Get The Dusk Blade

The Dusk Blade is an epic one-handed dagger added to World of Warcraft with the Wrath of the Lich King expansion (patch 3.0.3). It is a short, straight blade in a cold bluish-steel hue with a dark grip wrapping. The weapon model is understated, with no glowing effects or ornate details — it is precisely this restraint that makes the dagger a versatile transmog piece for stealthy, "shadowy" looks.

The blade belongs to the dagger category and suits all classes that can wield this weapon type: rogues, druids, mages, warlocks, priests, shamans, and demon hunters. Its appearance is recorded account-wide in the transmogrification collection, so you only need to obtain it once on any suitable character.

The dagger's main appeal is its rarity. The Dusk Blade cannot be bought from a vendor and does not drop from a specific boss: it is hidden inside a locked box that still has to be opened. Because of this, the item is prized by collectors and is rarely seen in the game. Do not confuse it with the similarly named The Twilight Blade — that is a different Cataclysm-era dagger with its own source, even though the model looks identical.

The Dusk Blade has a small chance to lie inside the Reinforced Junkbox — a locked container that rogues obtain by pickpocketing humanoids.

The path to the dagger involves two steps:

• Acquire the Reinforced Junkbox itself. A rogue does this with the Pick Pocket ability, searching humanoid enemies. The boxes drop from humanoids of Northrend levels, so it is convenient to farm them in zones of that expansion.
• Open the box. The locked container is opened with a rogue's lockpicking skill or with skeleton keys. If you do not have your own rogue, the box can be given to another player or put up on the auction house — any rogue with sufficient skill can open it.

Good spots for pickpocketing humanoids in Northrend:

• Icecrown, the vrykul village of Ymirheim in the center of the zone. The dense buildings and large packs of vrykul let you constantly move on to new targets and pull boxes one after another.
• Sholazar Basin, the camps of bandits and zombified humanoids by the rift. Convenient because the mobs are placed in dense groups and respawn quickly.
• Borean Tundra, the camps of troll and northern tribes along the coast. Suitable as a starting point if your rogue has not yet unlocked Northrend's central zones.

Blizzard has not published the exact drop chance of the dagger from the box — sources describe it as "low," estimated by players at around 0.1%. It takes hundreds and thousands of opened boxes to get a drop, so farming this item is a long-haul endeavor. Many collectors prefer not to farm the dagger themselves, but to buy a ready Reinforced Junkbox or The Dusk Blade itself on the auction house.

The dagger is bind on equip, so it can be freely traded and sold until it is equipped. Alongside it, the same box drops the Krol Cleaver and the Spineslicer at the same low odds.

The Dusk Blade is not the only dagger with this model. The game has a whole family of blades with an identical appearance: all of them are hidden in locked boxes that rogues obtain by pickpocketing, but across different expansions. For transmog their appearance is the same, so any of them will do.

All four blades are extremely rare, and none of them farms quickly. If the goal is precisely this silhouette in transmog, it is sensible to keep an eye on all four items on the auction house and grab whichever turns up cheaper: their appearance is one and the same.

• The cold bluish-steel hue of the blade makes the dagger a strong choice for stealthy "shadow" rogue looks and for sets in a dark-blue and gray palette.
• The understated model with no glow looks good paired with cloth and leather sets in muted tones, without drawing attention to itself.
• The dagger harmonizes with the gear of Shadow priests and warlocks — the restrained blade complements the grim theme without unnecessary shine.
• Dual-wielding two identical blades from this family gives a neat, symmetrical look for a rogue or demon hunter.
• The simple silhouette suits roleplay and "realistic" builds where bright fantasy weaponry clashes with the overall style.
