Get Sturdy Soulsteel Mawrat Harness mount
Overview

Sturdy Soulsteel Mawrat Harness is a taming item that teaches the rare ground mount
Colossal Ebonclaw Mawrat. It is a massive dark mawrat with black claws, fitted with a harness of sturdy soulsteel — a metal mined in the Maw and Torghast. According to the item's description, this predatory and cunning creature grew to enormous size by devouring weakened souls in the Jailer's Tower and vulnerable mawsworn.
The mount was added to World of Warcraft in the Shadowlands expansion with the release of patch 9.2 "Eternity's End." It is awarded for the first completion of difficulty Layer 4 in Torghast's new mode — The Jailer's Gauntlet: Layer 4. This is the only way to obtain the mount: it is not sold at the auction house and does not drop from bosses directly.
Why you want this mount
- Unique mawrat model — the Colossal Ebonclaw Mawrat is one of four giant mawrats added in patch 9.2. The other three are earned through different Torghast and Maw rewards. The dark ebon coloring with black armor is considered the most striking of all the variants
- Guaranteed reward — unlike most Shadowlands mounts, this mount does not depend on chance. Complete Layer 4 of the Jailer's Gauntlet once and the mount is yours
- Torghast content stays relevant — in Midnight (2026), Torghast is fully accessible and significantly easier thanks to character level scaling. Layer 4 of the Jailer's Gauntlet can be cleared solo in 20–30 minutes
- Account-wide access — the mount binds on pickup but unlocks for all characters on your account, regardless of faction, race, and class
- Additional Torghast rewards — alongside the mount you will earn Soul Ash, Soul Cinders, and Cosmic Flux — currencies for crafting Shadowlands legendary items that remain useful for clearing old content
How to get
To obtain the mount you need to unlock the Jailer's Gauntlet, select difficulty Layer 4, and complete all eight floors of the run. The reward is granted automatically after defeating the final boss.
- Reach your character's maximum level or at least level 50 — unlocking the Maw is tied to the Shadowlands storyline
- Complete the Shadowlands introductory quest line up to the point where Torghast opens, if you haven't already
- Pick up the unlock quest The Jailer's Gauntlet from the broker Ve'nio in Oribos. The character stands on the lower tier by one of the columns in the central ring (coordinates ~56, 50)
- Teleport to the Maw, head to the entrance of Torghast, and go inside. In Torghast's vestibule, find the new Jailer's Gauntlet portal (next to the wing selection) and step through it
- Turn in the quest to the broker inside and select Layer 4 when starting the run. Layers 1–3 give less valuable rewards, while Layers 5–8 contain no unique items other than achievements
- Clear all 8 floors and defeat the final boss. After the achievement The Jailer's Gauntlet: Layer 4 registers, the Sturdy Soulsteel Mawrat Harness will drop into your inventory
- Use the item — the mount will appear in the Mount Journal on all characters on the account
Unlocking the Jailer's Gauntlet
The Jailer's Gauntlet is a separate Torghast mode added in patch 9.2 as an alternative to the standard wings. Unlocking it takes 10–15 minutes and is required once per character.
Unlock steps
- Fly to Oribos and descend to the lower tier (where the portals to the Shadowlands zones are located)
- Find the broker Ve'nio — he stands by one of the columns of the lower ring. If you don't see the quest marker, move along the wall clockwise
- Pick up the Jailer's Gauntlet quest. The quest will give an item to open the new portal in Torghast
- Travel to the Maw through the standard entrance on the upper tier of Oribos. If you have the teleport to the Beastwarren beacon unlocked, use it
- Reach the entrance of Torghast (coordinates ~39, 47 in the Maw) and go inside
- In Torghast's vestibule, activate the item from the quest on the new portal — this will open the Jailer's Gauntlet
- Turn in the quest and select the desired difficulty layer before starting the run
If you don't see the quest
- Make sure you have completed the Shadowlands introductory campaign storyline and gained access to Torghast — the quest Into Torghast should be turned in
- Unlock at least the first wing of Torghast — without this, entry into the Tower is blocked
- Check that your character is at level 50 or higher
Strategy for clearing Layer 4
The Jailer's Gauntlet consists of 8 floors at every difficulty layer. The first 7 are normal combat rooms with mobs and mini-bosses, the 8th is the layer's final boss. In Midnight the content is easily cleared solo thanks to damage scaling, but on Layer 4 there are a few things to keep in mind.
What you need before entering
- A character at level 70 or higher — that way damage and health scaling will make the run comfortable
- Gear from item level 400 and up — for a confident clear. At a higher level there will be no difficulty
- Free inventory space — Torghast regularly drops consumables, stones, and quest items
- Reputation with Ve'nari is not required for the trial itself, but upgrades leveled up with her speed up the run
Order of actions on Layer 4
- Choose a strong solo specialization with self-healing mechanics: Demon Hunter, Protection Warrior, Guardian Druid, Retribution Paladin, Shadow Priest
- On the early floors, collect Anima Powers — choose damage and survivability boosts (percent health, health steal, bonus to crit damage)
- Open every chest and use every anima vial — the bonuses stack and greatly simplify the final boss
- On floors 3–5, mini-bosses with increased rewards appear. They are not mandatory, but killing them gives additional Anima Powers
- Save your health restoration abilities for the 8th floor — the final boss has enhanced stats
- After defeating the final boss, wait for the reward window and pick up the Sturdy Soulsteel Mawrat Harness
Rewards of all layers
Layer | Achievement | Main unique reward |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Jailer's Gauntlet: Layer 1 | "Hardlight Tormentor" pet |
| 2 | The Jailer's Gauntlet: Layer 2 | "Subjugated Hearthstone" toy |
| 3 | The Jailer's Gauntlet: Layer 3 | "the Gauntlet Runner" title |
| 4 | The Jailer's Gauntlet: Layer 4 | Sturdy Soulsteel Mawrat Harness (mount) |
| 5 | The Jailer's Gauntlet: Layer 5 | Currencies (Soul Ash, Cinders) |
| 6 | The Jailer's Gauntlet: Layer 6 | Currencies |
| 7 | The Jailer's Gauntlet: Layer 7 | Currencies |
| 8 | The Jailer's Gauntlet: Layer 8 | Meta-achievement, currencies |
For the mount itself, Layer 4 is enough — you don't have to complete the layers in order; they are not locked behind one another once the Gauntlet is unlocked.
Tips
Complete the Jailer's Gauntlet only once — the mount is given for the first completion of Layer 4; repeat runs do not give a duplicate. If you want the other mawrat mounts, you need to do other Torghast and Maw activities, not restart the Gauntlet
Don't raise the difficulty for the sake of speed — the rewards for Layers 5–8 contain only currencies and the meta-achievement. If your goal is just the mount, take exactly Layer 4 and don't waste time
Stockpile Anima Powers on the early floors — don't rush past chests and vials. Every minute spent collecting shortens the fight with the final boss
Use Ve'nari's upgrades — if you have leveled reputation with Ve'nari, buy consumables for the Maw and Torghast from her: pocket tablets and other single-use items will make the run easier
Invite friends for the higher layers — a group is not needed for the mount, but if after Layer 4 you want to clear Layer 8 for the meta-achievement, a full group with a tank and healer will be needed
Choose a solo specialization with self-healing — Vengeance Demon Hunter, Protection Warrior, Retribution Paladin, or Guardian Druid clear the Gauntlet without trouble even at a low gear level
The mount is account-wide after obtaining — once one character receives the Sturdy Soulsteel Mawrat Harness, the Colossal Ebonclaw Mawrat mount appears in the collection of all your characters, including new alts
