Umber Ruinstrider
Overview

Reins of the Umber Ruinstrider is a ground mount added to World of Warcraft in the Legion expansion (patch 7.3.0 "Shadows of Argus," August 29, 2017). It is a dark-brown war talbuk with chitinous growths along its back and demonic horns. According to lore, the talbuks of Argus evolved under the influence of demonic magic, growing tough armor to survive in the war-ravaged homeworld of the eredar.
The mount is sold by the quartermaster of the Argussian Reach faction for 10,000 gold. A standing of Exalted is required to buy it. The same vendor sells a total of six Ruinstriders in different colorations — they differ only in color, while the model and stats are identical.
Why you want this mount
- Collection value — one of six Argussian Reach Ruinstriders. By collecting all six, you advance toward the meta-achievements for mount count and earn collector bonuses.
- Unique talbuk model — Argus Ruinstriders differ from Draenor talbuks with their massive chitinous armor and large demonic horns. No other ground mount in the game shares this model.
- Speed on par with the best ground mounts — +60% or +100% movement speed depending on your riding skill. It travels just as fast as any other ground mount.
- Available account-wide — once purchased, the mount unlocks for every character on your account regardless of faction and class.
- Part of the Argus journey — obtaining the mount goes through the patch 7.3 story campaign. Along the way you will unlock the Lightforged Draenei allied race (through the Army of the Light) and earn Argus achievements.
Requirements and prerequisites
To reach the quartermaster and buy the mount, you will need:
- Character level: technically level 10 to use the mount. The Argus storyline in the current patch scales to any level and is soloed at level 80 without difficulty.
- Argus unlocked: you need to complete the Legion intro campaign on the Broken Isles, finish the Assault on the Broken Shore, and start the patch 7.3 campaign with the quest A Beautiful World from Prophet Velen in Dalaran.
- The Vindicaar ship: activates automatically when you start the patch 7.3 story — it is where the vendor is based.
- Progress through Argus zones: world quests and reputation sources open up gradually as you complete the story chapters in Krokuun, Mac'Aree, and the Antoran Wastes.
How to reach the quartermaster
The vendor is located on the upper deck of the Vindicaar — the flying draenei ship hovering over Argus.
- Open the map of the Broken Isles and select Argus, then the Vindicaar.
- Use the portal from Dalaran to the Vindicaar. If the ship is not yet available, first complete the intro quest chain of patch 7.3 from Prophet Velen.
- Climb up to the upper deck of the Vindicaar.
- Find Toraan the Revered — coordinates roughly 68, 56 on the ship's interior map.
Step-by-step acquisition guide
1. Unlock Argus and the Vindicaar
If you have not been to Argus yet, start by meeting Prophet Velen in Dalaran. He gives a quest that launches the patch 7.3 campaign. The first chapter takes you to Krokuun — the starting zone of Argus, and activates the Vindicaar as your base.
2. Complete the first story chapters
Reputation with the Argussian Reach opens up gradually, through the story of each of the three zones:
- Krokuun — complete the chapter The Child of Light and Shadow. Unlocks part of the world quests in Krokuun.
- Mac'Aree — complete the chapter The Sigil of Awakening. Unlocks world quests in Mac'Aree.
- Antoran Wastes — complete the chapter The Burning Heart. Grants access to the final weekly quests.
Completing all three chapters takes a few hours depending on your pace.
3. Earn reputation with the Argussian Reach
The main reputation sources:
| Source | Reputation amount | Note |
|---|---|---|
| World quest in Krokuun, Mac'Aree, or the Antoran Wastes | 75 | Rotate daily, 5–10 per day |
| Weekly quest Fuel of a Doomed World | 250 | Gathering nethershards on Argus |
| Weekly dungeon quest The Seat of the Triumvirate | 250 | For defeating L'ura |
| 75 | Reward from advisor table missions | |
| Greater Argussian Reach Insignia | 750 | Rare advisor table reward |
4. Buy the mount from Toraan
When you have Exalted with the Argussian Reach and 10,000 gold, head up to the Vindicaar, open the trade window with Toraan the Revered and buy the
Reins of the Umber Ruinstrider. The mount goes straight into your collection and becomes available to all characters on your account.
Collection of Argus Ruinstriders
Along with the umber one, Toraan sells five more talbuk colorations. They all cost 10,000 gold each and require Exalted.
| Mount | Color |
|---|---|
| Sable/black | |
| Russet-chestnut | |
| Purple | |
| Green | |
| Umber | |
| Blue |
If you want to collect all six, set aside 60,000 gold. You only need to grind reputation up to Exalted once — all the Ruinstriders are available from a single vendor.
Optimizing reputation farming
Priority order of actions
- On reset day, complete the weekly quests Fuel of a Doomed World and the Seat of the Triumvirate quest — that is a guaranteed 500 reputation.
- Open the Argus map and pick up all available Argussian Reach world quests. Each gives 75 reputation (or 150 during a Legion reputation bonus week).
- Use accumulated
Argussian Reach Insignia from the Vindicaar advisor table — they are stored in your bags and grant reputation instantly. - Check the "Paragon" window — after Exalted, every 10,000 reputation points grants an extra chest.
Class tips
- Best classes for farming on Argus — demon hunter and monk, thanks to their high mobility and fast cross-zone movement
- Tanks and melee of any class clear quests quickly — Argus enemies are technically level 110, and at level 80 in the current patch they die in 1–2 hits
- For moving between Argus points, use the
Krokul Flute if you received it from Paragon chests
Approximate time to obtain
From scratch to Exalted with the Argussian Reach takes roughly 2–3 weeks with daily play, completing all world quests and weeklies. If you play less often — a month and a half to two months. On leveled characters with zones already unlocked, reputation accumulates faster thanks to access to all world quests at once.
Tips
Don't skip the weeklies — 500 reputation from two quests is nearly 7 world quests. A missed week noticeably drags out the farm.
Hoard insignia — advisor table missions on the Vindicaar occasionally give rare "greater insignia" worth 750 reputation. Don't open regular insignia right away; keep a stack for reputation bonus events.
Watch for bonus events — WoW regularly runs "Legion Assault" weeks and similar events with +50% reputation with Legion factions. It's best to plan your main farm around them.
Take Army of the Light quests in parallel — Argus world quests often grant reputation with both factions at once. The path to the mount is conveniently combined with unlocking the Lightforged Draenei allied race.
Check all colorations before buying — visit the vendor window and view the options in the preview. You might want to buy a different color from the same line first.
The mount is account-wide after obtaining — as soon as one character gets the
Reins of the Umber Ruinstrider, it appears in the collection of all your characters. You only need to grind reputation and gold once.
