Overview

Sunhide Gronnling

Game iconSunhide Gronnling is an epic ground mount added in patch 6.0.2 of the Warlords of Draenor expansion. It is a massive gronn with a golden hide hardened by the scorching sun of Draenor. The mount drops with a guaranteed chance (100%) from the rare elite mob Poundfist in the Gorgrond zone. The item description reads: "Loves the sun, hates everything else."

The Sunhide Gronnling is one of the most recognizable mounts of the Warlords of Draenor era. The model is a muscular gronn with a distinctive orange-gold hide. The mount is noticeably larger than most ground mounts, which makes it especially impressive out in the open world.

Why You Want This Mount

  • Guaranteed drop — unlike most rare mounts, the Sunhide Gronnling drops with a 100% chance. The main challenge is waiting for Poundfist to appear, not winning a roll
  • Awarded to all participants — every player who deals damage to Poundfist receives the mount. You don't need to be in a group or raid — simply tagging the mob is enough
  • Unique model — this is one of the few gronn-shaped mounts. Its massive frame with its distinctive golden hide stands out among other mounts
  • Legacy content — fast kill — at level 90 in Midnight, Poundfist is killed in seconds by any class and specialization
  • Account-wide — once obtained, the mount becomes available on every character on your account

Requirements

  • Minimum character level: 10 (to access Gorgrond via the Chromie system)
  • Riding skill: Apprentice Riding (to use the mount)
  • The mount is ground-only — it does not fly
  • No special quests or reputation are required

How to Get to Gorgrond

Gorgrond is a zone on Draenor, reachable through several routes.

Via the portal to Draenor

  1. Head to your faction's capital (Stormwind for the Alliance, Orgrimmar for the Horde)
  2. Use the portal to Ashran / Alternate Draenor located in the portal room
  3. From your garrison or Ashran, fly north into Gorgrond

Via the Chromie system (low-level characters)

  1. Talk to Chromie in your faction's capital
  2. Select the Warlords of Draenor timeline
  3. Complete the Dark Portal intro scenario
  4. Reach Gorgrond as you progress through the story chain

Quick route (if Draenor is already unlocked)

If you have a hearthstone set to your garrison, or a flight whistle, use it and fly from the garrison to Gorgrond. The destination is the Gronn Canyon, the central part of Gorgrond.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1 — get to Gorgrond

Use the portal to Draenor from your faction's capital. From your garrison or Ashran, fly to Gorgrond. Your goal is the Gronn Canyon in the central part of the zone.

Step 2 — check the spawn points

Poundfist appears at one of five fixed points in Gorgrond. He spawns at only one of them at a time. Fly around all the points to check whether he's there:

/way Gorgrond 40.1 26.4 Poundfist (point 1) /way Gorgrond 51.4 43.1 Poundfist (point 2) /way Gorgrond 45.4 47.5 Poundfist (point 3) /way Gorgrond 47.0 54.1 Poundfist (point 4) /way Gorgrond 43.2 55.5 Poundfist (point 5)

Step 3 — if Poundfist is there

Attack the mob. At level 80 he will die in a few seconds. After the kill, Game iconSunhide Gronnling will appear in your loot automatically. Use the item to learn the mount.

Step 4 — if Poundfist is not there

Poundfist's respawn timer ranges from 48 to 96 hours (2–4 days). If the mob is not at any of the five points, you have several options:

  • Wait on location — park your character at one of the spawn points and check periodically
  • Tracking addon — install the RareScanner or SilverDragon addon, which will play an audio alert when Poundfist appears within view
  • Check general chat — ask in the /1 (General) channel in Gorgrond whether anyone has seen Poundfist
  • Periodic visits — drop into the zone every few hours and fly around all five points

Farming Optimization

Setting up the client for AFK camping

If you're leaving your character at a spawn point and doing other things:

  1. Switch your display mode to "Windowed (Fullscreen)" — this lets you hear game sounds when the window is minimized
  2. In the sound settings, enable "Sound in Background"
  3. Install the RareScanner or SilverDragon addon — they play a loud audio alert when a rare mob is detected
  4. Position your character precisely at one of the spawn points so the addon is guaranteed to catch the appearance

Choosing a camping spot

Of the five spawn points, it's recommended to take a position in the center of the route (coordinates 45.4, 47.5 — point 3), from which you can quickly reach the neighboring points. However, if you see other players guarding a specific point, stand at a less popular one.

Macro for a quick tag

Create a macro for an instant attack so you can manage to tag Poundfist if someone else discovers him:

/tar Poundfist
/cast Moonfire

Replace "Moonfire" with any instant attacking ability of your class.

Account for server maintenance

Poundfist's respawn timer resets after a server reboot (weekly maintenance). This means the earliest spawn after a restart is 48 hours later. Plan your checks accordingly: if the servers rebooted on Tuesday morning, the first possible spawn is no earlier than Thursday.

Tips

1

No group needed — the mount is received by all players who deal damage to Poundfist. You don't need to be in a group, raid, or win a roll. If you see someone hitting the mob — run over and hit it too

2

HP scales — Poundfist's health increases depending on the number of attacking players (hotfix from December 15, 2014). This was done deliberately so the mob doesn't die instantly and everyone who wants to can manage to tag it

3

Check general chat — before you start camping, ask in /1 how long ago Poundfist was killed. Experienced farmers often share information about the last kill

4

The mount is large — the Sunhide Gronnling is significantly bigger than standard mounts. It may not fit through some doorways in cities

5

Alternate characters — leave a low-level alt at one of the spawn points for periodic checks. That way you won't waste your main character's time

6

Time of day matters — according to player observations, competition is significantly lower during nighttime hours by server time. If you spot a spawn at night, your chances of reaching the mob are much higher

7

Patience is the main weapon — obtaining this mount can take anywhere from a single visit (if you're lucky enough to catch a spawn) to several days of camping. Don't rush and don't get discouraged — the mount is guaranteed, it's just a matter of time

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
