Swift Purple Gryphon
Overview

Swift Purple Gryphon is an epic flying and ground mount added in The Burning Crusade expansion. It is one of seven gryphons available to Alliance players. The mount is purchased from several vendors in Stormwind, Outland and Northrend for 100 gold.
The Swift Purple Gryphon is a large bird with powerful plumage of a rich purple shade. The gryphon model follows the classic style: an eagle's head, wings and front talons of a bird of prey combined with the body and hind legs of a lion. Using the /mountspecial command makes the gryphon perform a unique animation.
Quote from the item description: "The Horde had its dragons, but we had our gryphons. We won that war."
Why You Want This Mount
- Guaranteed acquisition — the mount is bought from a vendor at a fixed price. No farming, random drops or lengthy reputation grinding
- Low cost — only 100 gold, making it one of the most affordable epic flying mounts in the game
- Ground and flying — works both on the ground and in the air. Movement speed depends on your riding skill
- Available to all characters — once purchased, the mount becomes available on every character on your account
- Multiple vendors — the mount is sold by several vendors in different locations, which makes buying it easier
How to Obtain
To buy the mount you must meet two conditions: belong to the Alliance faction and have the "Apprentice Riding" riding skill or higher.
- Make sure your character belongs to the Alliance faction. Gryphon mounts are not available to Horde characters
- Learn the riding skill if you haven't already. Apprentice Riding is available from level 10
- Save up 100 gold (the price may be reduced to 80 gold if you have reputation discounts with the vendor)
- Visit one of the vendors listed below
- Purchase the
Swift Purple Gryphon and use the item to learn the mount
Vendors and Their Locations
| Vendor | Location | Zone |
|---|---|---|
| Tannec Stonebeak | Gryphon Roost | Stormwind |
| Grunda Bronzewing | Honor Hold | Hellfire Peninsula |
| Brunn Flamebeard | Wildhammer Stronghold | Shadowmoon Valley |
| Durgan Thunderbeak | Valiance Keep | Borean Tundra |
| Mei Francis | Dalaran | Northrend / Broken Isles |
The most convenient vendor for most players is Tannec Stonebeak in Stormwind. He is located in the Gryphon Roost next to the flight master.
How to Reach the Vendors
Stormwind — Tannec Stonebeak
The most accessible option. Use your hearthstone if it is set to Stormwind, or a portal from any major Alliance city.
- Arrive in Stormwind
- Head to the Gryphon Roost — it is located in the northeastern part of the city
- Tannec Stonebeak stands next to the flight master
Hellfire Peninsula — Grunda Bronzewing
- Use the portal from Stormwind to Outland (the Dark Portal)
- Travel to Honor Hold on the Hellfire Peninsula
- Grunda Bronzewing is located next to the flight master within the keep
Dalaran — Mei Francis
- Use your hearthstone (if it is set to Dalaran) or a portal
- Mei Francis is an exotic mount vendor located near the flight master in Dalaran
Tips
Buy in Stormwind — Tannec Stonebeak is the most conveniently located. There is no need to fly to Outland or Northrend if you are in the Eastern Kingdoms
Check your reputation — some vendors offer a discount if you have high reputation with the corresponding faction. This can lower the price from 100 to 80 gold
Learn Expert Riding — without this skill the mount cannot fly. If you are buying the gryphon for flying, invest in training first
The mount is account-bound — buy it once and use it on all your Alliance characters. There is no point in buying a gryphon on every alt
Build your collection — if you are aiming for mount-count achievements, all seven gryphons cost 450 gold in total (three regular ones at 50 and four swift ones at 100). It is one of the cheapest ways to add several mounts to your collection at once
