Overview

Barman Shanker

Game iconBarman Shanker is a one-handed dagger that, in reality, looks nothing like a blade but rather like a broken bottle with a jagged neck. This "glass rose" is a quintessential bar weapon: exactly the kind of shard people swing in a tavern brawl. The item description states outright that it is the property of the Grim Guzzler tavern, which sets its entire theme.

The dagger is of rare (blue) quality and has been in the game since launch — it is a classic item obtained in the Blackrock Depths dungeon. Today the item's combat stats are irrelevant: players take it purely for the look. The broken-bottle model is unique and barely appears on any other weapon, so for transmog it remains a recognizable and inexpensive option to farm.

This appearance is especially prized because the item is not unique — you can obtain two copies and wield a broken bottle in each hand. The paired "glass roses" create the image of a tavern bully or a dockside cutthroat that you simply cannot assemble from the standard weapon set.

Source

Barman Shanker drops from the named mob Plugger Spazzring — the owner and barkeeper of the Grim Guzzler tavern. He is not a classic dungeon boss but a vendor who turns hostile if you attack him or if a brawl breaks out in the hall.

  • The dungeon is Blackrock Depths, located deep inside Blackrock Mountain between the Burning Steppes and the Swamp of Sorrows.
  • The Grim Guzzler tavern lies deep within the dungeon: the path runs through the Manufactory, after which a bridge leads to the two-tier tavern hall.
  • The chance to get the dagger from Plugger Spazzring is around 19% according to Wowhead, which is considered a high rate for transmog farming.
  • The content is designed for a group, but at max level the dungeon is cleared solo by any class without trouble.
  • There is no limit on attempts — Plugger Spazzring can be killed on every run into the dungeon.

There is an important nuance to the fight itself. As long as you simply trade with Plugger, he stays peaceful. The moment you attack him or steal his key, he stops serving guests and turns the entire hall of drunkards against you. If you are heading into the dungeon specifically for the dagger, the easiest approach is to kill the barkeeper right away: at max level even aggroing the whole tavern poses no threat, and the entire hall is cleared in a matter of seconds.

Who it suits visually

  • Looks for tavern thugs and dockside bandits — the broken bottle reads as an improvised weapon from a bar fight.
  • Pirate and smuggler leather armor sets that call for a "ragged," homemade weapon look instead of a parade blade.
  • It pairs with dark and dingy-brown armor shades — the bottle's glass looks especially striking against them.
  • It works well as a pair: two broken bottles in both hands reinforce the bully image better than one.
  • It fits as an ironic, deliberately tongue-in-cheek weapon choice for a character with an "everyday" themed look.

Tips

1

To wield a broken bottle in both hands, farm Barman Shanker twice — the item is not unique, and both copies unlock the appearance for transmog.

2

A drop chance of around 19% means the dagger drops on average every 5–6 runs; for two copies, budget roughly twice as many attempts.

3

The fastest farming method is to re-enter the dungeon each time and kill Plugger Spazzring immediately, without wasting time on the other bosses.

4

Any class with high movement speed works well: the path from the Blackrock Depths entrance to the Grim Guzzler tavern is fairly long.

5

If you attack the barkeeper, the whole hall of drunkards aggros — at max level this is not dangerous, but be ready for a small crowd of enemies.

6

The appearance unlocks in your appearance collection right after you obtain the item, even if your class cannot wield daggers in combat.

7

Plugger Spazzring and the other tavern dwellers also drop the rest of Blackrock Depths' rare loot — the farm can be combined with collecting other dungeon transmog.

Started playing back in Pandaria, when the pandaren were still a novelty. Got stuck on Monk because it's the only class where you don't get dizzy after a dash. Tries to manage both tanking and kicking enemies in the face.
