Overview

Wyvern Tailspike

Game iconWyvern Tailspike is an uncommon one-handed dagger that appeared in World of Warcraft back in the classic era. It is a short blade with a curved edge the color of darkened bone, its shape genuinely resembling a spike from a wyvern's tail: a narrow base widens toward the middle and tapers to a sharp sting. Its warm, earthy-brown palette and rough, almost primitive finish set it apart from the gleaming metal daggers of later expansions.

The dagger can be wielded by any class with access to this weapon type — rogues, mages, priests, warlocks, druids, demon hunters and shamans. The item level is 80, and it becomes soulbound when equipped.

A distinctive detail is its built-in combat effect, Game iconPoison: on a hit, the blade has a chance to poison the target, dealing nature damage over 15 seconds. At a character's level in the current expansion the effect has almost no impact, but in the transmogrification collection it is preserved as part of the item's character.

Source

The Wyvern Tailspike can be obtained in only one way — it drops from the loot of the rare mob Pridewing Patriarch. This is a large wyvern from the Pridewing flock, flagged as a rare beast, with a level range of 29 to 80 — the mob scales to your character's level.

  • The location is the Stonetalon Mountains, a contested Kalimdor territory for levels 10–30.
  • The Patriarch dwells in the rocky part of the zone, roughly around the coordinates /way 55 45, not far from Mirkfallon Lake.
  • There is a single spawn point, so the mob may already have been killed by another player — in that case you will have to wait for it to respawn.
  • The dagger's drop chance from the Patriarch is about 1.5%, so plan for several runs to be certain of obtaining the appearance.
  • There is no limit on the number of attempts: the mob can be killed as many times as needed, waiting for each respawn.

Note that during the Cataclysm era the mob was temporarily removed from the game and brought back later, so old guides sometimes list an inaccurate spot. The current location is the Stonetalon Mountains.

Who It Suits Visually

  • It harmonizes with leather and fur sets in brown-and-sand tones — for example, with outfits in the style of beast tamers and trackers.
  • It complements a "wild," tribal character look: a wandering shaman, a beast-master druid, a backwoods rogue.
  • It contrasts strikingly when paired with dark mail or plate, adding a touch of the primal to austere armor.
  • It fits themed looks tied to wyverns and the winged predators of Kalimdor.
  • Thanks to the blade's small size, it pairs well with light, agile silhouettes without overloading the character model.

Tips

1

It is best to farm the Patriarch with a high-level character — the rare beast dies in a couple of hits, and the whole run comes down to waiting for the respawn.

2

Before flying out to the Stonetalon Mountains, check your wardrobe: if the dagger's appearance is already unlocked, there is no need to spend time farming.

3

If the Patriarch is not visible at the spot, check the neighboring points in the indicated area and wait — rare mobs have a pronounced respawn timer.

4

Classes with fast movement and area clearing — druid, demon hunter, rogue — complete a circuit of the spawn point noticeably faster.

5

Besides the Patriarch, ordinary Pridewing Wyvern mobs roam the same part of the zone; they do not drop the dagger, but they do not hinder clearing the approaches to the spot.

6

Farming is easier during quiet hours: the single spawn point makes the zone competitive at prime time.

7

The obtained dagger only needs to be placed in your bag or equipped once for the appearance to be permanently added to the transmogrification collection of your entire account.

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
