The Night Blade — Transmog Set Guide
Overview

The Night Blade is an epic-quality one-handed dagger added to World of Warcraft with the The Burning Crusade expansion. It is a short blade of dark, almost ink-black steel with a cold violet-blue glow running along the edge — the model directly evokes the motif of night and twilight built into its name.
The dagger is not bound on pickup: it becomes soulbound only when equipped. That means a looted copy can be passed within your guild, sold on the auction house, or sent to another character on your account. For a transmog collector, something else matters more — the appearance unlocks in the wardrobe for any class able to wield daggers, no matter who actually obtained the item.
The dagger has its own effect —
Night's End: your attacks have a chance to grant a stacking boost to critical strike chance, building up to three times. At max level this stat lost any combat value long ago, so today The Night Blade is interesting purely as a transmog appearance.
Source
The Night Blade is a so-called world drop from the The Burning Crusade era. It has no single guaranteed owner: the dagger drops from a large number of Outland mobs and from the Karazhan raid with a very low chance. There is no boss lockout, so you can farm it as much as you like.
The most convenient and reliable source is the ghosts inside the Karazhan raid. The best rates among all mobs come from two types of spectral creatures:
- Arcane Shadow — drop chance around 0.07%.
- Restless Soul — drop chance around 0.06%.
These ghosts populate the halls of Karazhan and pack together well, letting you kill them in bunches. An additional bonus of the raid: the trash near the first boss Midnight respawns roughly every 25 minutes as long as Attumen the Huntsman himself is not killed. If you leave the boss alone, the spectral enemies keep reappearing, and you can farm in loops without fully clearing the raid.
There are also ground sources out in the open world and in Outland dungeons:
- In the The Botanica dungeon the dagger drops from Bloodwarder Falconer and Netherweb Reaper.
- On the Isle of Quel'Danas the item drops from the Dawnblade Summoner.
The chance from any single mob is measured in hundredths of a percent, so clearing the dense ghost packs in Karazhan is by far the fastest method. A full max-level raid is soloed without trouble, so there are effectively no limits on attempts — the farm comes down to patience alone.
Alternatives
If you can't see the The Night Blade farm through to the end, note this: its 3D model is shared by several other items in the game. By unlocking the appearance from any of them, you get the same look in your wardrobe — visually these are absolutely identical daggers.
| Item | Quality | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Epic | The base item of this guide, The Burning Crusade era. | |
| Epic | A dagger of the same model from the Wrath of the Lich King era. | |
| Epic | A dagger of the same model from the Mists of Pandaria era. |
All three daggers share the exact same appearance, so for your transmog collection it's enough to obtain any one of them. If the hunt for a single item drags on, it makes sense to switch to another source of the same model.
Who It Suits Visually
- The dark steel with its cold violet-blue glow fits looks built on night and shadow themes — great for rogues, demon hunters, and Shadow priests.
- The dagger harmonizes with sets in a black-and-purple palette: for example, it pairs nicely with cloth and leather armor in dusky and shadowy tints.
- A matched pair of two identical blades looks cohesive — the model suits specs that wield two daggers at once.
- Thanks to its compact silhouette, the blade doesn't overload a look and works as a tidy accent rather than a massive weapon.
- It stands out against bright, golden sets — a debatable but expressive combination for those who build a look around contrast.
Tips
1
The optimal route is to enter Karazhan solo at max level and kill the ghosts in bunches without touching Attumen the Huntsman: the trash will respawn roughly every 25 minutes.
2
It's most convenient to farm with classes that have strong area damage and good mobility — that way the ghost packs are mowed down faster.
3
The Night Blade is not bound on pickup, so an extra copy can be sold on the auction house or sent to another character on your account.
4
The drop chance is extremely low — budget several runs for the farm and don't count on a quick result.
5
Besides the dagger, the Karazhan ghosts drop plenty of other epic items from the The Burning Crusade era — the farm almost always pays off with incidental transmog and gold.
6
If the hunt drags on, switch to
Twilight Blade or
Dusk Blade — they use the same model, and the appearance counts toward your wardrobe just the same.
7
Check your wardrobe after every run: you only need to obtain an item of the desired appearance once for the look to unlock forever.
