Overview

Unchained Gladiator's Soul Eater

Game iconUnchained Gladiator's Soul Eater is an epic flying mount added in patch 9.1.0 "Chains of Domination" of the Shadowlands expansion. It is a sinister shadow beast with smoldering eyes and a dark aura, crafted in the aesthetic of the Shadowlands. The mount was awarded for the Gladiator: Shadowlands Season 2 achievement — one of the game's most prestigious PvP rewards.

The mount is no longer obtainable. Like all gladiator mounts, the Unchained Gladiator's Soul Eater was only awarded during a specific PvP season. Shadowlands Season 2 ended on February 21, 2022, and from that point on the opportunity to earn the mount has been closed forever. If you see this beast on another player, you are looking at one of the strongest arena players of that season.

Why you should know about this mount

  • A symbol of mastery — the Unchained Gladiator's Soul Eater confirms that its owner earned the Gladiator title in Shadowlands Season 2 by winning at least 50 matches at the elite rating in 3v3.
  • Exceptional rarity — the mount has been permanently removed from the list of available rewards. The number of owners is fixed and can only decrease.
  • Unique coloring — each gladiator Soul Eater in Shadowlands has its own color scheme. The Unchained Gladiator's version differs from the Sinful, Cosmic, and Eternal Gladiator variants.
  • Flying mount — works both on the ground and in the air in all locations where flight is permitted.
  • Account-bound — once obtained, the mount is available to all characters on the player's account.

How it could be obtained

To obtain the mount, you had to complete the Gladiator: Shadowlands Season 2 achievement. The achievement requirements:

  1. Reach the Elite rating (2,400+ personal rating) in 3v3 arena during Shadowlands Season 2
  2. Win at least 50 matches in 3v3 arena while holding Elite status
  3. Both conditions had to be met simultaneously before the season ended

Shadowlands Season 2 ran from July 6, 2021 to February 21, 2022. Once the requirements were met, the achievement and mount were granted automatically, together with the seasonal "Gladiator" title and the Game iconUnchained Gladiator's Soul Eater item.

Requirements and the Elite threshold

The key requirement for obtaining the mount was reaching and holding the Elite rating in 3v3.

Shadowlands rating ranks

Rank Required rating
Challenger 1,400+
Rival 1,600+
Duelist 2,100+
Elite 2,400+

Upon reaching the 2,400 mark, a player gained Elite status. An important feature of the season: Elite status was retained until the rating dropped to 2,370, providing a small buffer against losing the rank during a losing streak. It was while in this status that you needed to win 50 matches to count toward the "Gladiator" achievement.

Why the mount is unavailable

Gladiator mounts are strictly tied to a specific PvP season in order to preserve the prestige of the reward. After the season ends, the mount stops being awarded and cannot be obtained by any alternative means:

  • It cannot be bought with gold, Honor points, or Conquest points
  • It is not sold on the Black Market
  • It does not appear in the in-game Shop
  • It does not transfer between characters and accounts
  • It is not available via WoW Tokens or the Battle.net Shop
  • It is not part of the Game iconReins of the Quantum Courser pool

Unchained Gladiator: a separate title

In addition to the seasonal "Gladiator" title, Shadowlands Season 2 had a special permanent title, Unchained Gladiator, awarded only to players who finished the season in the top 0.1% of 3v3 arena with at least 150 wins for their current faction. This title is not directly linked to the mount, but bears the same adjective ("Unchained"), as it pertains to the elite of the same season.

Thus, the conditions differed:

  • "Gladiator" title + Soul Eater — Elite 2,400+ and 50 wins
  • Permanent "Unchained Gladiator" title — top 0.1% and 150 wins

The mount itself is named precisely "Unchained Gladiator's Soul Eater," since the season's name — "Unchained Gladiators" — is assigned to the entire reward set of Shadowlands Season 2.

All Shadowlands Soul Eaters

The Shadowlands expansion had four PvP seasons, and each of them awarded a unique Soul Eater:

Season Mount Period
Season 1 Game iconSinful Gladiator's Soul Eater December 2020 — June 2021
Season 2 Game iconUnchained Gladiator's Soul Eater July 2021 — February 2022
Season 3 Game iconCosmic Gladiator's Soul Eater March 2022 — August 2022
Season 4 Game iconEternal Gladiator's Soul Eater August 2022 — October 2022

All four mounts use the same base Shadowlands shadow beast model but differ in color palette, armor effects, and glowing elements. Collectors who have gathered the full set own one of the rarest sets of PvP mounts in the game.

Can you get the mount now

No. The Unchained Gladiator's Soul Eater is a reward for a specific seasonal feat, and after February 21, 2022, the Gladiator: Shadowlands Season 2 achievement moved into the category of unobtainable. Blizzard consistently preserves the exclusivity of each season's gladiator mounts and has never once returned them to the game after the corresponding season closed.

If you want to obtain a gladiator mount, you need to participate in the current PvP season of the current expansion and earn the Gladiator title before it ends. Each new season offers its own unique mount with its own model and coloring.

Alternatives

If you liked the Shadowlands shadow beast aesthetic, take a look at the following options:

  • Game iconZovaal's Soul Eater — a reward for the "Back from the Beyond" meta-achievement tied to Shadowlands content. This mount uses the same base model and is still available to players who completed the corresponding chain.
  • Current season's gladiator mount — if it was specifically the PvP aspect that inspired you, each active season of the game offers its own mount for Elite-rank players.
  • Lower-rank rewards — if Elite rank is out of reach for now, start with the mounts and armor for the Rival and Duelist ranks of the current season.

How to reach the Gladiator title in the current season

If you are inspired and want to obtain the current gladiator mount, prepare for serious work:

  1. Assemble a team of three — 3v3 arena is the main format for the gladiator title. You will need two reliable partners with an appropriate skill level and a stable schedule.
  2. Study the current season's meta — team compositions, strong class pairings, and current tactics change from season to season. Watch streams of professional players and review match replays.
  3. Upgrade your PvP gear — get the maximum level of PvP gear through weekly chests and farming Honor and Conquest points.
  4. Reach a rating of 2,400 — this is the Elite threshold. Aim for consistent play rather than one-off rating spikes.
  5. Win 50 matches in Elite status — it is the wins in this status that count toward the "Gladiator" achievement.
  6. Maintain your pace until the end of the season — the title and mount are granted after the results are tallied.

Tips

1

Check your collection — open the mount journal, and in the "PvP" category find the Soul Eaters. If the mount appears grayed out, it means you did not earn it in Shadowlands Season 2 and it can no longer be obtained.

2

Don't trust sale offers — the mount cannot be transferred to another player. Any listings selling this specific Soul Eater are a scam. The only thing you can really buy is a boost in the current season to obtain the current gladiator mount.

3

A Feat of Strength in achievements — owners of the mount are granted a Feat of Strength, which appears in the character's achievements section and serves as permanent confirmation of the accomplishment.

4

The mount works everywhere flight is permitted — the Unchained Gladiator's Soul Eater is a full-fledged flying mount with no location restrictions beyond the general flight rules in current zones.

5

Keep an eye on the current season — if you missed the Shadowlands Season 2 mount, don't put off participating in the current PvP season. Each new season's mount will also become unavailable after it ends.

6

Use thematic transmogrification — the dark coloring of the Soul Eater pairs perfectly with Revendreth, Maldraxxus, and the overall Shadowlands aesthetic.
