Reins of the Winterspring Frostsaber — How to Get the Mount
Winterspring Frostsaber

Reins of the Winterspring Frostsaber is a ground mount available only to Alliance characters. It is a large white saber-toothed cat, one of the most iconic mounts in World of Warcraft. Obtaining the frostsaber once required months of continuous reputation grinding, but after the Cataclysm revamp the process became much simpler: just complete daily quests for 20 days.
Obtaining the mount also awards the achievement Winterspring Frostsaber.
Why Get the Frostsaber
- Unique model — a white saber-toothed cat with blue stripes, one of the few cat mounts in the game
- Alliance exclusive — the Horde has an equivalent, the Venomhide Ravasaur, but the models are completely different
- Achievement — upon getting the mount you automatically earn the achievement Winterspring Frostsaber (Feats of Strength category)
- Collecting — the mount counts toward the total mount counter for meta-achievements
- Historical value — before patch 4.1 this was one of the hardest mounts in the game, requiring weeks of reputation grinding with the Wintersaber Trainers faction
Requirements
| Requirement | Value |
|---|---|
| Faction | Alliance only |
| Minimum level | 10 |
| Riding skill | Apprentice (first rank) |
| Quest prerequisites | None |
| Time to obtain | Minimum 20 days |
| Cost | 80 gold (part of the final quest) |
Technically you can start earning the mount at level 10, but all quests are located in Winterspring — a Kalimdor zone for characters level 15–30. At high level the entire zone is trivial.
How to Get to Winterspring
Winterspring is a snowy zone in northeastern Kalimdor. You can get there in several ways:
Fastest option — flight:
- From Stormwind use the portal to Dalaran (portal room) or to Orgrimmar/Exodar
- Fly to the Everlook flight point in Winterspring — if it is already discovered
- If the flight point is not discovered — fly directly across Kalimdor; a flying mount will reach the zone in a couple of minutes
Alternative ground route:
- Travel to Felwood in northern Kalimdor
- In the northeastern part of Felwood find the entrance to Timbermaw Hold
- Pass through the tunnel — you will emerge in Winterspring
Previously passing through Timbermaw Hold required neutral reputation with the furbolgs, but in the current version of the game they do not attack players.
Where to Find Rivern Frostwind
Rivern Frostwind is a night elf frostsaber trainer standing at Frostsaber Rock in the northern part of Winterspring.

From Everlook fly straight north — Frostsaber Rock is at the very top of the map.
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Starting Quest
Speak to Rivern Frostwind and pick up the quest Get Them While They're Young. You need to collect 8 frostsaber cubs in the area around Frostsaber Rock. The cubs run around right next to the NPC — the quest takes a couple of minutes.
Return to Rivern and turn in the quest. As a reward you receive a
Winterspring Cub — an item that summons your pet kitten.
Step 2: Main Quest and Dailies
After turning in the starting quest, Rivern offers the quest They Grow Up So Fast. To complete it you need:
| Material | Quantity | How to Obtain |
|---|---|---|
| 20 | Reward from daily quests (1 per day) | |
| 20 | Skinning or Auction House | |
| 20 | Mob drops or Auction House | |
| Gold | 80 | — |
Whiskers are the key resource that sets the pace for obtaining the mount. You earn exactly 1 whisker per day from the daily quest. Thick Leather and Runecloth can be bought on the Auction House ahead of time.
Step 3: Completing Daily Quests (20 days)
Each day fly to Winterspring and summon your kitten anywhere in the zone. The kitten offers you one random daily quest from four possibilities:
| Quest | ID | What to Do |
|---|---|---|
| Cub's First Meal | 29035 | Kill shardtooth bears in Winterspring and collect 6 pieces of meat. Feed the kitten. |
| Loan from the Winterfall | 29037 | Obtain 6 pieces of smoked meat from Winterfall furbolgs in their camps and feed the kitten. |
| Hunting Practice | 29038 | Lead the kitten to snow-covered burrows in the northern part of Winterspring 5 times so it learns to hunt rabbits. |
| Cub's First Toy | 29040 | Obtain a tough yeti hide and 5 wild owl feathers, craft a toy, and play with the kitten. |
Each completed daily quest awards 1 whisker and 1,500 reputation with the Wintersaber Trainers faction.
Progress is saved even if you skip a day. A continuous streak is not required — just complete the quests at your own pace.
Step 4: Turning In the Final Quest
When you have 20 whiskers, 20 Thick Leather, 20 Runecloth, and 80 gold — return to Rivern Frostwind and turn in the quest They Grow Up So Fast.
As a reward you receive
Reins of the Winterspring Frostsaber. Use the item — the mount is permanently added to your collection.
Tips and Optimization
Optimal daily route:
- Bind your Hearthstone to the inn in Everlook — this lets you quickly return to the zone
- Fly to Winterspring, summon the kitten, pick up the daily quest
- Complete the quest (usually 3–5 minutes), receive a whisker
- Use your Hearthstone or a portal to get back to what you were doing
Best classes for the task:
- Mage — bind your Hearthstone to Everlook, then after completing the quest use a portal to any city. Fastest option.
- Druid — use Dreamwalk to teleport to Moonglade, which is right next to Winterspring. From there fly to the zone in seconds.
- Any class with Engineering — Dimensional Ripper: Everlook teleports you instantly to the right zone (requires Goblin Engineering).
Time to obtain:
- Minimum 20 days if you complete a quest every day
- Each daily quest takes 3 to 10 minutes depending on which one you get
- Total time spent on quests — roughly 2–3 hours over all 20 days
Prepare materials in advance:
Runecloth and Thick Leather can be bought on the Auction House before starting the chain. Both are usually very cheap. This saves time on the last day.
Additional notes:
- The mount is account-bound — once obtained on one character, it is available to all your Alliance alts
- If you have multiple Alliance characters — you only need to complete the chain on one; the mount becomes available to all
- Quests are not tied to a specific time of day — complete them whenever convenient
