Tiriosh, Nightmare of Ages — Transmog Set Guide
Overview

Tiriosh, Nightmare of Ages is a legendary one-handed dagger worn in the off hand. It is the second half of the Fangs of the Father set: its paired main-hand dagger is
Golad, Twilight of Aspects. Both blades use the same 3D model, differing only in the hand slot.
Visually, it is a dark, curved blade with a serrated edge and a draconic hilt in a crimson-and-black palette. The theme harks back to the Black Dragonflight and the corruption of the Old Gods — the blades are literally forged from a shard of Deathwing's jaw. When the set bonus builds up, ghostly dark wings unfurl behind the rogue — this is part of the combat animation, not a separate transmog visual.
The dagger was added to World of Warcraft in patch 4.3 of the Cataclysm expansion as one of that era's legendary rewards. As of patch 8.3, the appearance of the Fangs of the Father can be applied through transmogrification, and it remains available only to rogues — the only class able to complete the corresponding quest chain.
Source
The dagger cannot be looted directly from a boss — it is granted as a reward for the final quest of a long legendary chain. The source is a quest, not a drop.
- Only a rogue can begin the chain; for other classes the appearance is fundamentally unavailable.
- The starting quest is Proving Your Worth. It is given by an NPC right at the entrance to the Dragon Soul raid.
- The first step of the chain is to steal a cipher's decryption ring from Hagara the Stormbinder, the raid's fourth boss.
- The full chain consists of 13 quests and is tied to a story about the black dragon Wrathion and his search for allies among rogues.
- Over the course of the chain, the weapon goes through three stages: the epic daggers
Fear and
Vengeance, then
The Sleeper and
The Dreamer, and only in the finale the legendary Golad, Twilight of Aspects and Tiriosh, Nightmare of Ages. - The final quest is Patricide: you must defeat Deathwing in the Madness of Deathwing encounter and claim the
Fragment of Deathwing's Jaw. - Gathering reagents for the penultimate quest Sharpening Your Fangs is only possible in normal or heroic 10- or 25-player Dragon Soul: the needed gems do not drop in Raid Finder.
- On 25-player, bosses give up to three gems instead of one, so a larger group size noticeably speeds up the step with 60 gems.
- The chain itself is one-time per character, but once obtained the appearance is unlocked in the transmog collection and available to any rogue on the account.
Today Dragon Soul is cleared by a small group or solo at the current level, so the main limitation is the length of the chain itself and the need for several raid runs, not the difficulty of the fights.
Alternatives
The Tiriosh, Nightmare of Ages dagger has no color variations: the model is unique and is not reused on other items. The closest "variant" in spirit is its paired blade from the same set. Daggers with a similar dark draconic theme should be sought among the loot of Cataclysm-era raids.
| Item | Source | Wowhead |
|---|---|---|
| Golad, Twilight of Aspects | Fangs of the Father quest chain, main hand |
If you want the full legendary look, both daggers of the set come from the same chain — there is no need to farm the second blade separately.
Who It Suits Visually
- Pairs well with rogue outfits in a dark crimson palette — looks built around the Black Dragonflight and corruption themes.
- Harmonizes with Cataclysm raid armor, especially with sets from the Dragon Soul-era item level.
- Fits "assassin from the shadows" looks: black leather armor with red or purple accents emphasizes the blade's serrated silhouette.
- Contrasts strikingly with light and gilded outfits — a debatable but expressive choice for those who want a single dark accent.
- This is a status transmog: a legendary weapon from the classic era is immediately read by experienced players as a sign that the character completed a legendary quest chain.
Tips
The appearance unlocks only after obtaining the dagger itself — complete the Fangs of the Father chain fully, up to the quest Patricide.
Plan for several Dragon Soul runs: the chain's reagents drop from the raid's bosses, and you usually can't collect them all in a single run.
Raid Finder is not suitable for this chain — take Dragon Soul on normal or heroic mode.
For the Sharpening Your Fangs step it is more convenient to go 25-player: bosses drop up to three Elementium gems instead of one, and 60 of them are gathered faster.
The most labor-intensive stage at the start is stealing the ring from Hagara the Stormbinder: you need to reach her as the raid's fourth boss.
Having obtained the legendary blades, you simultaneously unlock the transmog of both items of the set — both the off-hand Tiriosh, Nightmare of Ages and the main-hand Golad, Twilight of Aspects.
Completing the chain counts toward the A Legendary Collection achievement — a pleasant bonus for collectors of legendary weapons.
At the current level the raid is cleared quickly, so the time limitation is the length of the quest chain, not the boss fights.
If your goal is only the appearance, remember that the class is strictly limited: the Fangs of the Father can be worn and transmogrified exclusively by a rogue.

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
