Umbral Artist's Chisel — Transmog Set Guide

Overview

Umbral Artist's Chisel is a one-handed dagger of uncommon quality, added to World of Warcraft alongside the Delves system in The War Within expansion. It is a short blade with an artisan look: the narrow edge resembles a stonecutter's chisel, while the dark hilt with muted glow betrays its "underground" origin. The model belongs to the Delver's weapon set — a series of items styled around the tools and gear of the delvers of Khaz Algar.

The dagger occupies the one-handed weapon slot and suits every specialization that uses daggers: rogues, druids, shamans, warlocks and mages. Its combat stats are modest (item level 80), so the real value of Umbral Artist's Chisel is purely cosmetic. Once obtained, the appearance is saved permanently to your account's appearance collection and is available for transmogrification on any character.

Among the three daggers in the set, this version stands out with its cold, dark coloring — hence the "umbral" in its name. If you are putting together an ensemble for grim or underground looks, the blade fits the concept effortlessly.

Source

The main way to get Umbral Artist's Chisel is by progressing the Delver's Journey. This is a seasonal progress track that you fill by completing Delves in The War Within. The dagger unlocks once you reach the required rank on the Delver's Journey — and it counts toward progress in any of the seasons: the first, second or third. This means the item is not tied to one specific season and remains available as long as you are leveling the track.

What is important to know about this source:

  • Progress on the Delver's Journey is earned by completing Delves of any difficulty.
  • It is convenient to track your rank and claim rewards through the Delver's Dossier — the Delves journal in the group-finder interface.
  • The appearance unlocks once per account, so there is no need to farm it again on other characters.
  • The dagger becomes soulbound on pickup and cannot be sold or traded — but for transmog that does not matter.

There is also a second, far less reliable path. Umbral Artist's Chisel can drop from the boss Drill-Boss — a goliath in a mech from the "Demolition Dome" delve in the Sinkhole. The drop chance is extremely low, around 0.06%, so counting on the boss as a steady source is not worth it. For most players, progressing the Delver's Journey is the only sensible option.

Alternatives

Umbral Artist's Chisel has a direct recolor of the same dagger model, as well as "related" items from the same Delver's weapon set. They all unlock through the Delver's Journey and share a single style.

Item Type Source
Umbral Artist's Chisel Dagger Delver's Journey
Lapidary's Gemcutter Dagger Delver's Journey
Trailblazer's Stonecutter Sword Delver's Journey

Lapidary's Gemcutter is the same blade model in a lighter coloring, a direct alternative if the dark variant does not fit the look. Trailblazer's Stonecutter echoes the stonecutter-tool theme, but it is a one-handed sword — handy if the set is being assembled outside of a dagger specialization.

Who It Suits Visually

  • Looks that lean on dark, muted tones: the blade harmonizes with black and dark-gray leather armor without bright accents.
  • Concepts of an "underground" explorer or stonecutter — the dagger looks like a working tool rather than a ceremonial weapon.
  • Ensembles in the style of The War Within Delver gear sets: the item is specifically designed around this theme and does not stand out from it.
  • A paired look with Lapidary's Gemcutter: two daggers of the same model in different colors look like a deliberate contrast rather than a random mix.
  • Minimalist builds for a rogue or druid, where you need an understated blade with no glow or effects.

Tips

1

There is no need to farm the dagger separately — it will unlock on its own as you complete Delves normally, as long as you move the Delver's Journey even a little.

2

Check your progress through the Delves journal: it shows at which rank each reward of the weapon set unlocks.

3

Completion counts toward any season, so if you skipped one season, you can earn the rank in the next one without losing access to the item.

4

Delver's weapon set appearances unlock in groups — by filling the track for Umbral Artist's Chisel, you will also collect Lapidary's Gemcutter and other items in the series along the way.

5

It is not worth going for the Drill-Boss for this dagger: a drop chance of around 0.06% makes farming pointless, and the fight itself is tuned for a high gear level.

6

The appearance is saved account-wide, so it is enough to unlock the dagger once on any character that runs Delves.

7

If you want the lighter variant of the same model, plan to get Lapidary's Gemcutter right away — it unlocks on the same Delver's Journey.
