Rampaging Yak
Overview

Tuft of Yak Fur is a consumable item from the Mists of Pandaria expansion that, when used, summons the
Rampaging Yak — a temporary speed mount. It is not a permanent mount in your collection, but a chargeable item in your inventory: after using it you get 20 seconds of furious speed on the back of a giant yak, after which the effect ends.
The item was added in patch 5.0.4 as a fun gift to players exploring Pandaria. The flavor text references the movie "Despicable Me": "It's a very, very fast mount." It can only be used within Pandaria, so it offers no practical benefit in other locations — it is a collectible curiosity and a speed utility for getting around old zones.
Since the hotfix of June 3, 2024, the Tuft of Yak Fur is no longer unique and now stacks, allowing you to keep a supply of charges right in your bag.
Why you want this item
- Collectible rarity — an unusual mount item for players collecting everything related to Pandaria.
- Fast travel around Pandaria — the Rampaging Yak moves significantly faster than a standard ground mount, which is handy when farming old zones, rare mobs, and achievements.
- Stacks in your bag — after the 2024 hotfix you can store dozens of charges and use the item as often as you like.
- 100% guaranteed drop — the main source always gives the item on the first kill, with no need to rely on random chance.
- Easter egg and joke — the "Despicable Me" description makes the item one of the most recognizable trinkets of MoP.
How to obtain
The main and fastest way is to fly to the Townlong Steppes and kill the rare yak Pengsong. The Tuft of Yak Fur drops from him with a 100% chance, and the mob itself has a short respawn time — if someone killed it before you, just wait a few minutes.
- Head to the Townlong Steppes. Pandaria can be reached via the portals in Stormwind and Orgrimmar (for characters who have already been there) or through the Chromie / Cronus system when choosing the Mists of Pandaria expansion.
- Move to the southeastern part of the zone, to the Mason's Folly location. This is a raised ledge to the west of the Sumprushes. You can climb up via the main road or the steep trail next to Elder Angler Ju Lien.
- Find the white yak named Pengsong. It is an elite level 35 mob, but at level 80 it is killed instantly.
- Kill Pengsong. He is guaranteed to drop the
Tuft of Yak Fur. - If the yak is not at the spot — wait a few minutes, it respawns quickly.
Alternative farming on the Timeless Isle
If you often visit the Timeless Isle, you can pick up extra Tufts of Yak Fur along the way. Any wild yak on the island has a small chance to drop this item. This method is less reliable than killing Pengsong, but it is great for those who are farming the island anyway for other goals — rare mobs, chests, currency.
- Yaks on the Timeless Isle have a mass respawn and are killed in a couple of seconds at max level
- The chance is small, but over an hour of farming you can gather several charges
- This is the only way to get the item outside the Townlong Steppes
How to use the item
After you obtain it, the Tuft of Yak Fur stays in your bag. Using it works with a single press.
- Make sure you are within Pandaria. In other locations the item will not activate
- Place the
Tuft of Yak Fur on your quick-access bar - Use the item — you will instantly transform into the
Rampaging Yak for 20 seconds - While the spell is active, cover the maximum distance
- When the effect ends, the item goes on a 3-second cooldown and can be used again if you have more charges
When to use
- Crossing large open zones of Pandaria
- A quick dash between rare mobs while farming achievements
- Just for fun and the atmosphere of the old expansion
Tips and tricks
- Stock your bag with charges in advance — after the 2024 hotfix the item stacks, so on a single trip to Pengsong you can gather several if you fly back to him every few minutes.
- Combine with other goals in the Townlong Steppes — alongside farming Pengsong, grab the zone's chests, rare mobs, and expansion achievements
- Don't waste charges outside Pandaria — the item simply won't work, and you'll lose time on the attempt.
- Flying characters benefit more — at level 80 with a regular flying mount the Rampaging Yak gives a noticeable boost only on the ground; but in zones where flight is limited (for example, certain scenarios), the effect becomes noticeable.
- Alternative on the Timeless Isle — if you are farming rare mobs and chests on the island anyway, every yak you kill gives extra chances at the item without any extra time spent.
- It's not a collectible mount — the Tuft of Yak Fur is not added to the mount journal and is not account-bound. You need to obtain the item on each character separately if you want to use it.
- A bonus for hunters — Pengsong can be tamed as a pet of the "oxen" family; he keeps his original name after taming.
