Overview

Swift Blue Gryphon

Game iconSwift Blue Gryphon is a fast Alliance flying mount added to World of Warcraft with The Burning Crusade expansion. It's a large, deeply blue gryphon of the dwarven Wildhammer clan: one of four color variations of the "swift" gryphons available for purchase from mount vendors. At top speed it carries you through the air at +280% of your character's base speed, making it a full-fledged epic flying mount.

The mount is bought for gold directly from Wildhammer clan vendors in Stormwind, Outland and Northrend, as well as from a neutral exotic mount dealer in Dalaran. No drop, no quest chains and no complicated achievements — you just need to save up the required sum and fly to one of the vendors.

Why you want this mount

  • Full epic flight speed — +280% air movement speed, one of the fastest classic-style Alliance flying mounts
  • A color for your collection — the blue tint perfectly complements the line of swift gryphons: Swift Red Gryphon, Swift Green Gryphon and Swift Purple Gryphon
  • Account-wide — once learned, the mount stays in your collection forever and becomes available to any character on your account
  • Thematic for dwarves and humans — the classic Alliance gryphon silhouette fits perfectly with the look of Stormwind paladins, warriors and hunters
  • No lotteries or long farming — unlike rare drop mounts, this one is bought guaranteed for a fixed price

The price drops in proportion to your reputation with the faction the specific vendor belongs to. At Exalted the discount reaches 20%, meaning the mount costs roughly 80 gold. For the Wildhammer clan vendors it makes sense to raise your reputation with Stormwind, Honor Hold and the Valiance Expedition in advance.

Where to buy — full vendor list

The Swift Blue Gryphon is sold by five vendors in different locations. Pick the closest one — no one will stop you, they all sell the very same mount.

Tannok Stonebeak — Stormwind

Tannok Stonebeak stands at the Gryphon Roost in Stormwind — right next to the flight master Dungar Longdrink. This is the most convenient option for most Alliance players: you don't need to fly anywhere, and Stormwind is reachable via portal from any capital.

Grunda Bronzewing — Hellfire Peninsula

Grunda Bronzewing is located in Honor Hold on Hellfire Peninsula. You can get there via the portal to Outland from Stormwind — Honor Hold is right behind it. If you've been raising reputation with Honor Hold (which often happens "automatically" while doing Outland quests), you'll get a noticeable discount.

Brunn Flamebeard — Shadowmoon Valley

Brunn Flamebeard sells gryphons at Wildhammer Stronghold in the northwest of Shadowmoon Valley. This is the classic dwarven base of the Wildhammer clan: you fly there on any flying mount from Shattrath or via a flight point.

Durgan Thunderbeak — Borean Tundra

Durgan Thunderbeak stands at Valiance Keep — the main Alliance outpost in the Borean Tundra. He's convenient if you're already in Northrend on business: for the same purchase you'll get a discount from your reputation with the Valiance Expedition.

Mei Francis — Dalaran

Mei Francis is a neutral exotic mount dealer. She stands in Dalaran above the Crystalsong, next to the regular mount vendor. You can buy a gryphon from her even without Stormwind reputation, but the base price is the same — 100 gold.

Step-by-step guide to obtaining it

  1. Level your character to 30 — the formal flying requirement has now been lowered to almost level 10, but to buy an epic gryphon the game will still require Expert riding skill
  2. Learn Riding (Expert) — the basic skill for flying at +150% speed. You'll need to pay no more than 250 gold to any riding trainer
  3. Save up the gold for the mount — 100 gold for the gryphon itself plus a buffer for reputation discounts. If you want to unlock its top speed right away, you'll additionally need Riding (Artisan)
  4. Fly to the nearest vendor — the easiest is to use Tannok Stonebeak in Stormwind. Open the map, set a route to the Gryphon Roost and walk up to the dwarf
  5. Buy the Game iconSwift Blue Gryphon — right-click the vendor, open the storefront and choose the blue variant
  6. Use the item — right-click it, the mount will be learned and appear in the "Mounts" tab (default key P)

After learning it the item can be deleted — the mount stays with you forever and becomes available to all your Alliance characters.

How to save up 100 gold

At level 90, 100 gold is no problem. But if you're playing an alt or just returned to the game, use these tricks:

  • Weekly tasks — simply completing a few "world" quests gives enough gold for the purchase
  • Selling profession materials — herbs, ore and leather sell reliably at the auction house
  • Old Cataclysm and Pandaria raids — solo runs bring in several hundred gold per hour and give transmog along the way
  • Guild bank — most active guilds have a starter allowance for alts

Tips

1

Buy from Tannok if you can't be bothered to fly — the Stormwind vendor is reachable via portal from any capital and requires no knowledge of Outland or Northrend

2

Upgrade your skill to Artisan right away — without Riding (Artisan) the gryphon only flies at +150%, which visually is almost indistinguishable from ordinary flying mounts. It reveals its full potential only with the level 300 skill

3

Playing Horde? — the Swift Blue Gryphon is bound to the Alliance, and there's no direct purchase for the Horde. If you're building a shared account-wide mount collection, create an Alliance character, buy the mount and learn it — after that it will appear on your Horde characters

4

Check the other dwarven mounts — the same vendors sell ordinary gryphons. If you're collecting an "all-Wildhammer" set, buy the missing colors in a single visit
