difficulty; on Mythic the dagger has item level 92.

According to Wowhead, the chance to obtain Stix's Metal Detector from the Mythic version of the boss is roughly 30%. On the other difficulties the chance stays at about the same level. This makes the dagger one of the most accessible epics of the encounter: across a few raid runs it will almost certainly drop at least once.

The boss's loot is not shared between difficulties — on a single character you can kill Stix Bunkjunker on different difficulty levels in one seasonal week and thereby increase your number of attempts.

Solo farming

Raids from previous cycles eventually become soloable. At max level, the Liberation of Undermine on Raid Finder and Normal difficulty is within reach for most classes solo. The Heroic and Mythic versions remain group content longer due to the peak damage phases of the later bosses.

The fight against Stix Bunkjunker specifically is forgiving for a solo run: it has no hard raid-wide damage check. The most convenient option is classes with built-in self-healing — Blood Death Knight, Guardian Druid, Protection Paladin, Brewmaster Monk. They comfortably survive the periodic damage from the rolling garbage and the phase when the boss takes flight and barely takes damage.

How to reach the raid

The entrance to the Liberation of Undermine is in Undermine itself. To unlock access:

  • Complete the introductory story campaign of the "Undermine" update — it opens the Undermine zone and the goblin capital itself.
  • Once you have explored the city, the Explorers' League portal network will connect Undermine with the rest of the expansion's hubs, and you will be able to reach the raid entrance by teleport.
  • A difficulty steward stands at the raid portal — there you switch between Raid Finder, Normal, Heroic or Mythic mode.

The campaign can be cleared over a couple of evenings on any max-level character; on higher levels, thanks to scaling, it is completed noticeably faster.

Alternatives and recolors

The metal detector model is unique in the game — Stix's Metal Detector has no direct recolors with the same search coil and volume toggles. It is the only weapon with such a silhouette, so a fully identical replacement does not exist.

If what matters to you is exactly the aesthetic of goblin junk and engineering contraptions, build your look from other rewards of the Liberation of Undermine raid: the weapons of this cycle share a common "junkyard-industrial" language — crumpled metal, wires, rusty rivets. Daggers from the same set of encounters echo the Metal Detector in palette and theme, even though they do not repeat its model.

For a "technological" look in general, the gadget daggers from The War Within content also work, designed not as a blade but as a mechanism or measuring device. They are best picked live through the wardrobe preview, focusing on silhouette and color.

Who it suits visually

  • The "goblin engineer at the dump" look. The dagger completes a set of green-and-yellow leather or mail armor from the Liberation of Undermine raid and the dungeons of the same season.
  • Satirical Mage and Warlock sets. The metal detector breaks the usual "magical" caster aesthetic and fits perfectly into joke looks built around goblin culture and the trash empire of Undermine.
  • Restoration Druid in a "natural-industrial" combination. The dark wood of the grip highlights the contrast between technology and nature in green tones.
  • Shadow Priest with a theme of civilizational decay. The dagger's yellow-green palette fits well into concepts of ruined mining towns and abandoned factories.
  • Evoker in a bronze-green range. If the evoker look is built around metal and patina, the metal detector dagger adds the final accent.

The model does not pair with classic elven and gothic aesthetics — the silhouette is too "technical" and deliberately mundane.

Tips

1

Go for the dagger on Heroic difficulty. It is a convenient compromise: the drop chance is roughly the same as on Mythic, while the bosses are noticeably easier.

2

Unlock the appearance right after the first drop. The dagger grants Intellect — if your character has a higher-level weapon equipped, equip Stix's Metal Detector for a second through your inventory and the model will be added to the wardrobe for your entire account.

3

Run Stix on different characters once a week. The raid difficulties do not share loot, so in one seasonal week you can try your luck on several casters and raise your overall chance.

4

Do not confuse the dagger with the inv_misc_punchcards_blueMetal Detector toy from the Battle for Azeroth expansion — that is a blue punch card for the mechanical companion in Mechagon, not a weapon. Stix's Metal Detector is specifically an epic dagger.

5

Combine the dagger hunt with farming the rest of Stix Bunkjunker's loot. The boss drops gear for several roles at once, so a run is rarely a complete waste.

6

For solo farming, choose self-healing classes — Blood Death Knight, Guardian Druid, Protection Paladin or Brewmaster Monk comfortably survive the rolling garbage damage.

7

Build a complete "junkyard" look from the loot of the Liberation of Undermine and the dungeons of the same season — this content's armor is held to a single visual language of crumpled metal and rust.
