WoW Forever Balance Druid — Guide (Beta Test)
About the Class
This guide is based on the World of Warcraft: Forever beta and covers gameplay up to level 20. The talents and combat tips are starting recommendations built on the spells and talents available in the beta. They will be refined as testing continues.
The Balance Druid is a ranged caster who alternates direct damage with damage-over-time effects from the Nature and Arcane schools. On top of that, you bring your group a noticeable Critical Strike buff and play in
Moonkin Form.
Druids are born shapeshifters: besides Moonkin, you have access to
Bear Form to take a couple of hits,
Travel Form and
Aquatic Form for getting around, and
Cat Form with stealth. The class can fill any of the four roles, so there is always a spot for you in a group.
Most of the key talents aren't available in the beta yet, so it's too early to judge the specialization's final damage. But even with average damage, you'll get invited for your buffs.
Strengths
- Long ability range: tagging enemies with
Moonfire is far more convenient than running up to them. - Damage over time and crowd control from
Entangling Roots let you pull more than one enemy. - A useful group toolkit:
Mark of the Wild,
Faerie Fire,
Abolish Poison, and the combat resurrection
Rebirth. - The Critical Strike buff from
Moonkin Form is something only Balance and Feral Combat bring. - If the tank or healer dies in a dungeon, you can fill in for either of them and save the run.
Weaknesses
- A slow start: until you get the first levels and key spells, the specialization takes a long time to get going.
- More downtime spent restoring mana than Feral Combat has.
- Most of the important talents are missing in the beta, so gameplay feels monotonous.
- The AoE spell
Hurricane is only learned at level 40, so you have no AoE damage in the beta. - As a pure ranged DPS, you depend heavily on how the developers tune damage.
Stat Priority
- 1Spell Power
- 2Intellect
- 3Critical Strike
- 4Haste
- 5Spirit
In the beta, the easiest approach is to go by item level: pick higher-level items, favoring Spell Power and Intellect. This is advice for the duration of the test, not a final priority.
Talents
Talent Notes
Eleven points go into the Balance talent tree: cast time, mana cost, and range.
Improved Wrath 5/5 — reduces the cast time and cost of
Wrath. The top pick for the early levels: your effective cast time gets better, and the mana savings are very noticeable.
Moonglow 3/3 — further reduces mana costs, which means less time spent standing around.
Nature's Reach 2/2 — noticeably reduces your miss chance and adds range, making it easier to tag targets with
Moonfire.
Improved Moonfire 1/2 — the last point at level 20; you can spend it fairly freely.
Ability Priority
Hurricane is only learned at level 40, so you won't have proper AoE damage in the beta.
Class Quests
At level 10 your trainer gives you a quest for
Bear Form, and at level 20 one for
Cat Form. The quests are short and atmospheric, and they are worth doing: the bear unlocks
Bash and the ability to tank, while the cat unlocks
Prowl.
Prowl greatly reduces your aggro radius, but it isn't full invisibility: don't stand right next to enemies. It only works out of combat, and enemies with an eye icon above their heads can see you no matter what.
At level 14 a quest for
Cure Poison becomes available. It's also worth completing, because in a group there is often no one else to remove poisons.
Crowd Control
Entangling Roots immobilizes a single target. If the enemy has no allies nearby, it won't even be able to fight back. Damage breaks the effect, so it's handy to root a second enemy while you finish off the first. In Forever it can be used indoors as well.
Bash only works in
Bear Form. It's awkward to use: shifting forms isn't quick, and it costs Rage, which you don't have right after the shift.
Important Abilities
Best in Slot (BiS)
There is no BiS list for the beta yet: gear and item stats have changed noticeably compared to Classic, and loot sources still haven't been mapped out. For now, the most reliable approach is to wear items of the highest level available, favoring Spell Power and Intellect.
Enchants, Gems, Consumables
Campfire Bonuses
Campfires in Forever now grant strong buffs. If you see a campfire, sit down by it: the bonuses are worth it.
Best Professions
A convenient pairing for a Druid: Skinning supplies Leatherworking with materials, and you craft your own gear. Professions in the game are flexible, so this is a recommendation, not a hard rule.
