Ulthalesh, the Deadwind Harvester — Transmog Set Guide

Ulthalesh, the Deadwind Harvester is a two-handed staff, the warlock artifact weapon for the Affliction specialization from the Legion expansion. It is an ancient scythe-staff of dark wood with a skull-shaped finial and the greenish glow of Fel, forged to harvest souls. According to the lore, the weapon passed from one keeper to another under the sway of Sataiel and is tied to the order of the Council of the Black Harvest.

Today the staff is of interest purely as a transmog. The model itself and its tints remain among the most recognizable warlock appearances: the grim silhouette of the scythe looks great on dark cloth sets. Below we break down how to obtain the artifact now and how to unlock every available appearance and tint.

Ulthalesh is granted during the warlock campaign in Legion. To begin, you need to choose the Affliction specialization and speak with the mentor Calydus in the class hall. The chain that follows leads you along the trail of the Dark Riders through Duskwood and the catacombs of Karazhan, where after defeating your foe you claim the demonic scythe.

The artifact has several appearances, and each appearance has four color tints. They are unlocked in different ways.

• The base appearance (classic) is granted together with the artifact itself, and its additional tints are unlocked by progressing through the class hall campaign and by spending artifact power.
• The upgraded appearance is unlocked by completing the warlock's main class hall campaign.
• The Balance of Power appearance is granted for the long quest line of the same name within the Suramar storyline and for earning the Improving on History achievement; the additional tints require raids and challenging trials.
• The PvP appearance is granted through PvP: the base look unlocks at Honor level 10, and the other three tints unlock at Honor levels 30, 50, and 80.
• The hidden "End of Fate" appearance is tied to the ritual of Sataiel (see below).

The hidden appearance is obtained as follows. First, The Grimoire of the First Necrolyte drops from eredar minions in the Faronaar area of the Azsuna zone. Then, along this chain, you need to collect 13 Skull of the Executed items from rare humanoid elite mobs across the Broken Isles. With 13 skulls, you perform a ritual at the Executioner's Altar in Deadwind Pass, summon Sataiel, and after the victory you claim the Essence of the Executioner, which unlocks the hidden appearance.
