Tail Spike — Transmog Set Guide
Overview

Tail Spike is a one-handed dagger of rare quality that entered the game back in the original World of Warcraft. It is a short blade with a curved, bony silhouette: the model looks like a sharpened spike, as if torn from the tail of a reptile, which directly references the item's source — an ancient saurolisk from the Wailing Caverns.
The main appeal of the Tail Spike is its primitive, almost primeval look. The bone texture and dark palette make the dagger an excellent choice for the look of a savage, a hunter, or a shaman far removed from shiny metal blades.
Source
The Tail Spike drops from an elite boss named Skum — a massive saurolisk dwelling in the Wailing Caverns dungeon.
- The source type is a drop from a dungeon boss; a group is not needed for a modern player, as everything can be cleared solo.
- The drop chance of the Tail Spike from Skum is around 32%, one of the highest rates among transmog daggers of this rank.
- There is no attempt limit: the dungeon can be reset as many times in a row as you like until the desired appearance drops.
- Skum himself is found in the watery part of the dungeon, by a small lake. The boss's spawn point is at the coordinates

The Wailing Caverns is a Horde dungeon located in the Northern Barrens, in an oasis to the southwest of the Crossroads. The entrance is shaped like an enormous skull carved into the rock. The fastest route for the Horde is to reach the Crossroads and descend to the oasis; Alliance players find it easier to fly to Ratchet and then move west. Through Timewalking, the dungeon opens in the level 8-30 range, but a max-level character enters it without restrictions and clears it in a couple of minutes.
Who it suits visually
- It suits wild-nature looks — sets of leather and fur where a metal blade would look out of place.
- It harmonizes with a dark-green and earthy armor palette — for example, with many of the starter leather sets of the Northern Barrens.
- It fits shaman or druid concepts that lean on natural and bone motifs instead of forged weaponry.
- It looks good paired with another primitive dagger for the look of a savage rogue wielding two short blades.
- It contrasts with plate armor — a debatable but memorable combination for the look of a "rough warrior with a trophy fang."
Tips
The farm is as simple as it gets: a max-level character kills Skum in a few seconds, so it is enough to run into the dungeon, head to the lake, and check the drop.
If the appearance does not drop on the first try, leave the dungeon, reset it through the menu, and enter again — the reset takes less than a minute.
Skum drops only this transmog dagger, so there is no need to be distracted by other points of the dungeon for the sake of the Tail Spike — head straight to the boss.
It is most convenient to farm on a class with high movement speed and dashes: the path from the entrance to the lake with Skum is covered faster.
The appearance is counted in your appearance collection right after obtaining the item, after which the dagger itself can be sold or destroyed.
The dungeon is open to both factions; there are no faction restrictions for farming the appearance.
If you are also collecting other appearances from the Wailing Caverns, it makes sense to run the dungeon fully — other low-level transmog items drop along the way.
