Get Swift Brown Steed mount
Overview

Swift Brown Steed is an epic ground mount of the Alliance, one of the racial steeds of humans. It is a large horse of a dark brown coat with a black mane and tail, visually stern and restrained — the complete opposite of the bright Swift Palomino. The model appeared in the game back in patch 1.4 and has since remained one of the classic steeds of the Eastern Kingdoms.
The mount is purchased from horse-breeder vendors for just 10 gold. A human can acquire it right away, while the other Alliance races will need Exalted reputation with Stormwind. After using the item, the horse is automatically added to the collection across your entire account.
Why you want this mount
- Simple and quick acquisition — no raids, long quest chains or weekly farming required. All you need is to fly to the nearest vendor and pay 10 gold
- Part of the human racial horse trio — together with the Swift Palomino and the Swift White Steed it completes the full set of epic Stormwind horses
- +3 points to the mount collection for one purchase — a contribution to the achievements for 300, 400 and 500 mounts
- Speed on par with top ground mounts — grants +60% or +100% movement speed depending on riding skill
- Available account-wide — once purchased on one character, the horse appears for all your Alliance characters, including future alts
For non-human Alliance races the only restriction is reputation with Stormwind at the Exalted level. It is easiest to raise via the Stormwind tabard in old dungeons or through the story campaigns of past expansions.
Where to buy
There are three vendors selling the
Swift Brown Steed. They all have the same stock and the same price, so choose whichever is easiest to reach.
Katie Stokes — Stormwind
The main and most convenient option. Katie stands in Stormwind at the entrance to Old Town, next to the SI:7 headquarters, in the horse pens.
The easiest way to get there is through a portal to Stormwind from any faction capital or via your hearthstone. From the Trade District, keep to the right side of the canal, pass by Stormwind Keep, enter Old Town — the horse pens will be on the left, in front of the entrance to the SI:7 building.
Katie Hunter — Elwynn Forest
The second vendor is located at Eastvale Logging Camp in Elwynn Forest, on the eastern edge of the human starting zone.
If you are leveling a human along the classic route or simply happen to be nearby, Katie is more convenient than returning to Stormwind.
Gregor MacVince — Dustwallow Marsh
The third vendor stands on Theramore Isle in Dustwallow Marsh (Kalimdor). Useful if you find yourself on Kalimdor and do not want to teleport to Stormwind.
The destination is a small area with a horse pen within the Theramore fortress grounds. Nearby there is a portal and a flight point, which makes the location convenient for a "swoop in, buy, fly away" run.
Step-by-step acquisition guide
- Create or select a human character. If you play another Alliance race — make sure you have Exalted reputation with Stormwind
- Level up to at least level 10
- Learn Apprentice Riding
- Approach Katie Stokes — she stands literally a couple of meters from the trainer
- Buy the
Swift Brown Steed for 10 gold - Use the item from your bag — the mount is automatically added to the collection and becomes available to all Alliance characters on the account
The entire process takes 2–3 minutes if you are already in Stormwind.
Step-by-step guide for a non-human
If you play a dwarf, night elf, gnome, draenei, worgen, pandaren, mechagnome, dark iron dwarf, kul tiran or void elf — the vendor will refuse to sell you horses until you reach Exalted reputation with Stormwind.
Step 1. Buy the Stormwind tabard
Head up to the Trade District of Stormwind and find Captain Lancy Revshon — he stands on a small platform at the entrance to the Park, next to the Stormwind banners.
From him buy the
Stormwind Tabard for 10 gold. The purchase requires at least Friendly reputation with Stormwind — by default most Alliance races already have it above this level.
Step 2. Equip the tabard and farm reputation in dungeons
Insert the Stormwind tabard into the tabard slot. While it is worn, all reputation from killing mobs inside dungeons goes to the Stormwind fund — this is the main way to quickly reach Exalted.
The best dungeons for farming reputation via the tabard:
- The Underbog and Botanica — many mobs, quick runs
- Utgarde Keep — a classic choice, killed quickly solo
- Magisters' Terrace — a short dungeon, easily reset and started again
- Any Pandaria dungeons with a large number of mobs, for example Mogu'shan Palace
The farming scheme is simple: enter the dungeon, kill all the mobs along the way, leave, reset the instance via the Escape menu → "Reset all instances", enter again. Repeat until the "Exalted" notice lights up.
Step 3. Check reputation and discount
Open the reputation window (hotkey U → "Reputation" tab → "Alliance Capitals" → "Stormwind"). As soon as Exalted appears, the discount at Stormwind vendors reaches 20%, and the
Swift White Steed will cost you not 10 gold but 8.
Step 4. Buy the mount
Return to Katie Stokes and buy all three swift steeds in a single visit. After Exalted the vendor stops objecting to non-human races.
Tips
Grab the whole trio at once — a separate trip for a single
Swift Brown Steed is irrational. 30 gold for three mounts is pennies at level 80, and you immediately complete the entire racial trio
Don't forget the ordinary 1-gold horses — they also count towards the collection, so while you are standing at the NPC it makes sense to buy all four. That's a total of +7 mounts in one visit
The best way to quickly reach Stormwind — a portal from anywhere in the game. From the garrison in Draenor, the Shado-Pan Garrison in Pandaria, or the main city of the current expansion the trip takes less than a minute
The mount is unavailable for Horde characters — faction affiliation is checked separately, and no amount of Stormwind reputation will let a Horde player buy the horse
The mount is account-wide after obtaining — as soon as one character receives the
Swift Brown Steed, it appears in the mount collection of all your Alliance characters, regardless of race and class
