Athame of the Sanguine Ritual — Transmog Set Guide
Overview

Athame of the Sanguine Ritual is a one-handed dagger of epic quality, added with patch 5.2 "The Thunder King" of the Mists of Pandaria expansion. Visually it is a short ritual blade with a massive, skewed hilt in the style of the Zandalari trolls and the mogu: the dark metal of the pommel, the bone inlays, and the green-and-purple veins of energy echo the overall visual language of the weapons from the Isle of Thunder.
The item is aimed at classes that use intellect as their primary stat: bonuses to intellect, stamina, haste, and mastery plus a colorless socket for a gem make it a signature caster weapon for priests, warlocks, mages, and healing shamans of the Mists of Pandaria era. For transmog today only the model matters — the icon corresponds to one of the recognizable ritual dagger models from the Throne of Thunder raid.
This entry is the Raid Finder version. The same look and name belong to four more difficulty variants, and all of them unlock the very same model in your transmog collection.
Source
The dagger drops from the boss Dark Animus — the tenth boss of the Throne of Thunder raid on the Isle of Thunder (Mists of Pandaria, patch 5.2).
- The difficulty mode for item 95774 is Raid Finder.
- The drop chance per Wowhead data is about 1.63%.
- Limit: one Raid Finder clear of the raid per week per character.
- Fully soloable at max level: the fight against Dark Animus dies in a few seconds, and the mechanic of the smaller constructs animating and merging into the boss himself is no longer a threat.
- Dark Animus sits in the "Halls of Flesh-Shaping" wing, so before the boss you only have to clear Jin'rokh the Breaker, Horridon, the Council of Elders, Tortos, and Megaera.
- Raid entrance coordinates:
/way 6622 67 49. The fastest route is through the portal to Kun-Lai at the Shrine of Seven Stars and then by teleport to the Isle of Thunder.
Additionally: the "Athame of the Sanguine Ritual" drops only from Dark Animus and not from the wing's general loot, so farming is pinpointed — run to the tenth boss, kill him, grab the item, leave, and reset the instance for the next cycle.
Who it suits visually
- Looks built on the color scheme of the mogu and the Thunder King — dark bronze, bone, and green and crimson ritual veins.
- Tier 15 and 16 sets of the Mists of Pandaria era, which keep the unified styling of the Isle of Thunder and Siege of Orgrimmar raids.
- Dark ritual builds for a shadow priest or a warlock: the blade reads well as a cult artifact thanks to the narrow curves of the edge and the textured hilt.
- Contrast with light cloth robes in pale shades — the dagger works as a noticeable accent in the hand thanks to its massive hilt.
- A paired layout with another ritual dagger from the Throne of Thunder raid in the off-hand for a rogue gives a symmetrical "cultist" silhouette.
Tips
1
The fastest class for the weekly run is any with a mass leap or distance-closing slow: a monk, a demon hunter, a rogue. This cuts the path to the tenth boss down to 5–7 minutes counting the bridges and the transitions between wings.
2
In Raid Finder mode you can pick up the item via a bonus roll: if the dagger did not drop on the main roll, try spending saved valor tokens for an extra attempt.
3
Dark Animus offers two loot-table variants: your roll takes the character's specialization into account, so for targeted dagger farming enter on an intellect specialization (healer or magic damage).
4
Alongside farming the dagger you can collect the boss's other rewards: for transmog, several unique weapon and armor models are available from Dark Animus.
5
If the goal is only the transmog and not the stats, the Raid Finder version is the cheapest by time: Heroic and the Thunderforged version give the visually identical blade but require either a 5.4-era group or targeted farming with a very rare chance.
6
The item binds when picked up; you cannot pass it from an alt to your main — enter right away on the character you need.
7
Once a week for a single instance in Raid Finder: if there is no drop over five or six weeks, it helps to add parallel farming of the normal-mode version 94955 — at max level the raid is soloed in minutes.
