Aluneth — Transmog Set Guide

Aluneth is a two-handed staff, the artifact weapon of the Arcane mage, added in the Legion expansion. It is far more than a statuette of magical power: a sentient being is bound within the staff, one that speaks to its wielder, demands to be fed mana, and offers caustic commentary on everything around it. Visually, Aluneth appears as a tall rod with a floating crystalline head wreathed in streams of arcane energy — a look that directly evokes the ancient magic of the Guardians of Tirisfal.

In the lore, Aluneth was summoned to Azeroth by the blue dragonflight long before the War of the Ancients, and was later subdued by Magna Aegwynn, the Guardian of her era. Mastering the staff proved harder than taming any demon: Aegwynn devoted years to bridling its power and ultimately sealed Aluneth away, entrusting it to the keeping of the Kirin Tor. In Legion, the staff is granted to a mage player as one of the three artifact weapons of the Arcane specialization.

Today Aluneth is of interest chiefly as a transmog: the weapon itself long ago fell behind current Midnight gear in power, yet its appearances remain among the most recognizable of any mage staff.

Aluneth is awarded over the course of the mage class campaign in Legion. The starting point is the mage class hall, the Hall of the Guardian, set in the upper tiers of the Violet Citadel in Dalaran. The chain is begun by Meryl Felstorm, who restores the order of the Tirisgarde and sends you in search of the staff.

Key steps to obtain it:

• Pick up the quest Aluneth, Greatstaff of the Magna from Meryl Felstorm in the Hall of the Guardian.
• Speak with Kalecgos in the Violet Citadel in Dalaran — he points you toward the traces of the staff's arcane energy.
• Follow the chain through the Dragon Graveyard in the Dragonblight and complete the final scenario, at the end of which the staff passes to you.

This is the longest of the mage's three artifact chains, but it can be done solo and requires no group. Once obtained, the base appearance of Aluneth is unlocked right away.
