WoW Forever: Survival Hunter
About the Class
In Forever, the Survival Hunter specializes in melee combat. Its core abilities are
Raptor Strike,
Strider Kick, and
Mongoose Bite, while traps and the pet back up your direct attacks. This is a big departure from the familiar ranged Hunter of Classic.
Predator's Edge empowers melee critical strikes and your off-hand weapon.
Expose Prey gives you access to
Mongoose Bite through attacks on an enemy affected by your
Hunter's Mark. So keep track not only of your cooldowns but also of procs as they appear.
Your resource stays the same: Mana.
Resourcefulness reduces the cost of melee abilities and traps. Until the key talents unlock, it is easier to level with your pet and shots: you do not need to switch fully to melee at low levels.
Strengths
- A self-sufficient melee spec with strong reactive attacks.
- The pet, traps, and ranged abilities remain available.
Strider Kick delivers a direct hit and a brief speed boost.
Resourcefulness helps you sustain your Mana.- You have crowd control and threat-drop tools.
Weaknesses
- Key talents unlock later, so early leveling is less comfortable.
- You have to stay next to the target at all times and deal with melee mechanics.
- AoE damage is limited compared to specs with strong group attacks.
- Some abilities are only available after a dodge or a special proc.
Stat Priority
- 1Melee Weapon Damage
- 2Hit
- 3Critical Strike
- 4Agility
- 5Attack Power
The baseline target against a raid boss is 8% Hit for special attacks.
Surefooted gives 3% in this build, so you usually need to cover the remaining 5% with gear if you have no other sources. When dual-wielding, account for the extra off-hand auto-attack misses separately.
Predator's Edge makes melee critical strikes more valuable. Agility gives Attack Power and Critical Strike, while Intellect increases your Mana pool. In this setup,
Careful Aim is taken at 3/5 and converts 60% of Intellect into Attack Power. Do not apply the max-rank talent value to this build.
Talents
Rotation (Ability Priority)
The opener is a set sequence of abilities you use as you engage an enemy. Memorising it helps initiate your rotation in the most optimal way possible.
- 1
Hunter's Mark - 2
Serpent Sting - 3
Aimed Shot
Hunter's Mark — mark the target at the start of the fight- Your pet attacks first and builds threat
Serpent Sting — on a long-lived target
Aimed Shot — on cooldown
Auto Shot — your main steady damage at no Mana cost
Arcane Shot — an extra shot when you have enough Mana
Disengage — helps reduce threat if an enemy reaches you
Against a group,
Multi-Shot replaces the single-target cast shot. Do not force yourself to stay in melee without the talents that make this playstyle stronger.
Important Abilities
Ability | When It Helps |
|---|---|
| Empowers your next weapon swing | |
| Instant melee attack and a short speed boost | |
| Reactive attack after a dodge or a talent proc | |
| Unlocks the reactive attack when you hit a marked target | |
| Reduces the Mana cost of melee abilities and traps | |
| Crowd control on a suitable enemy | |
| Slows a group | |
| Drops threat and gets you out of a dangerous situation |
The pet remains part of this build. Watch its Health, path, and target, and do not forget pet food and ammo for your ranged fallback.
Best in Slot (BiS)
Enchants, Gems, Consumables
Best Race
Blood Fury temporarily increases Attack Power, and
Command increases pet damage. This is a practical combination for a build that keeps an active pet.
Wind Blessed grants 2% attack speed, and
Skysight helps you get back to the target. These bonuses are useful in many situations; the mobility is especially noticeable when you move between enemies often.
Best Professions
Skinning and
Leatherworking are a convenient pair for a first Hunter. You gather materials from beasts along the way and use them for your own armor. While you skin a defeated target, you can send your pet to the next enemy if it is safe.
Engineering gives you devices, explosives, and weapons.
Mining supplies some of the crafting materials. This pair suits you if you are interested in extra gadgets and PvP.
Among secondary professions,
Cooking is useful for buff food and
First Aid for restoring Health.
FAQ
Should you level in melee only right away?
The key melee talents come later. Early on, playing with your pet and shots is usually easier; use them until you have the core of the melee spec in place.
Why keep the mark up in melee?
Expose Prey works on an enemy affected by
Hunter's Mark and gives you extra chances to use
Mongoose Bite.
Why is the reactive attack sometimes unavailable?
Mongoose Bite requires a dodge or a matching proc from the chosen talent. Having the ability in your spellbook does not mean you can use it at any moment.
Do you need a pet in this build?
Yes, this build takes pet buffs and
Summon Hawk.
Lone Wolf variants use a different talent distribution; their rotation cannot be carried over wholesale to this setup.
Can you keep ranged combat as a fallback?
Yes. Your ranged weapon, shots, and ammo stay useful when closing in is dangerous or the enemy is out of melee range. The main priority of this spec, however, is built around melee attacks.
